(sipclf) to consider the following document:
- 'Format for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Common Log Format

  <draft-ietf-sipclf-format-09.txt> as Proposed Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the

sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the

Abstract

The SIPCLF Workgroup has defined a common log format framework for
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) servers. This common log format
mimics the successful event logging format found in well-known web
servers like Apache and web proxies like Squid. This document
proposes an indexed text encoding format for the SIP Common Log
Format (CLF) that retains the key advantages of a text-based format,
while significantly increasing processing performance over a purely
text-based implementation. This file format adheres to the SIP CLF
data model and provides an effective encoding scheme for all
mandatory and optional fields that appear in a SIP CLF record.

A previous version of this document was Last Called with an Informational
intended publication status. Issues with the document's scope and technical
concerns with internationalization were identified during IESG evaluation and
the document was returned to the working group.

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits

Abstract

Well-known web servers such as Apache and web proxies like Squid
support event logging using a common log format. The logs produced
using these de-facto standard formats are invaluable to system
administrators for trouble-shooting a server and tool writers to
craft tools that mine the log files and produce reports and trends.
Furthermore, these log files can also be used to train anomaly
detection systems and feed events into a security event management
system. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) does not have a common
log format, and as a result, each server supports a distinct log
format that makes it unnecessarily complex to produce tools to do
trend analysis and security detection. We propose a common log file
format for SIP servers that can be used uniformly by user agents,
proxies, registrars, redirect servers as well as back-to-back user
   agents.

Hi,

I believe that this is a good document and I support its approval.=20

I do have a number of issues which I suggest to take into consideration bef=
ore approval and publication:=20

1. In Section 4:=20

The SIP CLF is amenable to easy parsing and lends itself well to
   creating other innovative tools.

I am not sure what this sentence really says. What does 'easy parsing' mean=
? The previous paragraph referred to 'quick parsing (i.e., well-delimited f=
ields)' - quick parsing is a relative notion but at least there was an exam=
ple. Here, I do not know.

What does 'other innovative tools' means escapes me totally. Why 'other'? '=
other' than what? And what 'innovative tools' means?=20

2. In Section 11

SIP CLF log files will take up substantive amount of disk space
depending on traffic volume at a processing entity and the amount of
information being logged. As such, any organization using SIP CLF
should establish operational procedures for file rollovers as
appropriate to the needs of the organization.

Procedures for file rollovers is not enough - actually there need to be in =
place procedures for periodic retrieval of logs before rollover.=20

3. [RFC3261] needs to be a Normative Reference. All this document speaks ab=
out logs for SIP, refers to SIP entities, messages, fields in the SIP messa=
ges - on short it cannot be understood and the SIP-CLF cannot be implemente=
d without a good reading and understanding of [RFC3261].=20

Regards,

Dan

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the SIP Common Log Format Working Group of th=
e IETF.

Title : Format for the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Common =
Log Format (CLF)
	Author(s) : Gonzalo Salgueiro
                          Vijay Gurbani
                          Adam Roach
	Filename : draft-ietf-sipclf-format-11.txt
	Pages : 30
	Date : 2012-12-21

Abstract:
The SIPCLF Workgroup has defined a common log format framework for
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) servers. This common log format
mimics the successful event logging format found in well-known web
servers like Apache and web proxies like Squid. This document
proposes an indexed text encoding format for the SIP Common Log
Format (CLF) that retains the key advantages of a text-based format,
while significantly increasing processing performance over a purely
text-based implementation. This file format adheres to the SIP CLF
information model and provides an effective encoding scheme for all
mandatory and optional fields that appear in a SIP CLF record.

Dan: Thank you for your review of the SIP CLF problem statement
draft. I appreciate your time and resulting comments.

Please see inline on resolution of your comments. I will be releasing
an updated version of the draft shortly with the resolutions contained
herein.

I have changed the text to address your comment. The change is as
follows:

OLD:

The SIP CLF is amenable to easy parsing and lends itself well to
   creating other innovative tools.

NEW:

Due to the structure imposed by delimited fields, the SIP CLF is
amenable to easy parsing and lends itself well to creating other
innovative tools such as logfile parsers and trend analytic engines.

Added the phrase "periodic retrieval of logs before rollover" in S11.

> 3. [RFC3261] needs to be a Normative Reference. All this document speaks about logs for SIP, refers to SIP entities, messages, fields in the SIP messages - on short it cannot be understood and the SIP-CLF cannot be implemented without a good reading and understanding of [RFC3261].

I think it is a reasonable position that understanding rfc3261 is a pre-
requsite for implementing SIP CLF. I have made rfc3261 normative as you
suggest.

Once again, thank you for your time and review of this work.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=

This draft is a work item of the SIP Common Log Format Working Group of th=

	Pages : 37
	Date : 2012-12-24

Abstract:
This document describes a
framework, including requirements and analysis of existing
approaches, and specifies an information model for development of a
SIP common log file format that can be used uniformly by user agents,
proxies, registrars, redirect servers as well as back-to-back user
   agents.

All: I have posted a revision (-12) for the SIP CLF Problem Statement
draft that incorporates the IESG comments.

-12 can be accessed at
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-sipclf-problem-statement-12

The diff between -11 and -12 is at
http://tools.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-sipclf-problem-statement-12.txt

While most changes are editorial in nature, there are two changes that
I want to intimate the working group.

In S8.1, the following change was made based on an AD review:

OLD:
From - The From URI. For the sake of brevity, URI parameters
    SHOULD NOT be logged.
To - The To URI. For the sake of brevity, URI parameters SHOULD NOT
    be logged.

NEW:
From - The From URI. For the sake of brevity, URI parameters
    should not be logged.
To - The To URI. For the sake of brevity, URI parameters should not
    be logged.

For the purpose of the SIP CLF record, the To and From URIs and the
tags, as header parameters, are important. Whether or not to log other
URI parameters depends on the implementation; certainly terseness
dictates that an unadorned To or From URI is easy for visualization
as the CLF records scroll by.

Please let me know if there are any concerns with respect to this
change.

Thank you,

- vijay
