I have reviewed the changes to these documents. All of my concerns have
been addressed.
Thank you very much,
Joel M. Halpern

PS: I presume there is a plan for removing the remaining editors notes
in draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-v4opts?

I'm not in the list :-) but, anyway, here is my opinion:

* my comment about header format has been addressed and solved,

* my comment about caches and ILCC has been addressed. I would not say
"solved" since the issue is complicated. I think that the document
can be published as-is and the question about ILCC use and
implementation revised later, with practical experience.

I reviewed the latest versions of -eng, -icmpv6, -noncev6, and -dns.
All of my prior comments were addressed. I noticed a few minor issues
which I will report to the authors privately.

I will try to review the latest revs of -arch and -adv by the end of the
week.

My concerns have been addressed. This is a very complete set of documents, =
thanks for all of the time and effort that you've expended in getting this =
documented to this level.

Thanks,

Wes

Hi all,

We have now received approvals from all three folks who had outstanding =
comments:

	Wes George
	Steven Blake
	Joel Halpern

Thank you very much guys. Now, based on the consensus that concluded =
1/28/2012, we will proceed with the process for this document set.

The next step is to return to the IRSG for further review.

Hi all,

I have some thoughts that have bothered me for a longer time and I
would like to share my thoughts with this group. Since the ILNP
document are on their way to the review processes it might be an
appropriate time to put the thoughts on the table - another trigger is
the comment =93Perhaps it's time to build LISP to ILNP inter-working and
roll=94, http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf/current/msg72738.html
on the IETF discussion list. I believe it is doable.

But first things first:

Tony, many thanks for guiding me through the review processes! Without
your advices and patience I believe that my I-D never would have
reached RFC experimental status. Thank you, I really appreciate your
effort!

Here goes my brain dump:

Somewhere during the IRSG/IESG review process I stumbled on this paper:
ftp://ftp.cs.princeton.edu/techreports/2010/885.pdf
Read it with a conceptual view mindset; the technical details can be
build with tools from the RRG proposals (I discovered MPTCP on the
RRG, thus I consider it as part of the RRG =93family=94).

SCAFFOLD introduces a service identifier, that is, a session is
established from an endpoint to a service by a =93late binding=94=96 the
session is not directly established from an endpoint to another
endpoint, which we have proposed. Accessing endpoint-to-endpoint is so
retro at the moment; have a look on users=92 behavior when you are e.g.
traveling by public transportation =96 this behavior, i.e. accessing
social media services, blogs, communication services etc. are
architectural requirements today that didn=92t exist 15-20 years ago.
These requirements should be addressed somehow.

SCAFFOLD requires a transport protocol capable to move the session
from one resource to another resource in the data center =96 no need to
move the locator of the resource around in the data center, a service
identifier and a session identifier is used instead (no need for large
L2 nightmares in the DC). MPTCP is suitable for that. If other
transport protocols are used, ILNP can provide mobility services
between endpoints. MPTCP have restrictions due the size of the TCP
option, should MPTCP and ILNP co-operate so that e.g. nonce should
handle by ILNP when MPTCP move the session from one endpoint to
another?

In order to apply =93late binding=94 a hierarchical addressing (locator)
scheme is needed. That can be found in hIPv4 (RFC 6306) but it
describes only a scheme for IPv4; the very same can be designed for
IPv6. The trick here is to create a locator scheme that has n times
larger address space than the data plane. Two times larger address
space should be enough for planet Tellus. And then we expose these
two-level locators to the endpoints so that they have alternative
paths to transport their data. It is like the road system; the drivers
are provided a road map so they can chose the most suitable path and
avoid road blocks/congestion points. The current architecture is like
the railroad system =96 the transport protocol of the endpoints has no
alternatives, it just gets on-board the train and hopes that railroad
operator do a proper job. And another bonus by having hierarchical
locators is a more scalable routing system in the DFZ.

How to get there? A CES solution is needed (LISP, IRON, Ivip), it will
definitely speed up the transition. But there are some challenges with
cache management and creating a tight dependency between control and
data plane at the xTRs could create other issues. You might get around
these challenges if e.g. LISP (which is the =93root cause=94 behind hIPv4)
starts to integrate the other proposals discussed above. E.g. the
MPTCP WG is proposing a MPTCP proxy solution =96 is it possible to
integrate that with an ITR (and using hierarchical locator scheme with
a service identifier or a host identifier aka ILNP) to get around ETR
scaling issues at a content site by placing MPTCP proxies in front of
the servers? It is not a perfect solution; for sure there will be
scaling issues at the ITR, depending on how close it is located to the
initiators. But it is a very interesting transition mechanism.

I hope people can see the contours of a new architecture (for sure,
some will not prefer to see it all due to layer 10; religion). There
are unknown areas that needs to be explored but interesting use cases
can be found, that better addresses mobility and traffic engineering
between endpoints as well as accessing cloud based services than the
current architecture does.

The major building blocks can be found at RRG.

Happy Eastern!

Patrick

Hi Ran & Saleem,

We've started soliciting other IRSG members to review and comment on the =
current documents. Thomas Schmidt has been very kind to very quickly =
review the documents and has provided the following comments.

AFAIK, it's perfectly kosher to have IANA requests in IRTF experimental =
track RFCs.

Could you please respond to Thomas' other comments?

Thanks,
Tony

Agreed.

(Unless of course the registration policy would be "Standards Action", =
"IETF Consensus", etc. We can't allocate codepoints from registries that =
have those policies, nor can we create registries with those policies. =
NB: I don't know if this applies to the ILNP policies.)

                       CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:
        =20
APPLIED NETWORKING RESEARCH PRIZE (ANRP) 2012
              =20
                       http://irtf.org/anrp

*** Submit nominations for the 2012 award period of the ***
*** Applied Networking Research Prize until May 13, 2012! ***

The Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) is awarded for recent
results in applied networking research that are relevant for
transitioning into shipping Internet products and related
standardization efforts. Researchers with relevant, recently
published results are encouraged to apply for this prize, which will
offer them the opportunity to present and discuss their work with
the engineers, network operators, policy makers and scientists that
participate in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and its
research arm, the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF).

The goal of the Applied Networking Research Prize is to recognize
the best new ideas in networking, and bring them to the IETF and
IRTF especially in cases where they would not otherwise see much
exposure or discussion.

The Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) consists of:

  * cash prize of $500 (USD)
 =20
  * travel grant to attend a week-long IETF meeting
    (airfare, hotel, registration, stipend)
   =20
  * invited talk at the IRTF Open Meeting
 =20
  * recognition at the IETF plenary
 =20
  * invitation to related social activities
 =20
  * potential for additional travel grants to future IETF
    meetings, based on community feedback

HOW TO NOMINATE

Only a single person can be nominated for the award. The basis of
the nomination is a peer-reviewed, recently-published, original
journal, conference or workshop paper they authored. The nominee
must be one of the main authors of the nominated paper. Both self
nominations (nominating one=92s own paper) and third-party nominations
(nominating someone else=92s paper) are encouraged.

The nominated paper should provide a scientific foundation for
possible future IETF engineering work or IRTF research and
experimentation, analyze the behavior of Internet protocols in
operational deployments or realistic testbeds, make an important
contribution to the understanding of Internet scalability,
performance, reliability, security or capability, or otherwise be of
relevance to ongoing or future IETF or IRTF activities.

Applicants must briefly describe how the nominated paper relates to
these goals, and are encouraged to describe how a presentation of
these research results would foster their transition into new IETF
engineering or IRTF experimentation, or otherwise seed new
activities that will have an impact on the real-world Internet.

The goal of the Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) is to
foster the transitioning of research results into real-world
benefits for the Internet. Therefore, applicants must indicate that
they (or the nominee, in case of third-party nominations) are
available to attend at least one of the year=92s IETF meetings in
person and in its entirety.

Nominations must include:

  * the name and email address of the nominee

  * a bibliographic reference to the published nominated paper

  * a PDF copy of the nominated paper

  * a statement that describes how the nominated paper fulfills the
    goals of the award

  * a statement about which of the year=92s IETF meetings the nominee
would be available to attend in person and in its entirety

  * a brief biography or CV of the nominee

  * optionally, any other supporting information (link to nominee=92s
    web site, etc.)

Nominations are submitted via the submission site at
http://irtf.org/anrp/2012/. In exceptional cases, nominations may
also be submitted by email to anrp@irtf.org.

SELECTION PROCESS

A small selection committee comprised of individuals knowledgeable
about the IRTF, IETF and the broader networking research community
will evaluate the submissions against these selection criteria.

IMPORTANT DATES

Applications close: May 13, 2012 (hard)
Notifications: June 1, 2012

SPONSORS

The Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) is supported by the
Internet Society (ISOC), as part of its Internet Research Award

All,

The following drafts have been posted to the Internet-Drafts archive:

   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-adv-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-arch-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-arp-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-dns-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-eng-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-icmpv4-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-icmpv6-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-noncev6-02
   draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-v4opts-02

They contain minor clarifying edits based on the reviews
received since the -01 version. The 2 main topics were:

1) Clarify that ILNP multicasting is identical to IP multicasting.
2) The ICMP-related sub-section of "Security Considerations" for
draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-eng-02 was edited for clarity based on
   feedback from several reviewers.

Yours,

Ran

Hi, IESG secretary (BCC'ed),

this is a request for the IESG to perform an RFC5742 review of the =
following drafts describing ILNP from the RRG, to be published as RFCs =
on the IRTF Stream:

	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-adv-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-arch-02 (Experimental)=20
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-arp-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-dns-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-eng-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-icmpv4-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-icmpv6-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-noncev6-02 (Experimental)
	- draft-irtf-rrg-ilnp-v4opts-02 (Experimental)

These documents have been approved for publication by the IRSG. See =
http://wiki.tools.ietf.org/group/irtf/trac/ticket/42 for details on =
prior reviews. Please copy all correspondence to the document shepherd, =
Tony Li (tony.li@tony.li).

Also, please note that several of these documents require IESG Approval =
for codepoint registrations in various IANA registries. In the process =
of reviewing these documents under RFC5742 (i.e., for conflicts with =
IETF work), please also approve the necessary codepoints to enable =
experimentation with ILNP.

Thanks,
Lars
