All,

(Not sure if this is useful or not, but I'll put it out and see what happen=
s.)

This proposes an evolved (or maybe devolved?) model for an SDN managed netw=
ork element using another lesson from web browsers, namely the DOM.

With regards to how one might use a network element with an SDN control int=
erface.
One issue is how to deal with things that happen quickly at the forwarding =
engines.
For example watching a large number of statistics and sifting out a few int=
eresting events.
(A similar use case might be useful for 50 ms configuration changes after=
 a protection switch.)
(Another use case is what happens when the connection to the controller is =
lost.)
It would be useful to have code running at the forwarding engine doing the =
sifting.
To do this, one would have to both specify a programming language and inter=
faces to the forwarding engine and controller.

A web browser already does quite a bit of this and might be a useful model.

My understanding of how a browser operates is as follows:
When you choose a page, the browser downloads the xml page to the DOM.
Certain things in the DOM get rendered on the screen.
If JavaScript was included in the page, then it can modify the DOM, ca=
using what is rendered to change.
The JS can reach back into the network to get other things it needs.
User events can be captured by the downloaded JS to make an interactive=
 page.

The DOM is basically the programming interface available to JS to make thin=
gs happen on the screen.
I propose a similar story, except that DOM should cause things to happen in=
 the forwarding engine.
(And also should be where results from the forwarding engine show up.)

In effect, this moves the SDN control interface from a protocol interface t=
o a programming interface.
Centralized control becomes user customized distributed control.
One could support the current SDN model with a default proxy JS program =
in the NE, but some combination of both seems likely.

Such a model might provide a greater level of functionality to the SDN cont=
rol interface
while at the same time requiring less new stuff. (Web programmers shoul=
d feel right at home.)

Comments?

SDNRG IETF 89 Call for Presentations
----------------------------------------------------------

The Software Defined Networking Research Group (SDNRG) will hold
its next meeting in conjunction with IETF 89, March 02 - 07,
2014, in London, England. The SDNRG Program Committee is now
seeking proposals for presentations for the IETF 89 agenda.

Presentations highlighting current research in Software Defined
Networking and its appplications are encouraged. Areas of
interest include (but are not limited to):

o Classification of SDN models, including definitions and taxonomies
o SDN model scalability and applicability
o Multi-layer programability and feedback control systems
 o System Complexity
o Network description languages, programming languages
abstractions, interfaces and compilers including methods and
mechanisms for (on-line) verification of correct operation of
   network/node function.
 o Security
 o Controller architectures
 o SDN applications programming languages,
o SDN based network management approaches
o SDN troubleshooting and debugging techniques

Please send proposals to sdn@irtf.org.

Thanks,

Dave & Nick

Please consider this email as a proposal for a presentation on "Source Rout=
ed Make-Before-Break for Global Optimization with SDN" in IETF 89 agenda. T=
he presentation would require approximately 20 minutes and in addition to i=
ts main material will contain a very brief recorded demo of our working pro=
totype.=20

The presentation will:

1- Discuss the impact of global optimization algorithms on traffic interrup=
tions and the need for efficient "Make-Before-Break" mechanisms.

2- Explain the difference between implementing "Make-Before-Break" with hop=
by hop state v.s. source/segment routed head end only state.

3- Provides a very brief recorded 8 node demo showing an implementation of =
"Make-Before-Break" with source/segment routed head end only state.

4- And finally, briefly discusses a new technology idea called Protocol Obl=
ivious Forwarding that allows very efficient new data paths, such as very l=
ow overhead source/segment routing to be implemented by an SDN controller v=
ia extended OpenFlow.

    Objective

This book project will present the concept of a Software Defined Mobile
Network (SDMN) which would change the network architecture of the
current LTE (3GPP) networks. SDN will also open up new opportunities for
traffic, resource and mobility management, as well as impose new
challenges on network security. It is also foreseen that the
investments in the network and operational costs would change.
Therefore, this book project will address these main affecting areas
such as traffic, resource and mobility management, virtualized traffics
transportation, network management, network security and techno economic
concepts. Moreover, the complete introduction to SDN and SDMN concepts
will be included in the introduction section of the book.

In a nutshell, this book project will provide an insight into the
feasibility and opportunities of SDMN concept, as well as evaluate the
limits of performance and scalability of the new technologies applied on
mobile broadband networks.

Hi,

I hope this 'advert' is deemed appropriate for the SDNRG list.

There is a workshop being organised in Brussels on 30th Jan by the =
CityFlow and OFERTIE projects, with the EC supporting the event and =
providing a meeting room in one of its buildings. The workshop is =
targeted at researchers, and attendance is thus open to all, and free.

Details of the aims of the meeting and the agenda can be found here:
=
https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/software-defined-networking-sdn-concertatio=
n-workshop-tickets-10114511777

If anyone from this list would like to attend, please register (required =
for EC building entry). There may be some scope to include lighting =
talks from late registrations - if interested please let me know.

There will be presentations from various EU projects, as well as talks =
on testbeds (including future GEANT testbeds), and time reserved for =
discussing specific issues including SDN architectures.

The event is the day before the H2020 information day on FIRE-related =
projects, also in Brussels.

Tim=
