Hi Alvaro,

The scope of the WG is disciplining the behaviour of B2BUAs, mostly, so
that's why the document is focused on those topologies in particular.

Thanks for the advice, I'll move the references as suggested. As to
REMB, other reviews addressed the same point and I plan to remove
references to that (which was originally added to address its extensive
usage in WebRTC) and replace the examples/discussions with similar
feedback, e.g., TMMBR.

Thanks!
Lorenzo

It does, thanks for the proposed text! Alia and Ben proposed some minor
revision to this in related comments, so I'll integrate the new text in
the next version.

Good point. Do you think adding some text like "A B2BUA SHOULD NOT
randomly drop or forward RTCP feedback of the same type within the
context of the same session, as that may lead to confusing, if not
broken, feedback to the recipients of the message." would help clarify
the consequences of such a behaviour? If you think it's worthwhile, I
might add as an example the RFC 7002 block one you presented.

You're right, I'll fix this.

Alia, Ben,

thanks for proposing fixes to the text! I agree this does clarify the
point we were trying to make, and significantly improves the paragraph.
I'll integrate this in the next version of the document.

Thanks!

Hi Spencer,

thanks for reviewing the document! I agree with you that this is an
issue. The plan is to replace the parts where we talk about REMB with
references to standard documents with similar purposes, e.g., TMMBR
(which if I'm not mistaken has been implemented in Firefox to address
the same requirement REMB fulfilled). Do you believe this change would
fix the problem?

Thanks!
Lorenzo

That would help somewhat (although you=E2=80=99d have to explain what =
you mean by =E2=80=9Cfeedback of the same type=E2=80=9D), but I think =
there is a broader question here about all of the possible information =

7002 example because it=E2=80=99s a document produced somewhat recently =

blocks and other RTCP info is warranted, *if* B2BUAs are actually =

I would say that it is a SHOULD unless the signalling component has
verified that demultiplexing can be performed without any RTP Payload
Type rewrites, i.e. no overlap between any RTP PTs and the RTCP PT
space. This is quite likely in many point to point via the MR scenarios,
but becomes possibly difficult in any multiparty scenarios.

Yes, I wonder if you should rather point out that one can't use an MR in
this case, but can use a very basic Media-Aware Relay (Translator) that
only translates the CNAME items, including the RTP header extension if
negotiated.

I think the relevant level here is to point out that there exist RTP
header extensions, and especially the SDES ones, i.e. pointer to RFC7941
that can result in that information that has been the responsibility of
RTCP can show up in RTP and thus require translation of also RTP
packets. This has potential MTU issues.

Yes, but also RTCP SR needs to be locally generated based on what is
actually sent. So, I think there is a point of pressing a generic
clarification that SFU results in RTP sequence number rewrites affecting
RTCP.

I think you should leave it in, I have no other example which actually
has deployment, maybe something like this:

REMB: [I-D.alvestrand-rmcat-remb] is a deployed application layer
specific RTCP Payload-Specific Feedback message. If negotiated to be
used a media-aware B2BUA MUST properly rewrite the additional SSRC
identifier(s) in REMB packets, if it changed the related RTP
       SSRC of the media sender.

This was mentioned in a few ballots (including mine) during IESG
evaluation, so I'd like to confirm that Magnus's suggestion works for me.

Thanks!

Spencer, Magnus,

sorry for this awfully late reply, busy days... thanks for the
additional feedback! Just so that I'm sure we're on the same page, does
this mean that we can keep the reference to the obsolete document as
well, or should we just mention REMB without the reference itself?

I'll work on a revised version of the document next week, as tomorrow
and Friday it's holiday here in Italy.

Thanks,
Lorenzo

I am fine with maintaining the reference, it makes it simpler to find.
However, one could potentially argue that the combination with MUST
makes this a normative reference to a draft document. It is possible
that one should consider reformulating this in a more informative
fashion just stating that it will be necessary to perform the
translation for this message.

That's an argument that I'm likely to make :-)

Could this be reformulated to say something like:

"[I-D.alvestrand-rmcat-remb] describes an RTCP Payload-Specific feedback
message that reports the receiver's available bandwidth to the the
sender. As of the time of this writing, REMB has been widely deployed,
but has not been standardized. The REMB mechanism will not function
correctly across a media-aware B2BUA that changes the SSRC of the media
sender unless it also changes the SSRC values in the REMB packet."

Thanks!

Ben.

&gt; &gt;&gt; additional feedback! Just so that I&#39;m sure we&#39;re on t=
he same page,<br>
&gt; &gt;&gt; does<br>
&gt; &gt;&gt; this mean that we can keep the reference to the obsolete docu=
ment<br>
&gt; &gt;&gt; as well, or should we just mention REMB without the reference=
<br>
&gt; &gt;&gt; itself?<br>
&gt; &gt;<br>
&gt; &gt; I am fine with maintaining the reference, it makes it simpler to<=
br>
&gt; &gt; find. However, one could potentially argue that the combination<b=
r>
&gt; &gt; with MUST makes this a normative reference to a draft document. I=
t<br>
&gt; &gt; is possible that one should consider reformulating this in a more=
<br>
&gt; &gt; informative fashion just stating that it will be necessary to<br>
&gt; &gt; perform the translation for this message.<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; That&#39;s an argument that I&#39;m likely to make :-)<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; Could this be reformulated to say something like:<br>
&gt;<br>
&gt; &quot;[I-D.alvestrand-rmcat-remb] describes an RTCP Payload-Specific<b=
r>
&gt; feedback message that reports the receiver&#39;s available bandwidth t=
o<br>
&gt; the the sender. As of the time of this writing, REMB has been widely<b=
r>
&gt; deployed, but has not been standardized. The REMB mechanism will not<b=
r>
&gt; function correctly across a media-aware B2BUA that changes the SSRC<br=

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Sip Traversal Required for Applications to Work of the IETF.

Title : Guidelines to support RTCP end-to-end in Back-to-Back User Agents (B2BUAs)
        Authors : Lorenzo Miniero
                          Sergio Garcia Murillo
                          Victor Pascual
	Filename : draft-ietf-straw-b2bua-rtcp-16.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2016-12-16

Abstract:
SIP Back-to-Back User Agents (B2BUAs) are often designed to also be
on the media path, rather than just intercepting signalling. This
means that B2BUAs often implement an RTP/RTCP stack as well, thus
leading to separate multimedia sessions that the B2BUA correlates and
bridges together. If not disciplined, though, this behaviour can
severely impact the communication experience, especially when
statistics and feedback information contained in RTCP messages get
lost because of mismatches in the reported data.

This document defines the proper behaviour B2BUAs should follow when
also acting on the signalling/media plane in order to preserve the
   end-to-end functionality of RTCP.

Dear all,

this version should address all the IESG reviews I've received. Please
let me know if I missed something, or if any of the points that were
addressed are still an issue.

Thanks!
Lorenzo

I see that version 16 at least partially addresses this. the text added
an some examples to help clarify "...of the same type:

"(e.g., a specific XR block type, or specific Feedback messages)"

Unless I missed something, the text does not attempt the more
comprehensive review that Alissa mentioned. Such a review could add
quite a bit of effort, and I'm not sure the working group has the energy
for that these days. Would it make sense to add some disclaimer text to
the effect of "This document does not attempt to analyze the impact of
dropping or aggregating each existing XR block or RTCP message"?

Thanks!

Ben.

Hi Ben,

you're right, I didn't delve into the details of each possible XR
block, as that would have been quite complex in such a short time. The
text I added was basically aimed at specifying that bad things can
happen if you drop RTCP packet type X (whether X is an XR report/block
or something else) and then you let the next packet of same type X
through instead, without some logic/criterion/adaptation behind it. I
can definitely add the statement you suggested if you believe it can
remove the ambiguity from the meaning of the paragraph.

Thanks!
Lorenzo

Let's see what Alissa thinks about how this fits her discuss comment. Alissa?

Thanks! I assume that means the most recent update to the draft without
additional clarification.

revision. I sent a separate email to Stephen to see if he is ready to
clear with this version.

Thanks!

Ben.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Sip Traversal Required for Applications to Work of the IETF.

Title : Guidelines to support RTCP end-to-end in Back-to-Back User Agents (B2BUAs)
        Authors : Lorenzo Miniero
                          Sergio Garcia Murillo
                          Victor Pascual
	Filename : draft-ietf-straw-b2bua-rtcp-17.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2016-12-22

Technical Summary

SIP Back-to-Back User Agents (B2BUAs) are often envisaged to also be on the media path, rather than just intercepting signalling. This means that B2BUAs often implement an RTP/RTCP stack as well, whether to act as media transcoders or to just passthrough the media themselves, thus leading to separate multimedia sessions that the B2BUA correlates and bridges together. If not disciplined, though, this behaviour can severely impact the communication experience, especially when statistics and feedback information contained in RTCP packets get lost because of mismatches in the reported data.
This document defines the proper behaviour B2BUAs should follow when also acting on the signalling/media plane in order to preserve the end-to-end functionality of RTCP.

Working Group Summary

The WG path of this document was reasonably short and efficient. Several technical comments were made during reviews and all were resolved with consensus. There is consensus in the STRAW WG to publish this document.

Document Quality

The guidelines and procedures in the document is based on input and experience from the implementer community.
