Abstract:
IPv4-over-IPv6 transition mechanisms provide both IPv4 and IPv6
connectivity services simultaneously during the IPv4/IPv6 co-existing
period. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6 (DHCPv6)
options have been defined to configure Customer Edge (CE) in MAP-E,
MAP-T, and Lightweight 4over6. However, in many networks, the
configuration information may be stored in an Authentication
Authorization and Accounting (AAA) server, while user configuration
information is mainly provided by the Broadband Network Gateway (BNG)
through the DHCPv6 protocol. This document defines two new Remote
Authentication Dial In User Service (RADIUS) attributes that carry CE
configuration information from an AAA server to BNG.

Hi all,

We have updated the 12 version.
It has been added some description in section 4 and 6.1 regarding how the
S46 Container Option types and option codes permitted in the
Softwire46-Priority Attribute are used and specified.
Comments are appreciated.

Thanks
Yu

Subject: early MIB Doctor review for draft-ietf-softwire-map-mib-07

[not sure if draft-ietf-softwire-map-mib.all@ietf.org also includes the =
softwire WG mailing list. Anyways, I am not subscribed to that WG list, =
so I probably can't post there. Pls WG chairs forward if needed/wanted].

I did an early MIB doctor review for this document.

The syntax check with SMICNG is clean. Great.

My comments/questions:

- section 4 states:
The MAP-E MIB provides a way to configure and monitor the MAP =
devices
in MAP encapsulation mode through SNMP.
Yet there are no read-write or read-create objects defined in the MIB
module. So I don't think you can "configure" anything on the MAP =
devices
via SNMP with this MIB module

- section 4.1.1 states:
The mapRule subtree describes managed objects used for managing the
multiple mapping rules in the MAP encapsulation mode.
So, since the MIB module is read-only, I think I would change
s/managing/monitoring/. But maybe that is just a wording choice.

- section 4.1.2
       - The BR MUST perform a validation of the consistency of the =
source
IPv6 address and source port number for the packet using BMR.

       - The Customer Edge (CE) SHOULD check that MAP received packets'
transport-layer destination port number is in the range =
configured by
         MAP for the CE.
Mmmm... what is BR ? Please expand the acronym the first time you =
use it in
    your document. Same for BMR.
I am not sure that the MIB document is the place to tell =
(normatively (MUST/SHOULD)
a BR that it MUST perform a certain protocol function. That is (I =
assume) specified
    in the RFC7597 itself, right?
Maybe you mean to say that the BR (and CE) MUST and SHOULD report =
any invalid
packets as found per the rules in RFC7579. They MUST/SHOULD report =
them via this
MIB module (as per your MODULE Conformance).
Oh well, again this may be a wording issue.
If my interpretation here is correct, I can live with your wording =
although I think
it can be clearer and that the proper compliance language is in the =
proper document.

- section 5.
   I think I would change:

      5. Definitions

       MAP-E-MIB DEFINITIONS  ::=3D  BEGIN

       IMPORTS
          MODULE-IDENTITY, OBJECT-TYPE, mib-2,
          Integer32, Unsigned32, Counter64
             FROM SNMPv2-SMI
          ifIndex
             FROM IF-MIB
          InetAddressType, InetAddress,
          InetAddressPrefixLength
             FROM INET-ADDRESS-MIB
          OBJECT-GROUP, MODULE-COMPLIANCE
             FROM SNMPv2-CONF;

   Into

      5. Definitions

The following MIB module imports definitions from [RFC2578], =
[RFC2580],
      [RFC2863], and [RFC4001].

       MAP-E-MIB DEFINITIONS  ::=3D  BEGIN

       IMPORTS
          MODULE-IDENTITY, OBJECT-TYPE, mib-2,
          Integer32, Unsigned32, Counter64
             FROM SNMPv2-SMI -- RFC2578
          ifIndex
             FROM IF-MIB -- RFC2863
          InetAddressType, InetAddress,
          InetAddressPrefixLength
             FROM INET-ADDRESS-MIB -- RFC4001
          OBJECT-GROUP, MODULE-COMPLIANCE
             FROM SNMPv2-CONF; -- RFC2580

That way, you have a reference to each document (they are all =
normative)
and in the MIB module itself (where you cannot put =
references/citations) you
would still have document which RFC the imports are from. Handy =
when a MIB module
has been extracted from an RFC.

In the MIB module itself:

   mapRuleID OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX Integer32 (1..2147483647)
           MAX-ACCESS not-accessible

rule which is unique with each CE in the same BR."
           ::=3D { mapRuleEntry 1 }

Since this is an index object, it be better defined as unsigned 32.
See RFC4181, section 4.6.1.1. Specifically page 15, which states
      - Unsigned32 with a range that excludes zero is RECOMMENDED for
most index objects. It is acceptable to include zero in the
range when it is semantically significant or when it is used as

address type of the mapRuleIPv6Prefix and
                mapRuleBRIPv6Address."

Such MUST language is not recommended. The way to specify such =
mandatory
value you best use the MODULE COMPLIANCE statement. Such is =
RECOMMENDED
    as per RFC4181, page 26

    mapRuleIPv6Prefix OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX InetAddress(SIZE (0..16))
           MAX-ACCESS read-only
           STATUS current
           DESCRIPTION
"The IPv6 prefix defined in mapping rule which will be
assigned to CE. The address type is given by
               mapRuleIPv6PrefixType."
           ::=3D { mapRuleEntry 3 }

mmmmm, when the InetAddressType is ipv6(2), then my understanding of =
RFC4001
is that the SIZE for the InetAddress MUST be 16. Maybe Juergen can =
chime in here?

And if it is ALWAYS an IPv6 address, then maybe it is even better to =
use
    InetAddressIPv6 as the OBJECT-TYPE.

I see the same set of 2 objects for IPv4.

In my view, the idea of InetAddressType and InetAddress were/are to =
allow yopu to specify
one or a single pair that can hold each of the 2 (or even more if =
needed) AddressTypes.

So why are there separate objects for IPv4 and IPv6 ???

    mapRulePSID OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX Integer32
           MAX-ACCESS read-only
           STATUS current
           DESCRIPTION
"The PSID value algorithmically identifies a set of
               ports assigned to a CE."
           REFERENCE
"PSID: section 3 of RFC 7597."
           ::=3D { mapRuleEntry 9 }

Mmmm... section 3 of RFC7597 only defines the term. The algorithm =
is in section 5.1
Maybe that is a better place to point to.
Reading that section 5.1 in RFC7597, I wonder if "Integer32" is the =
best representation.
     In section 5.1, I see a PSID that is 6 bits (figure 2 on page 10). =
But there is also
text about a PSID of 0x00 and 0xFF, which does not fit in 6 bits.
I am not an expert (basically have no knowledge about) on RFC7597. =
But sofar I cannot
determine what the value range might be and how Integer32 is a good =
representation for
the PSID. Please explain (not just to me, but adding text to the =
internet drafts
and the DESCRIPTION clause of this object)

     mapRulePSIDLen OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX Integer32

My understanding sofar is that this object can never take a =
negative value,
so Unsigned32 would be better I think.

     mapRuleType OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX Integer32
           MAX-ACCESS read-only
           STATUS current
           DESCRIPTION
"The type of the mapping rule. A value of 0 means it

is a BMR; a non-zero value means it is a FMR."
          REFERENCE
"BMR, FMR: section 5 of RFC 7597."
           ::=3D { mapRuleEntry 13 }

That probably works. But it is probably much better to do a =
ENUMERATION, Which
has a SYNTAX of INTEGER and then lists enumberated values. That =
makes it much
more extensible in the future (if needed).

   mapMIBSecurityGroup OBJECT-GROUP
         OBJECTS {
            mapSecurityCheckInvalidv4,
            mapSecurityCheckInvalidv6 }
        STATUS current
        DESCRIPTION
" The collection of this objects are used to give the
        information on MAP security checks."
        ::=3D { mapMIBGroups 2 }

These objects are defined with ACCESS accessible-for-notify. I think =
that means
you have to define this group as a NOTIFICATION-GROUP instead of an =
OBJECT-GROUP.

  - Section 7. Security considerations:

These are the objects and their sensitivity/vulnerability:

       mapRuleIPv6PrefixType

       mapRuleIPv6Prefix

... etc (quite a list of objects).

But nowhere do I see text about "their sensitivity/vulnerability". =
??
     Still to be added?

[fuyu] Yes, since it is an index object and the value range is not =
include zero. I think unsigned 32 is better.

[fuyu] We always describe a Basic mapping rule as below:

A MAP node (CE or BR) can, via the BMR or equivalent FMR,
determine the IPv4 address and port set as shown below:

   EA bits offset: 40
   IPv4 suffix bits (p) Length of IPv4 address (32) -
                         IPv4 prefix length (24) =3D 8
   IPv4 address: 192.0.2.18 (0xc0000212)
   PSID start: 40 + p =3D 40 + 8 =3D 48
   PSID length: o - p =3D (56 - 40) - 8 =3D 8
   PSID: 0x34 (1232)

So I think display the values as (unsigned) integer or display it as =
0Xxxxxxxxx both will be OK.
Do you have the surggstions?

[fuyu] The value range of mapRulePSIDLen is greater than or equal to 0 =
and no more than 16, so do you think define as below
    =20
      mapRulePSIDLen OBJECT-TYPE
           SYNTAX Unsigned32(0..16)
   =20
  Will it make sense?

[fuyu] Yes, it is a good suggestion. The protocol function requirement =

[fuyu]:Different PSID values guarantee non-overlapping port sets.
The length of PSID is k bits, and the default value of PSID offset =
is 6 bits.
So the bit length of PSID is variable. Thank you for your question.
I have reconsidered the SYNTAS of the PSID. It can never be a =
negative value.
I think Unsigned32 will be better.

[fuyu]: mapSecurityCheckInvalidv4 and mapSecurityCheckInvalidv6 indicate =
the number of the invalid IPv4 or IPv6 packets received by the
MAP-E. So I think define this group as OBJECT-GROUP will be =
better.
I will change the ACCESS of these objects from =
accessible-for-notify into read-only.

[fuyu]: Some of the readable objects in this MIB module may be =
considered sensitive or
vulnerable in some network environments. These objects are readable,=20
so maybe they are considered sensitive or vulnerable in some use =
case.
We have a description why they are sensitive or vulnerable above the =

So do you just map the 4 octets of the PSID into this object?
Is it not better to then use OCTET-STRING with a SIZE(4) ??
Maybe with a DISPLY-HINT added as well

Do you normally display the value as an (unsigned) integer?
Or do you normally display it as 0Xxxxxxxxx ??
Or maybe as bits?

Not sure I understand: 0x34 (1232) ??? 0x34 in my mind is 52, no?

In fact I am not sure I understand much/any of the above.
But that is OK, if people who are familiar with (or must use/implement) this and
if they understand it then fine.

My personal feeling/thinking is that it is probably best displayed as 0Xxxxxxxxx.
That (I would think) makes it easier to see bit positions as opposed to an (unsigned)
integer. But in princople I can live with either. The idea/hope is that if you add
a DISPLAY HINT that everyone displays it in the same way.

I think that makes sense. Now you can see (machine readable) what the range

It states that they " may be considered sensitive of vulnerable".
But it does not state WHY or IN WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES they might be vulnerable.
What bad things are there that an intruder can do (or find out) when he/she
gets read access to these objects?
I.e. does he get to see confidential or private information? Does he learn
about a competitors internal network structure? Or something else?

[fuyu]:Thank you for your suggestions. I will define it as below:

RulePSID ::=3D TEXTUAL-CONVENTION
    DISPLAY-HINT "0x:"
    STATUS current

I am working on implementing this draft (started in version 4), and like
to add a few comments. It is based on an existing RFC 7341 client
(DHCPv4 over DHCPv6) which wasn't written by me, which was done by
modifying an existing DHCPv4 client to transparently wrap all messages in
DHCPv6 messages, so the DHCPv4 part doesn't really know about it.

My comments are split into three parts, first about the place of the
options, then about handling them, and finally some nitpicks.

1. The placement of the new options

I'll start with the placement of the (new) options. Pre-draft, the
DHCPv6 encapsulation was a strict transport and stateless. This draft
now adds both new options to the outer DHCPv6 messages as well the inner
DHCPv4 one. This seems quite awkward, as the client now needs to be able
to access both the outer envelope as well the inner message at the same
time for a full picture. IMHO especially awkward is the change from a
DHCPv6 OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR_HINT to a DHCPv4 OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR. This
caused a bit of spaghetti-code when trying to somehow pass information
between the (separated) code responsible for the DHCPv6
en-/decapsulation, and the actual DHCPv4 code. The DHCPv4 code needed to
get the contents of the DHCPv6 envelope at the appropriate place.

Having all three as DHCPv4 options would make it much more consistent,
as everything is now kept in one channel. This would also then preserve
RFC 7341's statement that "The DHCPv6-relay encapsulation is used solely
to deliver DHCPv4 packets to a DHCPv4-capable server, and does not
allocate any IPv6 addresses nor does it provide IPv6-configuration
information to the client."

The alternative that I could think of would be to move the _SADDR_HINT
and _BR options to the original DHCPv6 message that contains the
OPTION_DHCP4_O_DHCP6_SERVER option. Maybe create an container for them,
similar to how RFC 7598 defines containers for software46. The RFC 7341
client would then be able to already send the _SADDR in its discovers.

2. Handling the new options

The OPTION_S46_BR poses no large issues. The new
OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR_HINT caused and still causes a lot of headaches for
me. As far as my understanding with modern distributions (be they
desktop or embedded) is that the DHCP clients usually do no
configuration by their own, and just pass on the Lease's contents to a
networking management deamon after they received the ACK. This works
fine with DHCPv6, with DHCPv4, and with RFC 7341 DHCPv4overDHCPv6.

The new OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR_HINT now requires the network management
daemon to (potentially) allocate/assign a new IP address during the
offer/request phase (including the DAD), which makes the interaction
quite a bit more complex, as there are a few new potential error
transitions. There is now the awkward state where you might need to
revert network configuration after a NACK or error from the server, or a
timeout despite never having a valid lease. Of course if one wants to
avoid complexity one can just hope that we have a global address on the
wan interface already and always return that. This would be alleviated
by already having this option in the original DHCPv6 lease, as then the
network management daemon could allocate the IP address already during
the DHCPv6 lease acquisition handling phase.

And finally when adding support for it to a client that does
"transparent" DHCPv6 en-/decapsulation this means that the DHCPv6 code
now needs access to the DHCPv4 state machine to know when to include the
_SADDR option, and when to (not) expect it, as it has no DHCPv6 message
types to rely on.

3. Nitpicks

The flow diagram in "5. IPv6/IPv4 Binding Message Flow" makes it look
like the OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR is part of the DHCPv6 message, not part of
the embedded DHCPv4 message.

The option OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR is described in a subsection of "6.
DHCPv6 Options", despite it being a DHCPv4 option (and there being only
one DHCPv6 option, so the plural doesn't help either).

Both make it easy to mistake OPTION_DHCP4O6_SADDR as a DHCPv6 option,
and not a DHCPv4 one (as I did until I read the newest draft, and will
need to fix).

Also it feels a bit like the draft doesn't handle potential error cases
enough, although I can't really put my finger on it. One thing I am
wondering about is how the client should behave when it doesn't have any
assigned prefixes or global addresses? Is sending the link local address
fine? Should it abort in that case? How about ULA addresses? In case of
using DHCPv6 broadcast address as DHCP4ov6 server this could happen
AFAICT.

I hope these comments help improving the proposed standard.

Regards
Jonas Gorski

Hi Bert,

Thanks for your MIB doctor review.

I have updated the 08 version based on all your comments. Please see whether
it fix all your comments.

I have another question when I do the MIB module validation as the Severity
level is set to 6(most strict). It has warnings as below.

warning: `InetAddress' should be used instead of `InetAddressIPv6'
warning: `InetAddress' should be used instead of `InetAddressIPv4'

It is because we define the mapRuleIPv6Prefix and mapRuleIPv4Prefix as
below:
   mapRuleIPv6Prefix OBJECT-TYPE
       SYNTAX InetAddressIPv6
       MAX-ACCESS read-only
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION

  mapRuleIPv4Prefix OBJECT-TYPE
       SYNTAX InetAddressIPv4
       MAX-ACCESS read-only
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION

Shall we ignore these warnings?

Thanks a lot

Cheers

Yu

Hi,

since these objects seem to be IP version specific, I think it is OK
to ignore the warning. Perhaps consider adding comment such as:

-- The object mapRuleIPv6Prefix is IPv6 specific and hence it does
-- not use the version agnostic InetAddress.

This way, it is documented that any warnings related to this can be
ignored. (Otherwise, this question may come up again.)

Hi Juergen,

Thank you for your reply.

OK. I will add a note in the MIB.

Hi,

Here is a review of the current version of the draft.

Cheers,
Ian

Introduction

a1) This needs to be updated: RFC7597 is for MAP-E and encapsulation is =
the single mode described there. RFC7599 deals with translation and so =
probably doesn=E2=80=99t need to be mentioned at all as it=E2=80=99s not =
part of the scope.

a2) Section 4.1.2
The description of error cases is not correct. The checks that are =
performed by both CE and BR validate that the v6, v4 and l4 ports are =
consistent, not just the v6 and dest. ports. Please check RFC7597 =
section 8.1.

MIB Comments:

b1) It appears that the intention to provide a single model to be used =
by both BR and CE. For =E2=80=98mapRuleBRIpv6Address, the description =
only provides information about what the CE does with this value. Is it =
valid for a BR? What should the BR do with it?
Also, for the =E2=80=98mapRuleType=E2=80=99 field - Is there a case =
where a rule provisioned to a BR is not an FMR? (I=E2=80=99m not =
familiar enough with MAP BR implementations to know if this is the case)

b2) mapRuleID OBJECT-TYPE
           DESCRIPTION
"An identifier used to distinguish the multiple =
mapping
rule which is unique with each CE in the same BR.=E2=80=9D

[if - The description is unclear. If I understand the purpose of this =
object, it is to give a unique identifier to each rule. If this is the =
case, I would propose: =E2=80=9CA unique identifier used to distinguish =
mapping
           rules.=E2=80=9D

b3) The DESCRIPTION fields of mapRulePSIDLen and mapRuleOffset are =
identical. The text makes sense for mapRulePSIDLen, but is incorrect for =
mapRuleOffset.

b4)   RulePSID ::=3D TEXTUAL-CONVENTION
      DISPLAY-HINT "0x:"
      STATUS current
      DESCRIPTION
"It represents the PSID represented in the hexadecimal version
so as to display it more clearly."
      SYNTAX OCTET STRING (SIZE (4))

[if - Is 4 correct here? The allowable range for the PSID is 0..65535 =
which is 2 octets]

 b5) mapRuleEALen OBJECT-TYPE
       SYNTAX Unsigned32
       MAX-ACCESS read-only
       STATUS current
       DESCRIPTION
"The length of the Embedded-Address (EA) defined in
mapping rule which will be assigned to CE."
      REFERENCE
"EA: section 3 of RFC 7597."
       ::=3D { mapRuleEntry 10 }

[if - This can also be constrained for allowable values (0..48)]

b6) mapRuleType

[if - The choice that is being presented here isn=E2=80=99t inline with =
the F-Flag field described in sec 4.1 of RFC7598 (and by extension the =
FMR description in RFC7597). The F flag defines if a rule can be used =
