The first draft of MRCPv2 dates back to January 2004; the current draft (the
11th revision) is dated September 2006. Over the intervening 32 months,
MRCPv2 has evolved into a powerful and complete specification. The last
several months, while at times tedious (who said QA has to be fun?), have
proved very worthwhile in raising the quality of the specification to a
point where we can be reasonably assured of good coverage of core speech
processing use-cases as well as good interoperability over the corresponding
features.

Of course, no specification is perfect but eventually one reaches the point
where it is more beneficial and efficient to put the theory into practice
and seek real world feedback rather than continue to evolve the theory. And
so, in my opinion, we are at this point. With just one exception*, I believe
MRCPv2 has reached a sufficient level of maturity to be considered as a
proposed standard.

Dave

(*) I would encourage the proposed resolution of Issue 88 (Hotword
Recognition Timers) be applied.

Back in July, a thread talked about providing a way for the server to
provide the client with information about the start of speech. Andrew
Wahbe added that some applications might want to know the end of speech
as well. Although it sounded like there was general agreement that this
would be a useful feature, it doesn't look like this made it in to
draft-11. Are there plans to include information about this feature?

For reference, here's the start of that thread:

I agree with Dave's point on Issue 88. As currently specified, hotword
recognition does not address the use cases it was designed for. I would
like to suggest that this feature either be fixed or be removed from the
specification so that it can be properly addressed by a separate
specification.

Dear group,
Current draft (11th) looks fine for us. We think MRCPv2 is reasonably =
complete and needs feedback from real world applications. Although some =
issues are still opened, we trust on the IETF process and we hope there =
will be occasions to improve the specification in the future, based on =
the field response.
We believe reaching a stable standard in this field is becoming urgent =
to help the market in creating a large diffusion of the technology.
As a company deeply involved on MRCPv2 adoption, Loquendo is going to =
continue providing feedbacks and suggestions to improve the =
specification.

Patrizio Bergallo, Loquendo.

I believe that the standardization of MRCPv2 is extremely relevant in
facilitating the wider adoption of speech technology, and I support MRCPv2
draft-11 as a proposed standard.

The standardization discussions are productive, and have produced
quantifiable results based on community feedback.

The current draft does have some issues which are tracked for resolution,
but I also believe that draft-11 is a good point to move forward.

Just to be clear, the "go to IETF last call" version of MRCPv2 is -11. The
stuff in the issue tracker that are not already closed would be addressed in
the next *version* of MRCP. So far, the only issue that requires an update
before we go to IETF LC is Dave Burke's on Hotword Recognition Timers.

I agree with the points below.

I'm not in favor of addressing the hotword issue with a separate
specification, and rather have any potential clarifications addressed in
the MRCP specification.

I agree with Dave's point on Issue 88. As currently specified, hotword
recognition does not address the use cases it was designed for. I would
like to suggest that this feature either be fixed or be removed from the
specification so that it can be properly addressed by a separate
specification.

Subject: Re: [Speechsc] WGLC MRCPv2

The first draft of MRCPv2 dates back to January 2004; the current draft
(the 11th revision) is dated September 2006. Over the intervening 32
months,
MRCPv2 has evolved into a powerful and complete specification. The last
several months, while at times tedious (who said QA has to be fun?),
have proved very worthwhile in raising the quality of the specification
to a point where we can be reasonably assured of good coverage of core
speech processing use-cases as well as good interoperability over the
corresponding features.

Of course, no specification is perfect but eventually one reaches the
point where it is more beneficial and efficient to put the theory into
practice and seek real world feedback rather than continue to evolve the
theory. And so, in my opinion, we are at this point. With just one
exception*, I believe
MRCPv2 has reached a sufficient level of maturity to be considered as a
proposed standard.

Dave

(*) I would encourage the proposed resolution of Issue 88 (Hotword
Recognition Timers) be applied.

The Work Group Last Call for speechsc is formally closed. Thank you all for
your hard work.

The only issue that remained open that will be updated prior to publication
is Dave Burke's on Hotword Recognition Timers.

The process now is for Dave and I to go over the entire specification with a
fine-toothed comb, do a massive write-up for the IESG, and submit it to the
IESG for publication. They are sure to come up with a bunch of objections
that we will address, and bring to the list if necessary.

Experience says this will be a multi-week process that should be well
underway by San Diego.

Enjoy, and thanks for all the hard work!

(Apologies to multiple recipients)
(DO NOT REPLY)

WHAT: Tutorial on Interactive Connectivity Establishment (ICE)

WHEN: Tuesday, November 7 1130-1300
(lunch logistics are in progress and will be announced ASAP)

WHERE: Grande Ballroom A

WHO: Anyone with an interest in RAI work that would like to learn
           more about ICE.

WHY: ICE is one of the 'core' SIP specifications (according to the
SIP hitchhikers guide) and seeing some good adoption. It's the
IETF tool for NAT traversal for SIP-based media. However,
it's a complex specification. The tutorial will assume only
basic familiarity with SIP, SDP and NAT, and explain the rest.
Participants will emerge with a high level understanding of
the operation of ICE. The tutorial will be based on the
           pending -12 version.

RSVP: Please send a note to me with the Subject line "ice-is-nice"
           (mailto:jdrosen@cisco.com?Subject=ice-is-nice) so I can get a
count of the number of participants for lunch purposes.

!DO NOT REPLY TO THIS NOTE!

Hi sarvi,

In the draft 6 , the legend description of the header table does not define what is "-".

Does the "-" means the header field is not applicable and the header field MUST NOT be present in a request.

Pls clarify on this...

SPEAK-COMPLETE makes sense only if there was a 200 response meaning that
the request was initiated successfully.
i.e. SPEAK-COMPLETE makes sense if the resource was in a
IN-PROGRESS/PENDING state.
