UPDATE: nominations are too sparse in several of the IESG areas: APP, OAM,=
RAI, and TSV. If you know one or more of those areas, exercise your socia=
l network and submit nominations. We'll be very grateful!

Is there someone you work with at IETF who has leadership potential and a g=
rowing track record? Please read this Nomcom call for nominations and consi=
der nominating her or him. Or several folks! Deadline for nominations is Oc=
tober 18.
Nominate soon to give your nominee(s) plenty time to fill in the questionna=
ire.

If you're nominated, even if you support the present incumbent, being revie=
wed by Nomcom is great IETF experience. The questionnaire offers a chance =
to think about IETF and about your area. Whether or not your candidacy pro=
gresses this time, you'll have gained some valuable insights, and you'll ha=
ve contributed greatly. This process only works because many IETFers take p=
art; please join in.

Lots more, including which positions are open, how to make a nomination (in=
cluding nomination of yourself), and how to send us your feedback on the de=
sired expertise, follows.

IETFers, let's hear from you! Make nominations, accept nominations!

If you have any questions about the process, feel free to get in touch with=
 me.

----- The Info You Need for Nominating -----

The 2013-14 Nominating Committee (Nomcom) is seeking nominations from now u=
ntil October 18, 2013. The open positions being considered by this year's N=
omcom can be found later in this section, and also on this year's Nomcom we=
bsite:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/

Information about the desired expertise for positions is here:
           https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/expertise

Nominations may be made by selecting the Nominate link at the top of the No=
mcom 2013 home page, or by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/nominate/

Note that nominations made using the web tool require an ietf.org datatrack=
er account. You can create a datatracker ietf.org account if you don't have=
one already by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/accounts/create/

Nominations may also be made by email to nomcom13 at ietf.org.
If you nominate by email, please include the word "Nominate" in the Subject=
and indicate in the email who is being nominated, their email address (to =
confirm acceptance of the nomination), and the position for which you are m=
aking the nomination. If you use email, please use a separate email for eac=
h person you nominate, and for each position (if you are nominating one per=
son for multiple positions).

Self-nomination is welcome! No need to be shy.

Nomcom 2013-14 will follow the policy for "Open Disclosure of Willing Nomin=
ees" described in RFC 5680. As stated in RFC 5680: "The list of nominees w=
illing to be considered for positions under review in the current Nomcom cy=
cle is not confidential". Willing nominees for each position will be listed=
in a publicly accessible way - anyone with a datatracker account may acces=
s the lists. In all other ways, the confidentiality requirements of RFC 37=
77/BCP10 remain in effect. All feedback and all Nomcom deliberations will =
remain confidential and will not be disclosed.

In order to ensure time to collect sufficient community feedback about each=
of the willing nominees, nominations must be received by the Nomcom on or =
before October 18, 2013. Please submit your nominations as early as possib=
le for the sake of your nominees, as we've set the questionnaire submission=
 deadline for October 25, 2013.

The list of people and posts whose terms end with the March 2014 IETF meeti=
ng, and thus the positions for which we are accepting nominations:

IAOC
Chris Griffiths

IAB
Bernard Aboba
Marc Blanchet
Ross Callon
Eliot Lear
Hannes Tschofenig

IESG
Barry Leiba (Applications)
Brian Haberman (Internet)
Benoit Claise (Operations and Management) Gonzalo Camarillo (RAI) Stewart B=
ryant (Routing) Sean Turner (Security) Martin Stiemerling (Transport)

Please be resourceful in identifying possible candidates for these position=
s, as developing our talent is a very crucial requirement for the IETF. Al=
so, please give serious consideration to accepting nominations you receive.

The summaries of the desired expertise for the positions, developed by the =
respective bodies, are found at:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/expertise/

In addition to nominations, the Nomcom seeks community input on the positio=

Dear all,

we just published a draft aimed at addressing the RTCP requirements
deliverable in the charter:

	http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-miniero-straw-b2bua-rtcp-00

The motivation for the draft also comes from implementation efforts we
devoted in that sense, working on WebRTC gateways in particular. The
idea is, considering these efforts, to also address the SRTP and STUN
deliverables, but we decided to start writing something down on RTCP
first and then maybe work on the others later on.

As most -00 it's still pretty rough, but most of the "juice" should be
already there. We tried to follow the organization the taxonomy draft
presents about B2BUAs handling media: of all of them, the media
termination section is still quite sketchy, but the others already
present some more meaningful content.

While working on the draft, Sergio also raised some valid points about
whether or not we should also address RTP management in B2BUAs,
especially when a B2BUA is terminating media. We decided, at least for
now, to just address those aspects of RTP that have an impact on RTCP,
since that's what the deliverable is about, but we felt it may be indeed
worthwhile to also discuss potential RTP issues somewhere in STRAW,
e.g., by describing the different things a B2BUA may/should (not) be
doing as a media terminator. Is this something you also see a need for,
and if so, would this require an additional deliverable or could it be
part of existing ones?

Any feedback will be more than welcome!
Lorenzo

Thanks for that effort Lorenzo!

Network PLANEs (such as user plane, control plane, management plane, signal=
ling plane, data plane, media plane, etc) aim to separate characteristics o=
f networks. Thus, different planes are NOT overlapping (because this would =
inherently violate a plane concept).

That said:
draft-ietf-straw-b2bua-taxonomy-02,=20
a description like: "A Media-plane B2BUA is one that operates at both the S=
IP and media
planes, not only on SIP messages but also SDP and potentially RTP/
   RTCP or other media."
violates actually the plane concept!

My suggestion,
either remove the notion of 'plane' in "x-plane B2BUA" terms,
or use the following terminology:

There are two B2BUA types:
a) B2BUA with a "SIP B2BUA" and a "media-plane B2BUA"=20
b) B2BUA with a "SIP B2BUA" and without a "media-plane B2BUA"

The existing B2BUA terminology is confusing.

Regards,
Albrecht

Subject: [straw] Draft on RTCP requirements deliverable

Dear all,

we just published a draft aimed at addressing the RTCP requirements
deliverable in the charter:

        http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-miniero-straw-b2bua-rtcp-00

Lorenzo

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Sip Traversal Required for Applications t=
o Work Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A Taxonomy of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Back-to-=
Back User Agents
	Author(s) : Hadriel Kaplan
                          Victor Pascual
	Filename : draft-ietf-straw-b2bua-taxonomy-03.txt
	Pages : 9
	Date : 2013-10-17

Abstract:
In many SIP deployments, SIP entities exist in the SIP signaling path
between the originating and final terminating endpoints, which go
beyond the definition of a SIP Proxy, performing functions not
defined in standards-track RFCs. The only term for such devices
provided in [RFC3261] is for a Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA), which
is defined as the logical concatenation of a SIP User Agent Server
(UAS) and User Agent Client (UAC).

There are numerous types of SIP Back-to-Back User Agents, performing
different roles in different ways. For Example IP-PBXs, Session
Border Controllers (SBC) [RFC5853] and Application Servers (AS).
This document identifies several common Back-to-Back User Agent
roles, in order to provide taxonomy other documents can use and
   reference.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Sip Traversal Required for Applications t=
o Work Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A Media-based Traceroute Function for the Session Initia=
tion Protocol (SIP)
	Author(s) : Hadriel Kaplan
	Filename : draft-ietf-straw-sip-traceroute-01.txt
	Pages : 6
	Date : 2013-10-21

Abstract:
SIP already provides the ability to perform hop-by-hop traceroute
for SIP messages using the Max-Forwards header field, in order to
determine the reachability path of requests to a target. A
mechanism for media-loopback calls has also been defined separately,
which enables test calls to be generated which result in media being
looped back to the originator. This document describes a means of
performing hop-by-hop traceroute-style test calls using the media-
loopback mechanism, in order to test the media path when SIP
   sessions go through media-relaying B2BUAs.

Subject: [straw] Draft on RTCP requirements deliverable
Dear all,

we just published a draft aimed at addressing the RTCP requirements
deliverable in the charter:

        http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-miniero-straw-b2bua-rtcp-00

Lorenzo

(As co-chair)

Hi,

As you may have seen, a new version (-01) of the trace-route draft was subm=
itted a few days ago. One major change was that the draft no longer uses a =
new response code (202), based on the list discussions.

The chairs believe that the draft is now ready for WGLC, and unless people =
have issues with that we intend to start the WGLC *after* the upcoming IETF=
 meeting in Vancouver.

As always, we would like to ask for volunteers, committing to performing a =
WGLC review. Please contact the chairs if you would like to volunteer.

But, anyone is of course welcome to comment at any time - no need to wait u=
ntil the WGLC has "officially" started :)

Please note that the IANA considering sections still says the following:

"This document makes no request of IANA yet - if a new parameter or
field needs to be inserted when answering the INVITE, then =
it will
                be registered in IANA."

The text is a left-over from when we were still considering a new 202 respo=
nse code etc. It will be corrected in the next version of the draft, as the=
re now is no request of IANA.

Thanks!

Regards,

Christer & Victor

Hi,

As you may have seen, Albrecht has raised concern regarding the "media-plan=
e B2BUA" terminology in the b2bua-taxonomy document (it is also used in oth=
er STRAW documents).

His issue has been that "media-plane" refers to actions taking place on the=
 media-plane, while the b2bua-taxonomy document defines "media-plane B2BUA"=
as an entity that performs actions both on the signaling plane and the med=
ia plane.

An easy way to address that would be to simply rename "media-plane B2BUA" t=
o "signaling/media-plane B2BUA", or something similar.

It would be a simple task to do (there should only 2-3 instances in the dra=
ft), and would not require us to move the b2bua-taxonomy document back to t=
he WG (it is currently ongoing IESG review).

Would anyone object to such change?

Regards,

Christer

You may consider these to be WGLC comments on this draft:

(I'm sorry not to be providing precise text changes for these comments.
But I think they require some substantial rewriting, not just surgical
edits.)

Section 3 and is sub-sections have some problems that derive from its
evolution. Originally a new header, B2bua-Hops was used. We have since
decided to use Max-Forwards instead. There is still a reference to
B2bua-Hops in this section.

Also, while instructions for the receiving B2BUA are given, the
instructions for the UAC are skimpy. I think something should say that
it should first send the request with Max-Forwards:0, and then increment
it one by one until it gets an error unrelated to the Max-Forwards, or a
success that doesn't have the special reason code. And during that
process it may get 483 responses (from proxies or B2BUAs that don't
support this mechanism) and must ignore those.

Section 3.2 is confusing to be in the way it conflates B2BUA and UAS.
ISTM this section should distinguish between a device that judges itself
to be the intended destination of the request, and one that judges
itself to be a B2BUA intermediary. If it is the intended destination,
then it acts normally, without regard to Max-Forwards. If it judges
itself to be an intermediary, then it checks Max-Forwards. If its zero
then either it answers 483, or else it responds 200 with the special
Reason and sets up the loopback.

Also in 3.2, note that:

When the final UAS answers a loopback-based INVITE with a Max-
Forwards greater than 0, the Reason header would not be added to the
response and the UAC will know the traceroute is complete.

is off by one. It should say "greater than or equal to 0". But
addressing my other comments will probably cause it to be rewritten anyway.

Since we decided not to do the 205 response, the Reason header becomes
key. I'm a little uncomfortable with specifying that we use reason 483
with a *specific* reason-text value. I think we either say the 483
reason means this regardless of the reason-text, or else register a new
reason code for this. (But registering a new reason code seems like
overkill.)

	Thanks,
	Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank You very much for your comments!

(But registering a new reason code seems like
overkill.)

        Thanks,
        Paul

I'm fine with the current text, but would have no objection if the WG decide=

Yes; I provided the same comment off list on 6/19.

I agree that requiring the specific reason-text value might not desirable. =
This is because I view the text parameter to be similar to the status-line=
's reason-phrase. If something is needed instead of just 483 for automatio=
n reasons, the reason-params potentially could be expanded to include a new=
 parameter such as "traceroute".

The following is an RFC 3261 section 7.2 snippet.

"The Status-Code is a 3-digit integer result code that indicates the
outcome of an attempt to understand and satisfy a request. The
Reason-Phrase is intended to give a short textual description of the
Status-Code. The Status-Code is intended for use by automata,
whereas the Reason-Phrase is intended for the human user. A client
is not required to examine or display the Reason-Phrase."
