Disclaimer: I'm not involved in the SIP community and not very
familiar with its implementation or history.

Whenever I use an IP phone, I run into a nned to register the same
extension on multiple devices, and I always get the recommendation to
create more extensions and use hackery on the PBX to make 'em work
like they're a single one. That's not good enough. The other protocols
we use to communicate (XMPP, POP/IMAP/SMTP, even proprietary ones like
AIM and old ones like POTS) are all friendly to multiple connections
to the same account. Why's this functionality missing from SIP? There
are only a few use cases, but they're huge ones:

- A user has a desk phone but also wants to take and place calls
occasionally from a computer or mobile device over cellular data.
Usually, the desk phone will be the only device registered.
- A user wants an extension represented in two or more geographically
separate locations, say on a desk phone at home and a desk phone at work
- A house with extensions in several rooms. Right now, the "IP" part
of IP telephony usually evaporates inside the home, where SIP gets
bridged to POTS. That's great for retrofits, but as fewer people
subscribe to landline service, there will come a time when new homes
aren't wired for POTS. At the same time, many new homes ARE being
wired with Ethernet.

What do you all think about this problem? (If it's already been
discussed to death, feel free to lightly whack me over the head and
point me to the right thread :).)

In SIP, one can register multiple devices to the same extension.

Then the call gets forwarded to each device simultaneously using SIP =
"forking".

from RFC 3261
 A proxy server can
also send an INVITE to a number of locations at the same time. This
type of parallel search is known as forking.

It's well-understood, well-known and has been around for several years.

(SIP forking is not possible on stateless proxies though)

Attila

Multiple registrations is a functionality that was built into SIP from
the beginning. Many, many users of sipXecs have been using it for many
years and we have never seen a fundamental problem with it. It is not
clear to me who would recommend to you that multiple registration does
not work in SIP. Is it possible that you are confusing SIP with other
voice-over-IP protocols, some of which do not support multiple
registrations well?

If you have tried to use multiple registrations and they have not
worked, please tell us about your experiences in detail. I'm sure the
problem can be corrected.

Sorry about that message, I mistook which mailing list I received it
via. However, the above description is valid regarding SIP.

If you have trouble with the sipXecs system, please write to the
sipx-users mailing list (@list.sipfoundry.org). If you have trouble
with other SIP systems, you can write to sip-implementors
(@lists.cs.columbia.edu).

Then you should find other phones and/or other PBXs. Multiple
registrations should just work with no hackery required.

This is a multipart message in MIME format.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

I have found discussion thread on how to secure e.g. TEL URI over SIP from
2007.
transport=tls is deprecated and it does not mean end to end anyway.
We still do not have "tels" URI.

Was this discussion concluded and if how it was concluded?

why not use a sips uri that contains a telephone number instead (in the
sense of section 19.1.6, RFC 3261) ? Eg: sips:+355-554-1234567;postd=
pp22@foo.com;user=phone

AFAIK there was never any resolution of this - nobody knows how to do it.

I think the most fundamental problem is that there is no good answer to
who is permitted and able to authenticate the use of a particular TEL URI.

All: Based on IESG review of sip-eku-05, Scott and I have released
a new version to identify their comments.

The IESG felt that sip-eku should be experimental, so we have
changed the designation accordingly. In addition, we have
removed id-kp-{client,server}Auth values since it was felt that
they were an odd fit. A few typos and text clarifications round
up the set of changes we did.

A diff version between -05 (which was reviewed by the IESG) and
-07 is at:

http://tools.ietf.org//rfcdiff?url1=http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-sip-eku-05.txt&url2=http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-ietf-sip-eku-07.txt

Thank you,

That's a very interesting issue. The Tel: uri gets routed somehow, by
default route in a proxy or outbound proxy setting in a UA.
This really applies to all NON-sip/sips uri's in SIP.

Food for thought. And something that causes damage for the use of Tel:
URI's.

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) allows proxy servers to
initiate TCP connections or to send asynchronous UDP datagrams to
User Agents in order to deliver requests. However, in a large number
of real deployments, many practical considerations, such as the
existence of firewalls and Network Address Translators (NATs) or the
use of TLS with server-provided certificates, prevent servers from
connecting to User Agents in this way. This specification defines
behaviors for User Agents, registrars, and proxy servers that allow
requests to be delivered on existing connections established by the
User Agent. It also defines keep-alive behaviors needed to keep NAT
bindings open and specifies the usage of multiple connections from
the User Agent to its registrar. [STANDARDS TRACK]

This document is a product of the Session Initiation Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard Protocol.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet standards track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Internet
Official Protocol Standards (STD 1) for the standardization state and
status of this protocol. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.

Several applications of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) require
a user agent (UA) to construct and distribute a URI that can be used
by anyone on the Internet to route a call to that specific UA
instance. A URI that routes to a specific UA instance is called a
Globally Routable UA URI (GRUU). This document describes an
extension to SIP for obtaining a GRUU from a registrar and for
communicating a GRUU to a peer within a dialog. [STANDARDS TRACK]

        Updates/Obsoletes/SeeAlso: None

        I-D Tag: draft-ietf-sip-record-route-fix-10.txt

        URL: http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5658.txt

A typical function of a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Proxy is to
insert a Record-Route header into initial, dialog-creating requests in
order to make subsequent, in-dialog requests pass through it. This
header contains a SIP Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) or SIPS
(secure SIP) URI indicating where and how the
subsequent requests should be sent to reach the proxy. These SIP or SIPS
URIs can contain IPv4 or IPv6 addresses and URI parameters that could
influence the routing such as the transport parameter (for example,
transport=tcp), or a compression indication like "comp=sigcomp". When
a proxy has to change some of those parameters between its incoming
and outgoing interfaces (multi-homed proxies, transport protocol
switching, or IPv4 to IPv6 scenarios, etc.), the question arises on
what should be put in Record-Route header(s). It is not possible to
make one header have the characteristics of both interfaces at the
same time. This document aims to clarify these scenarios and fix bugs
already identified on this topic; it formally recommends the use of
the double Record-Route technique as an alternative to the current RFC
3261 text, which describes only a Record-Route rewriting solution.
