The IETF Admininstrative Director has requested that all wg chairs ask
members of their working groups "to complete a short survey that
focuses primarily, but not exclusively, on their meeting experience in
Dallas." The intent of making the request through the working group
lists is to try to get broader response from the IETF community.

His message added:

"I truly want the info to make the changes members of the community want"

Hi Geoff,

Current SIDR proposals focus on validation of BGP UPDATEs. I think the way
to prevent an AS from advertising error information is another important
aspect. Since manual configuration and misconfiguration is an important
reason of the problem, to solve the problem in the first place is necessary
to mitigate possible sufferings.
Therefore, I propose that relative task should be included in SIDR.

thanks

Zhao Ye

Hi,

I should note that the current SIDR work actually does not focus on BGP
updates - indeed the current focus is on information origination, as this
aspect of securing the inter-domain routing system is one where the RPSEC
WG requirement work does appear to have reached clear consensus.

So we have a charter and we are assembling material to consider relating to
the ability to validate the origination of routing information. The ability
to validate origination encompasses the ability to detect attempts to
originate incorrect information, including the outcomes of misconfiguration
you mention in your note.

The next step is to ask if yoiu have a specific proposal here that
addresses these requirements for validation of origination in routing, and
if so are you willing to submit this as an Internet draft so that the
working group can review it, or have you already submitted your ideas as a
draft?

regards,

     Geoff

OK, I did not select an appropriate term. What I said is about
origination authentication of a route.

After reading the SIDR charter and PRSEC BGP security requirement,
I did not make sure whether "the ability to detect attempts to originate
incorrect information" is a work group task before.
I think validation of an incoming route and prevention of originating an
invalid route are different function modules. Although both may be included
in a completed BGP security solution, the latter can be implemented solely.

I have not considered specific modification of BGP, but I think such
implement is low cost and
suits for routers with limited resource.

Yes, I am preparing a draft and will submit it in a few days.

Greetings,

We are two graduate students at the University of California at
Irvine. My partner and I are conducting a research project on Secure
BGP for our Advanced Networks course. In particular, we want to know
how willing organizations are to implement Secure BGP.

We have created a survey about Secure BGP. If you have time, we
invite you to take part in this survey. It is only 10 multiple
choice questions long, and it should take about 2 minutes. The survey
does not require a great deal knowledge about Secure BGP, so all are
welcome. The survey is completely anonymous, and your identity is not
recorded in any way (email, IP address).

The URL for the survey is: http://eee.uci.edu/survey/sbgp

We thank you for your time.

-Paul Main and Paul DiGioia

I would like to request that draft-huston-sidr-res-certs-00.txt be adopted
as a WG document.

It's scope is the SIDR charter item: "Submit initial draft on certificate
objects to be used within this architecture"

As I am one of the co-authors of this document I'd like to request our
other co-chair, Sandy, to look after the formalities of this action.

thanks,

Geoff, on behalf of Geoff, George and Rob

To be taken on as a working group work item, there must be rough
consensus in the working group that the document is taking the correct
approach and would be a good starting place for a WG product.

Please reply to the mailing list with approval or disapproval of
taking this draft on as a working group work item.

Note that support is also required, so lack of responses will be
taken negatively. So please do respond.

If you approve, it would also be useful if you would indicate your
willingness to review the document from time to time.

I approve of the working group adopting this draft.

This draft fits perfectly in the charter of this WG and addresses the
important bits. Making it a WG item would thus be a good thing.

Thus from my point I reply for approval as a WG item.

on the review stack.

I support adoption of draft-huston-sidr-res-certs-00.txt as a SIDR
work item. I will send comments to the list on suggested changes to
the text to make it more consistent with reference to RFC 3280 (the
relevant PKIX standard), perhaps late this week or early next week.

Steve
