In RFC3261, the Accept-Language section defines the headers meaning with a =
language value present and its meaning when the header is not present.

20.3 Accept-Language

The Accept-Language header field is used in requests to indicate the
preferred languages for reason phrases, session descriptions, or
status responses carried as message bodies in the response. If no
Accept-Language header field is present, the server SHOULD assume all
languages are acceptable to the client.

The Accept-Language header field follows the syntax defined in
[H14.4]. The rules for ordering the languages based on the "q"
parameter apply to SIP as well.

   Example:

      Accept-Language: da, en-gb;q=3D0.8, en;q=3D0.7

The grammar for Accept-Language shows the language value as optional:

      Accept-Language =3D "Accept-Language" HCOLON
                              [ language *(COMMA language) ]

What does it mean if the header is present but with an empty language value=
?

          Accept-Language:

Regards,
Mike

I believe it means you have no preferred language, thereby granting
equal precedence to any language. In other words, the same as not
putting the header field in at all.

My rule of thumb: a header field with no value has no value.

Honoring the Accept-Language by actually sending reason phrases, etc.
in-language is not mandatory. As far as I know, most server packages
ignore it.

And by the way, the SIP working group is now closed. I don't know how
many folks are still monitoring this mailing list. All remaining work
has transitioned eitehr to other working groups, or to that
interminable no-mans land known as "AD sponsored".

So where will the creation of new SIP working groups be declared?
Seems like the SIP WG is still useful for announcements of that kind.

Or where does one go to see the list of all SIP-related working groups?

I believe it means you have no preferred language, thereby granting
equal precedence to any language. In other words, the same as not
putting the header field in at all.

My rule of thumb: a header field with no value has no value.

Honoring the Accept-Language by actually sending reason phrases, etc. =20
in-language is not mandatory. As far as I know, most server packages
ignore it.

And by the way, the SIP working group is now closed. I don't know how
many folks are still monitoring this mailing list. All remaining work
has transitioned eitehr to other working groups, or to that interminable
no-mans land known as "AD sponsored".

Attila: The SIP and SIPPING WGs have been replaced by
sipcore (http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/sipcore-charter.html)
and dispatch (http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/dispatch-charter.html).

The genesis for this change was discussed in
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-peterson-rai-rfc3427bis-01,
and you can hear the deliberations on this in the last IETF
meeting at
http://www.softarmor.com/mediawiki/index.php/SIP_Audio_for_IETF_74,
see item number 2 on that page (SIP change process (Jon Peterson)).

Aside from the viewpoint that this specific query possibly belongs on the s=
ip-implementors list.

Can I note that people should continue to monitor this list for any issues =
regarding SIP documents in transit within the IESG (i.e. post publication r=
equested).=20

You can only discard your participation when we get the IESG to finish chew=
ing the last one - at the current rate of progress that is about 3 years ti=
me.

Keith

All: Scott and I released new versions of domain-certs (-04)
and sip-eku (-05) following a conversation with the AD, who
is in the process of moving these forward.

The changes were minor and are summarized as follows:

1) In domain-certs-04, the sip-eku reference was downgraded from
  Normative to Informative.

2) In sip-eku-05, changed the description of how to examine
the EKU values to clarify that the decision to be made is
whether or not the certificate is restricted, as opposed to
deciding whether or not the certificate is valid in some broader
  sense.

The new versions are available at:
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-sip-domain-certs-04
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-sip-eku-05

Thanks,

- vijay

Title : UA-Driven Privacy Mechanism for SIP
	Author(s) : M. Munakata, et al.

This document defines a guideline for a User Agent (UA) to generate
an anonymous Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) message by utilizing
mechanisms such as Globally Routable User Agent URIs (GRUU) and
Traversal Using Relays around NAT (TURN) without the need for a
privacy service defined in RFC 3323.

Title : Domain Certificates in the Session Initiation Protocol (=
SIP)
	Author(s) : V. Gurbani, et al.
	Filename : draft-ietf-sip-domain-certs-04.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 2009-05-18

This document describes how to construct and interpret certain
information in a X.509 PKIX-compliant certificate for use in a
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) over Transport Layer Security (TLS)
connection. More specifically, this document describes how to encode
and extract the identity of a SIP domain in a certificate and how to
use that identity for SIP domain authentication. As such, this
document is relevant both to implementors of SIP and to issuers of
cetificates.

Title : Using Extended Key Usage (EKU) for Session Initiation Pr=
otocol (SIP) X.509 Certificates
	Author(s) : S. Lawrence, V. Gurbani

This memo documents an extended key usage (EKU) X.509 certificate
extension for restricting the applicability of a certificate to use
with a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) service. As such, in
addition to providing rules for SIP implementations, this memo also
provides guidance to issuers of certificates for use with SIP.

Cullen and Rohan,

I have been selected as the General Area Review Team (Gen-ART)=20
reviewer for this draft (for background on Gen-ART, please see=20
http://www.alvestrand.no/ietf/gen/art/gen-art-FAQ.html).

Please resolve these comments along with any other Last Call
comments you may receive.

Document: draft-ietf-sip-outbound-17
Reviewer: David L. Black
Review Date: May 20, 2009
IETF LC End Date: May 26, 2009

Summary:
This draft is basically ready for publication, but has nits
that should be fixed before publication.

Comments:
This is a well-written document about using SIP through a NAT,
including handling information that needs to flow inbound
through a NAT towards a User Agent and keep-alive techniques
for connections that may pass through a NAT.

This suspect we should move this to be informative. We mostly
reference 5389 but have one part were we want to say that there are no
backwards compatibly requirements with the 3489.

It seems most people are not sure about which version of TLS we should
be referencing on an extension to 3261. I'm going to ask the security
ADs for their advice here. (We have the same question on a bunch of
drafts)

I have submitted a revised version of the XCAP Event draft based on
feedback from Lisa Dusseault and that incorporates a vast amount of
editing by Jean Mahoney, a technical writer who volunteered to help
clean things up after Lisa pushed the draft back from IESG review.

See:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sip-xcapevent-05.txt

and since tehre are a lot of changes, the side-by-side diff is really
helpful:

http://tools.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-sip-xcapevent-05

There are a number of questions open in the existing document.

1) What's the default notification mode supposed to be? "xml-
patching" is listed as the default and fail-safe in some text, but "no-
patching" is also described as the singular "must implement" mode. It
seems to me that if a mode is the default if no mode is specified,
then that mode had better be the default.
This question is a primary source of confusion in Section 4.3, and I'd
appreciate some feedback. This whole section got a lot of edits, you
may want to usea difftool.

2) Aggregating definition

Our current text has this definition; is it right?

Aggregating: An XCAP client can update only a single XCAP Component
at a time using HTTP. However, a notifier may be able to
aggregate a series of these modifications into a single
notification using XML-Patch- Ops semantics encoded in the XCAP-
       Diff format.

3) SUBSCRIBE bodies

Section 4.4 currently says;

The SUBSCRIBE request MAY contain an Accept header field. If no
such
header field is present, it has a default value of "application/
xcap-diff+xml". If the header field is present, it MUST include
"application/xcap-diff+xml", and MAY include any other types.

This doesn't sound right to me.

4) Error recovery

Section 4.7 says:

While the "aggregate" mode uses bandwidth most efficiently, it
introduces other challenges. The initial synchronization might fail
with rapidly changing resources, because the "aggregate" mode
messages might not include the full version-history of a document
and
the base XCAP protocol does not support version-history retrievals
of
documents. When new documents are created in subscribed collections
and the notifier is aggregating patches, the same issue can occur.
In a corner case, the notifier may not be able to provide patches
with the XML-Patch-Ops [RFC5261] semantics. Therefore, if the
notifier has to temporarily disable diff generation and send only
the
URI references of some changed documents to the subscriber, it MUST
continue with the "xcap-patching" mode afterwards for these
resources, if the initial subscription also started with the "xcap-
patching" mode. Recovery from this error condition therefore means
that the subscriber must refresh to a "known good" state by
downloading the current document if it has lost track of the
patching
operations as indicated by mismatching ETags.,

(note the accidental extra comma here at the end, I just noticed it,
and it is my fault).

Anyhow, does the "recovery" text make sense?

for implementers this is no big deal, although you MUST know which is
the default if the parameter is missing, anyways it can be anyone of
those, so i'm fine with this technical change.

the part was stolen from rfc3856, section 6.5. If you refer to default
behavior, i personally agree that it's a bit weird, but there are much
better sip experts here...

I must admit that it's a bit difficult to follow the sentence starting
with "Recovery ..." but it shouldn't still be _wrong_...

Section 5 example has a missing angle bracket, and there's bug in
whitespace usage, take the example from the previous version.

Similar bugs also in example on page 21.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Dispatch Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Managing Client Initiated Connections in the Session Ini=
tiation Protocol (SIP)
	Author(s) : C. Jennings
	Filename : draft-ietf-sip-outbound-18.txt
	Pages : 49
	Date : 2009-05-26

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) allows proxy servers to initiate TCP =
connections or to send asynchronous UDP datagrams to User Agents in order t=
o deliver requests. However, in a large number of real deployments, many p=
ractical considerations, such as the existence of firewalls and Network Add=
ress Translators (NATs) or the use of TLS with server-provided certificates=
, prevent servers from connecting to User Agents in this way. This specifi=
cation defines behaviors for User Agents, registrars and proxy servers that=
allow requests to be delivered on existing connections established by the =
User Agent. It also defines keep alive behaviors needed to keep NAT bindin=
gs open and specifies the usage of multiple connections from the User Agent=
to its Registrar.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sip-outbound-18.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP at:
ftp://ftp.ietf.org/internet-drafts/

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader implementa=
tion to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the Internet-Draft.=

Yeah, this is what 3265 makes us do (define a default Accept header
field value for the event package).

Also, it looks like we lost a right-angle-bracket on the <element>
open tag in the xcap-diff document in section 5.

Lastly, I have been meaning to ask; in what cases (if any) would
sending a SUBSCRIBE 404 be appropriate in this event package? Do we
establish a subscription even if every uri in the SUBSCRIBE body
refers to an AUID we don't support? What about uris that are formatted
in an unsupported way (for example, using "users/bob" when what the
server really needs is "users/sip:bob@foo"), or that use a document
name that doesn't exist in the AUID being used (say, "rls-
services.xml" instead of "index" or "index.xml")? How about uris that
are outright malformed; it seems that our best choice is a SUBSCRIBE
400, but what if only one of the uris in the SUBSCRIBE body is in such
a state? Could we use <xcap-error> documents in some way (provided the
subscriber supports this format) to help indicate what went wrong in
these cases?

Best regards,
Byron Campen

I just diff'ed -18 against -17. Both of the RFC reference issues
noted in my Gen-ART review of -17 have been addressed in the -18
version. The quick turnaround is impressive.

Thanks,

I've revised xcapevent to fix the XML syntax errors to the best of my
ability, and to correct the grammar error pointed out by Pasi Eronen
during IESG review. There may be subtle XML issues about namespaces or
other stuff beyond my ken. More on that later.

Thew new grammar is:

         diff-processing = "diff-processing" EQUAL (
           "no-patching" /
           "xcap-patching" /
           "aggregate" /
           token )

Before, we lacked the parentheses, so the production was wrong due to
operation precedence.

A review note from Pasi says:

"The examples in Appendix A contain some invalid XML -- I didn't
actually run a validator, but e.g. "" is clearly
wrong, and in some cases (e.g. last example in A.4), handling of
namespaces doesn't look OK."

I've actually run a validator on every XML block in this draft, by
cutting and pasting from the text into the validator. This took about
an hour. I did find a couple of missing ">" characters, which I have
fixed. I THINK I got everything. Anybody have an automated tool for a
recheck?

As for the namespace handling:

I presume Pasi's referring to:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
            <xcap-diff xmlns="urn:ietf:params:xml:ns:xcap-diff"
                    xcap-root="http://xcap.example.com/">
                    <document previous-etag="7ahggs3"
                            sel="tests/users/sip:joe@example.com/index"
                            new-etag="63hjjsll"/>
                    </xcap-diff>

This looks like the same xmlns as every other example in the text, so
I could be missing something (like THAT would be a first!). Anybody
hhave a cluebat to hit me with here?

And in the process of writing this note up, I realized that a change I
made in section 4.7 at Jari's request somehow fell out of the edit
buffer. So I guess a -07 is on the way.

The error I thought I had made, dropping out a change in 4.7 didn't
happen; rather, the tools page lags behind posting, so I went to
double-check that the change had made it in, I got a -05 draft back
instead of a -06 (even though I typed -06, perhaps we have a bug).

Anyhow, the correct -06 draft is at:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sip-xcapevent-06.txt

and will presumably show up on tools eventually.

Here's a note on the change I made, based on Jari's input that the
revised paragraph didn't make sense even to him.

The -05 text:

Recovery from this error condition therefore means
that the subscriber must refresh to a "known good" state by
downloading the current document if it has lost track of the
patching
operations as indicated by mismatching ETags

became (note changes to last sentence, making it a couple of sentences).

In -06, it appears that I failed to convert the "<" and ">" in one
XML example into "<" and ">", meaning a large part of the
example XML document simply disappeared. There are some things about
using xml2rfc to document xml that really bug me . . .

So I fixed it. The draft, that is, not xml2rfc.

I took this opportunity to also run another spell check, and correct a
few typos I had introduced.

New version (-07) has been submitted for draft-ietf-sip-
xcapevent-07.txt.
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-sip-xcapevent-07.txt

Diff from previous version:

Barring an answer to Byron's 404 question, I think I'm done.

imo fwiw, 404 is a no go here, so if the client makes mistakes, it just
doesn't get anything within subscription. The rule is: use http and xcap
specific errors if you have doubts, but i'm almost 100% certain that
no-one is going to implement that kind of state-machine in their clients
(is there anyone doing even the simplest implementation? which is btw.
indeed really _challenging_ both on the server and the client). In
practice, it is mib to make a bullet-proof logic for the server side
error behavior, and given that clients could not _ever_ rely that the
servers really obey some given rules, it becomes way too complex and
error prone to the clients. This was sometimes on the table (looong ago)
but was given up for many reasons.

A Subscriber can find out which AUID the XCAP Server support by
retrieving the "xcap-cap" document document as defined in RFC4825
section 12 prior to the subscription in case an implemtation needs to
know this.=20

It is very difficult for an XCAP server to know that a valid document
selector will be in the future. It shall be possible to monitor when a
document is created and how will the Notifier know what in the future
will be a valid Document selector? Shall the Notifier use its present
configuration to find out what will be valid in the future or shall the
Notifier trust that the Subscriber knows something that the Notifier yet
does not know. My view is that it is better to trust the Subscribe and
assume that the document selector if not valid now will be valid in the
future. If a Notifier really have a need to fail the subscription to a
certain XCAP resource, my suggestion is to fail the whole subscription
in order to not to make things more complex than necessary. One issue if
it may exist a need to provide a body with detailed information to
support that the Subscriber can resubscribe with a body that the
Notifier will accept or if an empty 400 is enough. In most case the
Subscriber has got the Document Selector for an other type of client (
e.g. An XCAP client) and it is not provided by a human user. This means
that the it very likely that the Document Selector is not malformed in
the case . If the URI is only an AUID and that AUID is wrong it is
likely caused by a bug in the Subscriber client program and I find it
hard to see that a detailed error message will help to correct such a
fault ( Maybe an error message will help to find the bug). The case that
is left is when the XUI in an unsupported format and the XUI is inserted
by a human user wrongly. Again how will the Notifier know what formats
it may have to support in the future and that it is OK to fail the
subscription on existing knowledge. My view is that the normal behavior
for a Notifier is to keep the subscription and report back information
about existing resources and regard all other resources as resource that
may exist in the future and therefore not fail the subscription. This
means that the draft is good enough as it is as I see it and that
detailed error procedures for a case that is hard to detect is not
really needed. =20

If it exist a need to provide this detailed information I do not think
the <xcap-error> is a suitable choice as this document is handling
errors related to the XML body in an XCAP PUT and not errors related to
the Document selector.

Oh yeah, absolutely. I am coming at this from the server's
perspective though; why should I be forced to maintain a subscription
to stuff that I don't even support, and never will support for the
lifetime of the subscription? I guess what I am arguing is that this
may be a good thing to leave up to policy.

When I was talking about malformed URIs, I was mainly thinking about
malformed XPATH, which will remain malformed. But, if a document
selector is malformed now, and the server does not expose
configuration that will make it well-formed in the lifetime of the
subscription (across a recompile/upgrade/reboot/etc), would it then
make sense to reject as a matter of local policy? In principle the
implementor will know what can be reconfigured to work on-the-fly, and
what can't (whether this is true in practice, who knows, but I think
that's safely in the realm of "implementor's problem"). I agree that
_requiring_ servers to reject when they don't _currently_ understand a
doc-selector or a collection selector is a bad idea (which is the
point you're trying to make here, I think). They should be _allowed_
to do so when it makes sense for the particular implementation, however.

Yeah, you're right (I was erroneously remembering that you could use
<xcap-error> in some cases for GETs).
