I noticed that the Framework now has a better description of what
problem we want to solve.
It includes a short section on monitoring service functions. Unless I
misread that, the description could be enhanced by noting that another
measurement method would be to monitor traffic on both sides of the SF
(at the relevant SFF, and perform suitable correlation.

Yours,
Joel

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts
directories.

Title : MPLS Encapsulation for SFC NSH
        Authors : Andrew G. Malis
                          Stewart Bryant
                          Joel M. Halpern

        Filename : draft-malis-mpls-sfc-encapsulation-02.txt
        Pages : 7
        Date : 2018-09-12

Abstract:
This document describes how to use a Service Function Forwarder (SFF)
Label (similar to a pseudowire label or VPN label) to indicate the
presence of a Service Function Chaining (SFC) Network Service Header
(NSH) between an MPLS label stack and the packet payload. This
allows SFC packets using the NSH to be forwarded between SFFs over an
MPLS network, and the selection between multiple SFFs in the
   destination MPLS node.

Dear SFC chairs,

We meanwhile have received several reviews and opinions in favor of adoptio=
n of the draft having been in this state for 7 months.
What will be your decision?
Shall we post the revised version before officially ending this call or can=
we expect any other advice from your side?

Thanks!
Best Regards
Dirk=20

Dear Christian and Danny,

thanks a lot for your very detailed review and for suggesting editorial cor=
rections and detecting some typos in the draft.
Very much appreciated!
We will revise the draft and submit the new version as WG draft once the ad=
option call is ended by the chairs.

Best Regards
Dirk

Subject: Comments on draft-sarikaya-sfc-hostid-serviceheader-07

Dear authors,

Danny Lachos (cc:) and I have reviewed
draft-sarikaya-sfc-hostid-serviceheader-07 which proposes a valuable method=
to add user/service/slice information into the SFC meeting the needs of di=
verse use cases.

The initial Conventions and Terminology section assumes the reader is famil=
iar with RFC7665, as usual. Nevertheless, to strengthen the description of =
the motivating use cases, I would consider recapping some key terms (e.g., =
SFF, SFC-aware SFs, SFC Proxy, SFC
Encapsulation) and have them appear in the use case description, which curr=
ently focuses on the problem but could provide a further technical glimpse =
on potential solutions unlocked through the proposed Identifiers {Subscribe=
r, Slice and Service}. It would help to read in each use case a concrete ex=
ample of a specific network element performing SFC Encapsulation and includ=
ing one of the proposed Identifiers later used by other specific elements i=
n the SFC.

In the context of the NECOS project [1], we have identified some network sl=
icing scenarios [2] that I believe could be nicely realized with SFC featur=
ing the proposed Slice Identifiers, offering a candidate realization strate=
gy for some slicing modes of operation to which we do not have an actual te=
chnical solution yet. Maybe we can propose a specific scenario description =
for another sample use case 3.X. to be included in a future revision of the=
draft. I am copying some project colleagues who may also be interested in =
the SFC Slice Identifiers.

In addition to the suggestions above, in the attached file you can find fur=
ther comments marked with [DANNY].

Thanks,
Christian and Danny

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Service Function Chaining WG of the IETF.

Title : Service Function Chaining: Subscriber and
Service Identification Use Cases and Variable-Length NSH Context Headers
        Authors : Behcet Sarikaya
                          Mohamed Boucadair
                          Dirk von Hugo
Filename : draft-sarikaya-sfc-hostid-serviceheader-07.txt
Pages : 15
Date : 2018-06-21

Abstract:
This document discusses how to inform Service Functions about
service- and subscriber-related information for the sake of policy
enforcement and appropriate SFC-inferred forwarding. Once the
information is consumed by SFC-aware elements of an SFC-enabled
domain, it is stripped from packets when they leave the SFC-enabled
domain. Thus privacy-sensitive information is not leaked outside the
   domain.

Hierarchical Service Function Chaining (hSFC) is a network
architecture allowing an organization to decompose a large-scale
network into multiple domains of administration.

The goals of hSFC are to make a large-scale network easier to design,
simpler to control, and supportive of independent functional groups
within large network operators.

This document is a product of the Service Function Chaining Working Group of the IETF.

Hi Joel, all,

I'm afraid that including "Service Function Availability" into the scope of=
this document is a little bit challenging. Assessing that a given SF is re=
sponsive (from a connectivity standpoint) and is providing the service it i=
s expected to provide is an interesting problem to address but it is IMHO b=
eyond the chaining matters.=20

I would declare those aspects as out if scope.=20

Cheers,
Med

Dear All,
I've read the new WG document and got two questions I'd much appreciate
your consideration and opinions:

   - is it WG's intention to standardize both encapsulations, i.e., as TLV
   and as a message that immediately follows the NSH;
   - in the case of placement of iOAM information after the NSH but ahead
of the customer data, what happens if an SFF does not support iOAM at all
or the particular mode? I believe that the most likely, the packet will be
dropped by the SFF, i.e., the original data packet will be dropped because
some upstream SFF inserted iOAM data in it. Is that acceptable behavior? Of
course, to avoid loss of data resulted from the some SFF non-support of
iOAM the WG can add the requirement that to use iOAM all elements of the
   SFP MUST support iOAM.

Appreciate your comments, thoughts.

Regards,
Greg

This email initiates a 2 week Working Group last call for publication of
"Network Service Header (NSH) MD Type 1: Context Header Allocation (Data
Center)" as an Informational RFC.

Please speak up. While the working group has procedural agreement on
this approach, it will not happen unless there is support from the
working group. Also, if there is opposition we need to hear that, with
explanations as to why.

This last call will last through the 8th of October.

Tow related notes:
1) Sorry for the misleading notes from the datatracker. I clicked the
wrong button first.
2) If anyone would like to shepherd this, please let me know.

Thank you, please speak up,
Joel
(Jim is a co-author, on the document.)

Joel,

This draft has been through a bunch of rounds of revisions both as an
individual draft and now as a WG draft. I think it's ready for WG last call.

Cheers,
Andy

Dear All,
this draft demonstrates the applicability of the Alternate Marking
method (RFC 8321) in an SFC domain. A new section with the description
of the Compact Marking method explains how one bit-size mark can be
used to enable high accuracy measurement of delay and packet loss. And
thus we've updated the proposal to allocate the Mark field in SFC NSH
from two-bits to one-bit field.
Much appreciate your comments, questions.

Authors believe that the draft is ready for the WG adoption call and
