A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Selection of Language for Internet Media of the IETF.

Title : Multiple Language Content Type
        Authors : Nik Tomkinson
                          Nathaniel Borenstein

	Pages : 19
	Date : 2016-10-12

Abstract:
This document defines an addition to the Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (MIME) standard to make it possible to send one message

Hi All,

as you will have seen there is a new I-D version for the non-real-time
document. This includes 2 updates:

Changing the Translation-Type parameter of the Content-Language field to be
a field in its own right. This is to reduce the risk to existing
implementations that deal with Content-Language because RFC 3282 for
Content-Language does not define the field as having parameters at all, so
adding a parameter may break existing code.

The inclusion of the IANA registration templates for the
multipart/multilingual type and the new Translation-Type field.

Please take a look and comment if you think there is anything left to do.

Nik.

Hi All,

as you will have seen there is a new I-D version for the non-real-time docu=
ment. This includes 2 updates:

Changing the Translation-Type parameter of the Content-Language field to be=
a field in its own right. This is to reduce the risk to existing implement=
ations that deal with Content-Language because RFC 3282 for Content-Languag=
e does not define the field as having parameters at all, so adding a parame=
ter may break existing code.

The inclusion of the IANA registration templates for the multipart/multilin=
gual type and the new Translation-Type field.

Please take a look and comment if you think there is anything left to do.

        Date : 2016-10-12

Abstract:
This document defines an addition to the Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (MIME) standard to make it possible to send one message

The translations would be identified by a language tag and selected
by the email client based on a user's language settings.

Thanks Doug.

The only things I have concerns about are:
 - In the Introduction, I reference the real-time I-D but should it really
refer to the RFC number of the real-time document? If so, this means that
the non-real-time document cannot be published until the real-time document
has an RFC number assigned which ties the two together in terms of
readiness to publish. I believe that Randall has done the same from his
document.
 - I use the future tense in the IANA Considerations section (eg. The
multipart/multilingual MIME type *will* be registered). Is this OK?

Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on these two?

Nik.

#5: Improve paragraph on relay services in section 1. Introduction.

Comment (by nrooney@gsma.com):

Thanks for the input here Gunnar. Randall - can you make the change to the
simpler paragraph given here, for clarity it's below:

"Regarding relay services, in the case of an emergency call requiring
sign language, there are a number of approaches that can be enhanced by
having the language and modality preferences specified by the caller and
conveyed to the relay service or the service provider or the emergency
service network and PSAP. The need for language and modality indication
becomes extra apparent when dealing with emergency calls by visitors to
regions with other default languages than the caller's."

Comment (by nrooney@gsma.com):

 Hi all.

There doesn't seem to be consensus for this change - if there is an
objection to this please respond on the list.

Ticket #19 relates to the template included in Section 11.1 of
https://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/slim/trac/ticket/19

Nik - Does the latest update (
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-slim-multilangcontent-06) resolve
this issue?

Text of Issue 19

am working on this template but I need some advice from anyone who knows
this sort of this thing well and has experience in this area.

My initial suggestion would be:

Media Type name: multipart

Media subtype name: multilingual

Required parameters: boundary (defined in RFC2046
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2046>)

Optional parameters: N/A

Encoding considerations: ?

Security considerations: See the Security Considerations section in this
document

Interoperability considerations:

Existing systems that do not treat unknown multipart subtypes
as multipart/mixed may not correctly render a
multipart/multilingual type.

Published specification: This document

Applications that use this media type:

Mail Transfer Agents, Mail User Agents, spam detection,
virus detection modules and message authentication modules.

Additional information:

Deprecated alias names for this type: N/A
Magic number(s): N/A
File extension(s): N/A
Macintosh file type code(s): N/A

Person & email address to contact for further information:

Nik Tomkinson
=E2=80=8Brfc.nik.tomkinson@gmail.com

Nathaniel Borenstein
=E2=80=8Bnsb@mimecast.com

Intended usage: Common

But I am not sure about the encoding considerations because the IANA
'Application for a Media Type' form at
=E2=80=8Bhttp://www.iana.org/form/media-types includes
these options:

   - 7-bit text
   - 8-bit text (this media type may require encoding on transports not
   capable of handling 8-bit text)
   - binary (this media type may require encoding on transports not capable
   of handling binary)

but it also refers to RFC 6838 <http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6838> =C2=A74=
.8
which lists:

   - 7bit: The content of the media type consists solely of CRLF-delimited
   7bit US-ASCII text.
   - 8bit: The content of the media type consists solely of CRLF-delimited
   8bit text.
   - binary: The content consists of an unrestricted sequence of octets.

I have seen from examples of other registered MIME types that the wording
is not always the same as above but, given that there is a registration
form with strict definitions, I am at a bit of a loss which I should
specify.

Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Thanks in advance,

Nik.

In Issue 21, Gunnar suggests adding support for "text message" modality:
https://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/slim/trac/ticket/21

There is a modality that we have not discussed at all yet. That is the
"text message" modality. It is not really interactive, but very often used
together with interactive media in a kind of slow pseudo-conversational
mode. One implementation is MSRP that is specified by the m=message media.
There seems to be some interest to extend our specification to handle that
modality as well.

Then the text message modality needs to be described and how it is
implicitly identified in sdp both in the main media m=message and in a
subchannel of a data channel.

[BA] Would it be sufficient to add an m=message example to Section 6.5?

Looking at https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-mmusic-data-channel-sdpneg
I am concerned about the potential complexity of allowing language
negotiation at the subchannel level. Is this really necessary?

Also, please send a request for review to the=20

I'd suggest something such as:

There are no encoding considerations for this=20
multipart other than that of the embedded body=20
parts. The embedded body parts (typically one=20
text/plain plus one or more message/*) may=20
contain ASCII or binary.

I suggest changing "may not" to "might not" or=20
"might fail to" since the words "may not" are=20
ambiguous in RFCs.

This is tricky, and I don't know what to propose. m=message can be used
for all kinds of media in message communication. But it is text
messaging that is realistic to use in a kind of pseudo - conversational
mode. It does not look really clean to just add a language attribute the
media specification and assume that it shall be understood as a
specification to use text messaging for pseudo-conversational mode with
text messaging.
I regret I proposed it late in the process. I think it should be
withdrawn.

Yes. it is needed for real-time text in WebRTC. But luckily the syntax
is defined. It is proposed to be included in the draft by issue #9. It
must be specified on subchannel level, because that is where the
specific streams used for the different modalities are transported.
The fact that language and modality negotiation in this way can be
introduced in webRTC is the reason why I have stopped arguing for using
the RFC 3480 / 3841 SIP language tag mechanism. So we should rather
agree on what is needed to indicate how the usage in a subchannel of
WebRTC data channel shall be specified. #9 has a proposal, but I am not
totally sure that it is sufficient.

is a modality that we have not discussed at all yet. That is
the "text message" modality. It is not really interactive,
but very often used together with interactive media in a
kind of slow pseudo-conversational mode. One implementation
is MSRP that is specified by the m=message media. There
seems to be some interest to extend our specification to
            handle that modality as well.<br>

the text message modality needs to be described and how it
is implicitly identified in sdp both in the main media

This is tricky, and I don't know what to propose. m=message can be
used for all kinds of media in message communication. But it is text
messaging that is realistic to use in a kind of pseudo -
conversational mode. It does not look really clean to just add a
language attribute the media specification and assume that it shall
be understood as a specification to use text messaging for
pseudo-conversational mode with text messaging.  <br>
I regret I proposed it late in the process.  I think it should be
    withdrawn.  <br>

I am concerned about the potential complexity of allowing
language negotiation at the subchannel level.  Is this
            really necessary?</p>

    </blockquote>
Yes. it is needed for real-time text in WebRTC.  But luckily the
syntax is defined. It is proposed to be included in the draft by
issue #9.  It must be specified on subchannel level, because that is
where the specific streams used for the different modalities are
    transported. <br>
The fact that language and modality negotiation in this way can be
introduced in webRTC is the reason why I have stopped arguing for
using the RFC 3480 / 3841 SIP language tag mechanism. So we should
rather agree on what is needed to indicate how the usage in a
subchannel of WebRTC data channel shall be specified. #9 has a
proposal, but I am not totally sure that it is sufficient.<br>
