---------------------------------
IMPORTANT DATES
---------------------------------
- Special sessions paper submission: June 16th, 2014
- Notification: August 1st, 2014
- Final Paper: August 15th, 2014
In line with the IEEE CloudNet 2014 technical program and scientific object=
ives the special session on Mobile Cloud Networking and Services aims to di=
scuss the recent trends in mobile communications and cloud computing and wi=
ll in particular focus on challenges to be solved when integrating these te=
chnologies as well as possible synergies of these technologies.
Access to cloud storage and computing service via wireless/mobile networks =
should be optimized in terms of delay, bandwidth and energy consumption fro=
m an end user perspective. Moreover, there is an increasing trend to implem=
ent more and more functions of a mobile communications network in software,=
e.g., for signal and protocol processing. This trend is reflected in activ=
ities on Network Function Virtualization (NFV), which enables to use cloud =
computing infrastructures as processing platform for signal and protocol pr=
ocessing, namely for current and future generation mobile communications ne=
tworks. In particular, the integration of protocol and application/service =
processing allows several opportunities to optimize performance of cloud ap=
plications and services observed by the mobile user, whose device is connec=
ted to the cloud via wireless access networks.
The special session will address the integration of two technologies that a=
re expected to have significant impact in the ICT area for the next decade(=
s): next generation mobile communication networks (mainly 5G) and cloud com=
puting. While mobile communications networks have been established decades =
ago and are still continuously evolving, cloud computing became a hot topic=
in recent years and is expected to have a significant impact on novel appl=
ications as well as on ICT infrastructures. Cloud computing and mobile comm=
unication networks have been considered separate from each other in the pas=
t, but there are various possible synergies between them, converging into c=
loud networking.
First, access to cloud storage and computing services via wireless/mobile n=
etworks should be optimized in terms of delay, bandwidth and energy consump=
tion from an end user perspective.
Second, there is an increasing trend to implement more and more functions o=
f a mobile communications network in software, e.g., for signal and protoco=
l processing. This enables the use of cloud computing infrastructures as pr=
ocessing platforms for signal and protocol processing, namely for current (=
4G) and future (5G) generation networks. In particular, the integration of =
protocol and application/service processing enables several opportunities t=
o optimize the performance of cloud applications and services observed by t=
he mobile user, whose device is connected to the cloud via wireless access =
networks. This trend is also in line with the recently emerging ETSI activi=
ties in Network Functions Virtualization.
The special session solicits original contributions in the topics of intere=
st for the workshop. Those topics include but are not limited to the follow=
ing:

*First Workshop on Software-Defined Internets of the Future - WSDIF 2014*

Co-located with the 11th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad hoc and
Sensor Systems (MASS) 2014 - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - October 28 - 30,
2014.

Call For Papers

Some of the challenges future internets will face, i.e., scale and
complexity, are a direct result of the enormous success of their
predecessor, the Internet. Most of the =E2=80=9Caction=E2=80=9D fueling the=
se challenges
has been taking place at the network =E2=80=9Cedges=E2=80=9D driven by an e=
ver increasing
use of =E2=80=9Csmart=E2=80=9D mobile devices (e.g., smart phones, tablets,=
 etc.) and
ubiquitous access to the communication infrastructure (especially through
wireless communication). Another major driving force behind this
=E2=80=9Cevolutionary step=E2=80=9D towards future internets is the develop=
ment and
deployment of increasingly sophisticated network applications ranging from
cloud-based services, =E2=80=9Csmart=E2=80=9D spaces (e.g., smart home, sma=
rt buildings,
smart neighborhoods and grids, etc), health care delivery, law enforcement
and emergency services, as well as the so-called Internet of Things - IoTs.

The growing need to facilitate networks, in particular, the Internet, to
evolve, motivated the emergence of the Software-Defined Networking (SDN)
paradigm. The SDN paradigm has been proposed as a way to facilitate and
foster Internet evolution by enabling innovation through network
programmability. SDN=E2=80=99s premise is to decouple the network control- =
and
data-planes and thus make deploying new network services and protocols
viable. However, SDN techniques to-date have mostly targeted =E2=80=9Cmanag=
ed
networks=E2=80=9D. As such, they do not address the scale, heterogeneity an=
d
administrative decentralization of future networked environments, in
particular when considering internets consisting of infrastructure=E2=80=93=
less
based, self=E2=80=93organizing, and wireless heterogeneous networks.

This timely workshop aims to present and discuss recent developments in,
and challenges raised by, programmable internets of the future. We thus
invite researchers and practitioners to submit original work in the
following topics. The workshop=E2=80=99s goal is to provide a forum for res=
earchers
and practitioners to introduce and discuss new ideas to address issues such
as control scalability and performance in distributed environments; present
proposals and deployment experiences of new management software for
distributed control (logically centralized, physically distributed);
describe new architectural concepts and protocols for SDN-based
inter-domain communication; offer new insights on SDN applications to smart
environments and Internet of Things.

*Scope*

The WSDIF 2014 invites submissions of manuscripts that represent
significant, novel and unpublished research contributions.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

   - SDN architectures.
   - Distribution of control in SDN.
   - Security of SDN infrastructure and applications.
   - SDN in challenged and heterogeneous networks.
   - SDN in =E2=80=9Cuser centric networks=E2=80=9D - UCNs.
   - SDN-based location and mobility services.
   - Practical experiences in deployment of SDN-based technology and
   applications in a distributed fashion.
   - Programmable networking approaches to address challenges in: mobile,
mesh, cellular, sensor and ad-hoc networks.
   - QoS in SDN-based solutions.
   - Protocols and algorithms for inter- and intra-domain control
   communication.
   - Evaluation tools, simulation tools, and testbeds.

*Submissions*

All submissions should be written in English and are restricted to 6 pages
(IEEE Computer Society Proceedings Manuscripts style: single-spaced,
double-column pages using 10pt size fonts on 8.5 x 11 inch pages, with
side-margin at least 1 inch, including all figures, tables, and
references). Authors can get up to 2 additional pages at US$150 per page.

The workshop=E2=80=99s goal is to provide a forum for res=
earchers
and practitioners to introduce and discuss new ideas to address issues such
as control scalability and performance in distributed environments; present
proposals and deployment experiences of new management software for
distributed control (logically centralized, physically distributed);
describe new architectural concepts and protocols for SDN-based
inter-domain communication; offer new insights on SDN applications to smart
environments and Internet of Things.

INTRODUCTION

The Global Information Infrastructure and Networking Symposium (GIIS)

consists of an interrelated set of technical, policy, and social issues

implicit in the development of national and international (global)

information infrastructures and networks. GIIS aims at identifying and

promoting the exchange of knowledge on these interrelated issues and

provides liaison to bodies in the global society, technical fora and

international standards. GIIS 2014 follows the success of the precedent

editions and intends to promote interdisciplinary conference sessions to

discuss, build and further the use of national and international

information infrastructures and networks. The conference also aims at

providing a forum for the participants to broaden professional contacts

and for technical discussions and interactions on specific information

infrastructure and networking topics. Information Infrastructure and

Networking (IIN) brings together information processing applications,

communications networks and services, physical and software elements in

networks, and end systems. The program of GIIS 2014 will include invited

talks and keynotes, paper presentations, tutorials, panel, and discussion

sessions.

IMPORTANT DATES
---------------------------------
- Special sessions paper submission: Extended: July 3rd, 2014

Those topics include but are not limited to the follow=
ing:
. Protocols and wireless network technologies for mobile cloud applications
. Network functions virtualization for mobile cloud networks
. Standardization activities in the area of Software Defined Networking (SD=
N) and virtualization, such as Network Function Virtualization (NFV)
. Energy-saving at mobile end systems in network elements supporting mobile=
 cloud applications
. Distributed mobility management, including mobility prediction
. Future Internet architectures and protocols for mobile cloud computing, i=
ncluding content-centric / context-based networking
. Network and protocol support for delay-tolerant applications
. Cloud computing in opportunistic networks
. Management and allocation of mobile cloud resources, including SLA manage=
ment
. Cloud service management and migration
. Seamless handover support for mobile cloud applications
. Resource and service monitoring in mobile cloud networks
. Physical radio resource sharing
. End-to-end performance of mobile cloud applications
. Novel cloud-based implementation architectures for mobile communication n=
etworks
. Quality-of-Experience in mobile cloud applications
. Cloud-based applications and services for mobile users, including social =
networks
. (Participatory) sensing and mobile cloud applications, including data agg=
regation
. Security and privacy issues of mobile cloud computing, including authenti=
cation and authorization
. Accounting and charging of mobile cloud services
. Test-beds and performance evaluation for mobile cloud networking and appl=
ications

Authors of papers included in should submit a manuscript on or before the d=
eadline. Manuscripts should conform to the formatting and electronic submis=
sion guidelines of regular IEEE CloudNet 2014 papers. The papers will under=
go a review process as regular papers by at least 3 independent reviewers.

I believe subscribers of the SDNRG may be interested in the SDN survey we
have been working on and we intend to keep evolving over time.

While we have mainly focused on the "canonical" OpenFlow split control
approach to SDN, we have tried to capture the existence of alternative SDN
definitions and related work going on at IETF/IRTF --a discussion that
certainly could be improved and for which we very much welcome feedback and
contributions.

Thanks,
Christian

PD: Apologies for any duplicates

Subject: SDN literature survey with 400+ references (call for community
feedback/contributions)
To: openflow-discuss <openflow-discuss@lists.stanford.edu>

Dear fellows,

we have been working on a comprehensive survey on SDN which currently
features 400+ papers:
http://arxiv.org/abs/1406.0440

We are certain that our survey could include inaccuracies, and giving
the pace and vast amount of ongoing work, the work is certainly
incomplete and already outdated.

In addition to targeting a journal publication, we would like to keep
the arxiv version updated and evolving over time as a "living
document" that grows in size and quality based not only on our own
findings but also on feedback and contributions from the community in
an open source like approach.

Hence, we are hosting the source files of the survey in the following
github repository:
https://github.com/SDN-Survey/latex/wiki

and welcome feedback and direct editorial contributions via github
Issues and Pull Request mechanisms.

We would be thankful if you share our SDN survey (along the call for
community involvement) among your peers.

Thanks and best regards,

Christian (on behalf of all co-authors)
