Greetings to the list,

We have updated our draft for the SDN layer terminology.
Comments and suggestions are more than welcome.

> Abstract:
> Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is a new approach for network
> programmability. Network programmability refers to the ability to
> control, change, and manage network behavior dynamically through
> software via open interfaces as opposed to relying on closed boxes
> and propietary defined interfaces. SDN introduces an abstraction
> for
> the data forwarding plane and by doing so separates it from the
> control plane. This separation allows faster innovation cycles at
> both planes as experience has already shown. However, there is
> increasing confusion as to what exactly SDN is, what is the layer
> structure in an SDN architecture and how do layers interface with
> each other. This document does not aim to standardize any layers =
or
> interfaces but rather aims to answer these questions and provide a
> concise reference document for SDNRG in particular and the SDN
> community in general.

Adrian,=20

Thanks for sharing this draft. This is a very good draft to summarize SDN f=
or carrier networks.=20

Two comments:
- 100% Agree with the draft on the emphasis of PDP (Policy Decision Point) =
and PEP (Policy enforcement Point) components of SDN.=20

The wireless' PCRF (Policy and Charging rules function) and PCEF (Policy Ch=
arging Enforcement Function) are good examples of SDN. However, PCRF and PC=
EF only control the access segments, not global network.=20
why does the draft emphasize that "SDN approach should be global, network-w=
ide"?
=20
- We all understand the challenges of "Full Automation". However, the SDN a=
nd Full automation are two separate angles to Carrier networks. I find the =
Section 4.1 "Implications of full automation" actually de-rails the focus =
of the draft on SDN.=20

My two cents.=20

Hello,=20

I am Santiago, a masters degree level student and new to SDN. I have chosen=
my thesis topic load balancing in SDN networks. My background studies re=
vealed that there are research on distributing load among servers. But, how=
this would work in mobile networks? because there we dont experiance such =
trafic patterns or server pools.=20

I would be very thankful to you, if you could help me with your opinions fo=
r identifying requirements of load balancing in controller/switch level (ma=
jor issues that sould be addressed by such a scheme).

I thank you in advance for your cooperation.=20

Regards,
Santi,

Just getting ahead a bit, can anyone volunteer to scribe?

And of course, if anyone has additional agenda items please let us know.

Thanks!

Salutations,

I have been selected as the Routing Directorate reviewer for this draft.
The Routing Directorate seeks to review all routing or routing-related drafts
as they pass through IETF last call and IESG review. The purpose of the review
is to provide assistance to the Routing ADs. For more information about the
Routing Directorate, please see
http://www.ietf.org/iesg/directorate/routing.html

Although these comments are primarily for the use of the Routing ADs, it would
be helpful if you could consider them along with any other IETF Last Call
comments that you receive, and strive to resolve them through discussion
or by updating the draft.

Document: draft-sin-sdnrg-sdn-approach-04
Reviewer: Jamal Hadi Salim
Review Date: 31 October 2013
IETF LC End Date: 2013-11-04
Intended Status: Informational

o Summary:
This document provides a perspective of a service provider on the SDN
landscape. The document builds context for a taxanomy on SDN, as seen from
a service provider's lens, to do gap analysis which leads to advise
with a dose of reality check.

o Comments:
I think this document is ready for publication. I have a couple of
minor comments.

o Major Issues:
No major issues found.

o Minor Issues:

1) It would probably make sense, based on the content and tone,
to title section 3 as "Reality Check" (instead of "A few considerations")

2) Please fix my last name in the acks from "Salim" to "Hadi Salim"

cheers,
jamal

Folks,

Just to let you know - at this meeting in Vancouver there will be demo
of Service aware networking (using ForCES) at Bits and Bites on
thursday. For people who cant make it for bits and bites, we'll have
a shorter preview at the meeting's tail end.

The theme will constitute of three ingredients - all demonstrating the
versatility
of using ForCES in all 3 aspects of network programmability:

a) Open Network Devices.
We will demonstrate a variety of open datapaths running ForCES:
These include:
- physical machines with Linux
- VMs using KVM
- Cumulus Networks Open Network Devices (Broadcom ASIC based)

b)Open Network Functions.
These include a variety of ForCES LFBs:
- a variety of datapath LFBs needed for creating a PGW datapath
- a management LFB that is used to describe VMs
- a set of general purpose LFBs (which are available on all network devices):
       *switching/bridging (L2 FDB, L2 bridge ports, L2 Vlan filtering)
*physical/virtual ports (wide range: physical, tunnels like
vxlan, to simple tuntap on Linux etc)
       *IP address LFB

c) Open Network Services.
These will be services and apps utilizing the network functions above.
At the moment on the list (it may grow) are:
      * illustration of PGW control setting of the various LFBs for a UE
      * illustration of booting and managing VM lifecyles for virtual FEs/CEs
      * A CLI app at the controller controlling and managing all aspects of the
different Network Devices as well as monitoring them.

I should point out that demonstrating a CLI is boring - wish we could dazzle you
with flashing lights on a GUI - but we had a very short period to put
all of this together;
the purpose of the CLI is to illustrates the power of ForCES being
agnostic to the underlying
infrastructure as long as one defines an XML, using the ForCES language,
for an arbitrary network function. Essentially we have a consistent API _defined
by the XML_ for the Control Abstraction Layer (CAL) etc.

Hope to see you there!

cheers,
jamal
