This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your
lists.bell-labs.com mailing list memberships. It includes your
subscription info and how to use it to change it or unsubscribe from a
list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, spirits-request@lists.bell-labs.com) containing
just the word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be
sent to you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@lists.bell-labs.com. Thanks!

Folks:

Regarding the discussion below, it was suggested to me in a private
email that the CUSF functional entity of IN-CS2 be looked into.

Is there anyone on the list familiar with this and willing to pitch
in some time? Any discussion (and help) will be extremely fruitful, I
think...

Thanks,

- vijay

Vijay,
Are you trying to define the way supplementary services shall work
in the SPIRITS model ?

Some thoughts about the CUSF!

Three modes of operations have been defined for the CUSF (See ITU
Q.1238.7):

1) For relaying ROSE APDUs to/from an ISDN terminal

2) For triggering an IN service during the execution of a non-call
related supplementary service (e.g.; CCBS)

3) For relaying USI information to/from an ISDN terminal

Only the first two modes seem to be relevant for this discussion. On
both cases, a BCUSM - which includes a few DPs - is involved. The main
difference between the two options is the location of the supplementary
service execution. In the first case, the supplementary service is
executed in the SCF, the CUSF acts almost as a transparent relay. In the
second case, the supplementary service is executed by the switch. The
CUSF is used to enable an IN service to incluence the processing of the
supplementary service (e.g.; modify the called party number in a
CCBS-Request), just like the SSF does in a call related context.

The first option is not appropriate for SMS or Mobility Management are
these "services" - unlike ISDN supplementary services - are generally
not implemented using ROSE. The second option would make sense. However,
this would require extensions to the protocol as the INAP operations
used by the CUSF (e.g.; EventReportBCUSM)do not include SMS or
MM-related parameters.

It is interesting to note that GSM/UMTS standards do not use of the
CUSF for SMS. They use a dedicated state model, with SMS-specific DPs.
The INAP operations are not those defined for the CUSF but are also
specific to the SMS service.

I hope this helps.

Bruno

No; I think the word 'supplementary' in my email may have been
mis-interpreted. I understand that 'supplementary' is a well defined
term in the PSTN/ISDN/GSM domain.

In SPIRITS, I want to be able to provide services based on network
events that are not part of call setup, teardown, or maintenance. For
instance, in the wireless network, mobility management events are of
prime interest to us as a service enabler (some work has been done by
Daniel Moreno in cataloging these for SPIRITS, see
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-spirits-mobility-00.txt).

But there are a lot of other events happening that we can exploit.
For instance, a parent can subscribe to the event of a college bound
offspring's pre-paid card balance falling below a certain limit in
order to replenish the account (or rescind it, as the case may be).
Not to mention my SMS->IM service.

The question is how to represent a set of such events in an extensible
manner without tying the SPIRITS protocol to a particular service
instance.

Bruno Chatras' email on this topic (which was CC'd to the list) helps
as well; I need some time to understand the points he is making before
posting a response...

Thanks,

- vijay

Hi Igor,
The functionality is there to serve the same purpose only. Why to
re-invent the wheel. If there is something lacking to serve the purpose, the
intent can be enhance the existing functionalities.
