Abstract:
   Abstraction and Control of TE Networks (ACTN) refers to the set of
   virtual network operations needed to orchestrate, control and manage
   large-scale multi-domain TE networks, so as to facilitate network
   programmability, automation, efficient resource sharing, and end-to-
   end virtual service aware connectivity and network function
   virtualization services.

   This document explains how the different types of YANG models
   defined in the Operations and Management Area and in the Routing
   Area are applicable to the ACTN framework. This document also shows
   how the ACTN architecture can be satisfied using classes of data
   model that have already been defined, and discusses the
   applicability of specific data models that are under development. It
   also highlights where new data models may need to be developed.

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Maybe it's just me but I think for this yang model I would have appreciated a
little bit more intro text given some more context on how and when these models
and types are used.

Especially I would have appreciated more context what normality means and is
used for. Not sure I fully understand normality. Can you maybe briefly explain
what it is used for?

Also one more concrete comment on available-bandwidth and utilized-bandwidth
(e.g. p. 47): you say that this is the measured bandwidth and later on you give
an interval config value as well. However, I think it would be good to be more
concrete. I believe you have in mind the _average_ value over the measurement
interval, right? If so, maybe write it down like this in the description. Is
there maybe a reference you can provide? Or maybe you can even point at some
IPPM documents...?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
DISCUSS:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

There's a couple points (describe further in the comment section) that
I'd like to get a bit more clarity on:

(1) the semantics of admin-group hex strings of length smaller than 11

(2) the units for the te-bandwidth numerical values (and in what cases
no units are needed), and for performance-metrics-*-way-bandwidth values

(3) whether threshold-accelerated-advertisement's use of relative vs.
absolute values requires any special handling

(4) whether we want to specify any requirements/error-handling/etc. when
there is potential for "nonsense" configuration, such as a
max-constraint being configured as numerically smaller than a
min-constraint

(5) what the "variation" in the te-packet-types module's leafs is
intending to measure.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

In general it's hard to examine many of these types and see whether they
are fit for purpose without some sense of how they would be used, but of
course following a chain of references for all of the types in question
wouldu be tedious to the point of exhaustion. I'm reluctant to start
getting into examples (since such a list would necessarily be
incomplete), but if you want one, the 'suppression-interval' leaf has a
very terse description, that will presumably be supplemented by some
text in some other document about what exactly is getting suppressed and
when, but if I were to try to implement from just this document I'd be
doing a lot of guessing.

Section 3

   types for TE generic types and ietf-te-packet-types for packet
   specific types. Other technology specific TE types are outside the

nits: "packet-specific" and "technology-specific" to hyphenate the
compound adjectives.

Section 3.1

   te-node-id:

      A type representing the identifier for a node in a TE topology.
      The identifier is represented as 32-bit unsigned integer in the
      dotted-quad notation. This attribute MAY be mapped to the Router

Why is te-node-id IPv4-centric?  E.g., RFC 6119 describes an "IPv6 TE
Router ID" TLV as well as the "TE Router ID" TLV that we reference here
for the node ID.
Furthermore, either it's a 32-bit unsigned integer or it's represented
in the dotted-quad notation, but the dotted-quad notation doesn't really
count as a 32-bit unsigned integer.

   te-metric:

      A type representing the TE link metric as defined in [RFC3785].

(editorial) the phrase "link metric" does not appear in RFC 3785.

Section 3.2

   The ietf-te-packet-types module covers the common types and groupings
   specific packet technology.

nit: I think there's a word missing here.

   performance-metrics-attributes-packet:

      A YANG grouping for the augmentation of packet specific metrics to
      the generic performance metrics grouping parameters.

nit(?) I can't tell which way the augmentation is supposed to go, just
from this text.

Section 4

  typedef admin-group {
    type yang:hex-string {
      /* 01:02:03:04 */
      length "1..11";
    }
    description
      "Administrative group/Resource class/Color representation in
       hex-string type.";
    reference "RFC3630 and RFC5305";

RFC 5305 says to treat this as essentially a bitmask. What are the
semantics when I only supply a string of (say) length 1 or 2?

  typedef performance-metrics-normality {
       [...]
    reference
      "RFC7471: OSPF Traffic Engineering (TE) Metric Extensions.
       RFC8570: IS-IS Traffic Engineering (TE) Metric Extensions.
       RFC7823: Performance-Based Path Selection for Explicitly
       Routed Label Switched Paths (LSPs) Using TE Metric
       Extensions";

None of these three references describes "normal" or "abnormal".

  typedef te-bandwidth {
    type string {
      pattern
        '0[xX](0((\.0?)?[pP](\+)?0?|(\.0?))|'
      + '1(\.([\da-fA-F]{0,5}[02468aAcCeE]?)?)?[pP](\+)?(12[0-7]|'
      + '1[01]\d|0?\d?\d)?)|0[xX][\da-fA-F]{1,8}|\d+'
      + '(,(0[xX](0((\.0?)?[pP](\+)?0?|(\.0?))|'
      + '1(\.([\da-fA-F]{0,5}[02468aAcCeE]?)?)?[pP](\+)?(12[0-7]|'
      + '1[01]\d|0?\d?\d)?)|0[xX][\da-fA-F]{1,8}|\d+))*';
    }

Can the document shepherd please report what validation has been done
for this pattern?

       For packet switching type, a float number is used, such as
       0x1p10.

What kind of units are implied for this (and the other types)?

  typedef te-metric {
    type uint32;
    description "TE link metric";
    reference "RFC3785";

[same comment about "link metric" and 3785]

  typedef te-node-id {

       the dotted-quad notation.

[same comment about uint32 vs. dotted-quad]

  typedef te-oper-status {

  identity oam-mep-entity-desired {

We probably should expand Maintenance Entity Group End Point (and MIP,

Is there a mismatch between "desired" and "required"?

  identity rtm-set-desired {
    base lsp-attributes-flags;

Is there a mismatch regarding "desired" in the identity name vs.
description?

  identity link-protection-type {
    description "Base identity for link protection type.";
  }
  identity link-protection-unprotected {
    base link-protection-type;

[I assume the WG had some good discussion about identities vs.
enumeration and don't want to second-guess that.]

  identity association-type-recovery {
    base association-type;
    description
      "Association Type Recovery used to association LSPs of
       same tunnel for recovery";

nit: the grammar seems weird, here; maybe a missing word?

  identity path-locally-computed {
    base path-computation-method;
    description
      "indicates a constrained-path LSP in which the
      path is computed by the local LER";
    reference "RFC3209";

In line with the gen-art reviewer's comments, a section ref might be
useful here.

  identity path-externally-queried {
    base path-computation-method;

      returned by the external source is not required to provide a
      wholly resolved path back to the originating system - that is to
      say, some local computation may also be required";

nit: "provide a wholly resolved path back to the originating system"
could potentially be read ambiguously about whether "back to the
originating system refers to the path or where the (partial) result is
returned to.

  identity te-tunnel-type {
    [...]

There is no need for a mp2p or mp2mp tunnel type?

  identity tunnel-state-type {
    description
      "Base identity for TE tunnel states";

This is just "tunnel state" not "operational state"?

  identity lsp-state-type {
    description
      "Base identity for TE LSP states";

Is there a state machine for which transitions between states based on
this identity are allowed, or is it basically just a full mesh?

  identity path-invalidation-action-drop-tear {
    base path-invalidation-action-type;
    description
      "TE path invalidation action tear";

Is there a reference for this (or the other
path-invalidation-action-type)? My naive reading wants to complete it
to "teardown" but I have low confidence that is correct.

  identity path-metric-optimize-includes {
    [...]
  identity path-metric-optimize-excludes {
    base path-metric-type;
    description
      "A metric that optimizes the number of excluded resources
       specified in a set";

optimizes to minimize or maximize it?

  grouping performance-metrics-one-way-bandwidth {

What are the units on the bandwidth values herein? bits per second?

      container threshold-accelerated-advertisement {
        description
          "When the difference between the last advertised value and
           current measured value exceed this threshold, anomalous
           announcement will be triggered.";
        uses performance-metrics-thresholds;

Are we reusing the performance-metrics-threshold container, which up
until now has been used for absolute measurements, to hold the
corresponding relative values (differences)?

  grouping optimization-metric-entry {
    [...]
    leaf weight {

Where is the sense of the 'weight' leaf defined? That is, to larger
weight values get more traffic or less traffic?

    container path-srlgs-names {
        [...]
        leaf-list names {
          type string;
          description "List named SRLGs";

nit: missing "of"?

  grouping generic-path-disjointness {
    description "Path disjointness grouping";
    leaf disjointness {
      type te-path-disjointness;
      description
        "The type of resource disjointness.
         Under primary path, disjointness level applies to
         all secondary LSPs. Under secondary, disjointness
         level overrides the one under primary";

What does "under" mean? It seems like it has something to do with the
position in the hierarchy where this grouping gets instantiated, which
is potentially subtle.

    container path-properties {
      config false;
      [...]
      container path-route-objects {
        description
          "Container for the list of route objects either returned by

        list path-route-object {
          key index;
          ordered-by user;

(How do 'config false' and 'ordered-by user' interact?)

Section 5

   grouping performance-metrics-attributes-packet {
     [...]
     uses te-types:performance-metrics-attributes {
       augment performance-metrics-one-way {
         leaf one-way-min-delay {
         [...]
         leaf one-way-max-delay {

What kind of sanity or error checking is there for the nodes in this
model, e.g., if max delay is configured to be smaller than min delay?

         leaf one-way-delay-variation {
           type uint32 {
             range 0..16777215;
           }
           description "One-way delay variation in micro seconds.";

What does "variation" mean? Deviation from mean? Variance? Mean
absolute error?

         leaf one-way-packet-loss {
           type decimal64 {
             fraction-digits 6;
             range "0 .. 50.331642";

Is there a reason for the oddly specific upper limit?
I also can't quite convince myself from the RFC 7950 grammar whether the
quotes on the range are valid and/or needed.

I also am unsure as to how useful the "normality" is for some of these,
like the packet loss and delay-variation values.

[same comments about two-way metrics as one-way metrics, I think.
Also the -packet variants.]

Section 7

We probably could say more here if we want, though I'm as-yet decided on
whether we should.
That is, things like editing the config could cause traffic to be
disallowed, routed on suboptimal paths, routed through locations more
easily targeted for other purposes, etc., and reading config/status
could reveal information about network topology, which sites might be
most sensitive as targets for subsequent attacks, etc.. It's less clear
if there's much that would allow for identification of specific
users/customers or their traffic, though. Maybe some of the DSCP stuff,
in some cases.

Section 10.2

A question for the responsible AD: do references that are used in
"reference" statements need to be normative references? (E.g., RFC
3471.)

Hello,

I have been selected as the Routing Directorate reviewer for this draft.
The Routing Directorate seeks to review all routing or routing-related
drafts as they pass through IETF last call and IESG review, and
sometimes on special request. The purpose of the review is to provide
assistance to the Routing ADs. For more information about the Routing
Directorate, please see
http://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/rtg/trac/wiki/RtgDir

Although these comments are primarily for the use of the Routing ADs, it
would be helpful if you could consider them along with any other IETF
Last Call comments that you receive, and strive to resolve them through
discussion or by updating the draft.

Intended Status: Informational

I have some minor concerns about this document that I think should be
resolved before publication.
The concerns might in some cases be considered to be nits.

Comments:

The document describes scenarios in which CCDR, a technology that
combines the advantages or distributed and centralized control, could be
deployed.
The document also report on testing that has been performed with this
technology.

Major Issues:
No major issues found.

This a very interesting and valuable document that should be progressed
to RFC.
It is refreshing to see an attempt to take advantage of distributed and
centralized
control technologies and merge them together to a single whole.

Minor Issues:

I found the document well worth reading and think about, I also found
it somewhat hard to read, most of this probably depends on my
lack of expertise in the area.

However:

- I would consider doing a English language review, I don't think there
   is anything wrong, but the language is sometimes a bit heavy.
   Sometimes the choice of word could be discussed, in a specification
   I would rather expect "advantage" rather than "merit".

- I'd like to see exactly which specification that has been tested early
   in the document, preferably in the Introduction.

- I would expand the Abstract with one or two paragraphs.
   When I worked for larger companies, I used to say that the abstract
   should be written such that my immediate manager could read it and
   understand what it is all about.

   Since the abstract is supposed to self-contained and separable from
   the RFC (see RFC 7997) abbreviations in the abstract is to be avoided
   (or expanded).

- Abbreviations
   The RFC Editor Abbreviations list
   (https://www.rfc-editor.org/materials/abbrev.expansion.txt)
   gives a good idea on the rules that applies to abbreviations in RFCs.
   The basic rule is that an abbreviation is expanded the first time
   it is used.
   In this document there are abbreviations, for example in figures, that
   is not expanded, e.g. CR, SR, BRAS and IDC

  - I also have a small concern about listing "alternative" technologies
    (MPLS-TE, SR and DETNET) in the introduction, it is hard to come away
    without the impression that these technologies are seen as
    insufficient.
    Admittedly they do not solve the problem that CCDR solves, but they
    are well suited to solve the problem they were designed for.

Nits:

I'm unclear about nits vs. minor concerns for this document, and listed
everything as minor concerns.

/Loa

PS
I'm sorry that this review has been delayed.

COMMENT:
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I concur with Ben Kaduk and Mirja Kühlewind comments about the utility of
additional context for the model.

Section 7. Other models will import this one, and specific security
considerations will have to be written for them. Nevertheless, the general
caution provided here could be a bit more specific perhaps on the order of:

-- Per “Write operations (e.g., edit-config) to these data nodes without proper
protection can have a negative effect on network operations”, doesn’t seem to
adequately cover security/privacy issues such as misrouting of traffic for
eavesdropping/inspection, circumventing existing defenses, modification or
replay; and business operation issues such as increased transit bills due to
inappropriate/malicious configuration.

-- Per “The access to such data nodes may be considered sensitive or vulnerable
in some network environments” doesn’t explain the rationale such as that
revealing detailed information about network configuration could exploited in
future attacks.

	Pages           : 11
	Date            : 2019-08-25

Abstract:
   This document defines the framework for traffic engineering within
   native IP network, using Dual/Multi-Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)
   sessions strategy and Path Computation Engine (PCE) -based central
   control architecture. The proposed central mode control framework
   conforms to the concept that defined in [RFC8283]. The scenario and
   simulation results of traffic engineering in Native IP network is
   described in draft [I-D.ietf-teas-native-ip-scenarios].

	Date            : 2019-08-25

Abstract:
   The requirements for the End to End(E2E) performance assurance are
   emerging within the service provider network, there are various
   solutions to meet such demands, but there is no one solution can meet
   these requirements in native IP network, especially one universal
   solution can cover intra-domain and inter-domain scenarios together.

   This document describes the scenarios and simulation results for Path
   Computation Elements (PCE) in native IP network, which integrates the
   advantage of distributed protocols, and the power of centrally
   control technologies to provide one feasible traffic engineering
   solution in various complex scenarios for the service provider.

Hello,

I have been selected as the Routing Directorate reviewer for this draft. =

The Routing Directorate seeks to review all routing or routing-related =
drafts as they pass through IETF last call and IESG review, and =
sometimes on special request. The purpose of the review is to provide =
assistance to the Routing ADs. For more information about the Routing =
Directorate, please see =
=E2=80=8Bhttp://trac.tools.ietf.org/area/rtg/trac/wiki/RtgDir

Although these comments are primarily for the use of the Routing ADs, it =
would be helpful if you could consider them along with any other IETF =
Last Call comments that you receive, and strive to resolve them through =
discussion or by updating the draft.

I have some minor concerns about this document that I think should be =
resolved before publication.
The concerns might in some cases be considered to be nits.

Comments:

The document describes scenarios in which CCDR, a technology that =
combines the advantages or distributed and centralized control, could be =
deployed.
The document also report on testing that has been performed with this =
technology.

Major Issues:
No major issues found.

This a very interesting and valuable document that should be progressed =
to RFC.
It is refreshing to see an attempt to take advantage of distributed and =
centralized control technologies and merge them together to a single =
whole.

Minor Issues:

I found the document well worth reading and think about, I also found it =
somewhat hard to read, most of this probably depends on my lack of =
expertise in the area.

However:

- I would consider doing a English language review, I don't think there
   is anything wrong, but the language is sometimes a bit heavy.
   Sometimes the choice of word could be discussed, in a specification
   I would rather expect "advantage" rather than "merit".
=E3=80=90Aijun Wang=E3=80=91: Have done some changes. We are also =
seeking one Native English speaker to polish it again. =20

- I'd like to see exactly which specification that has been tested early
   in the document, preferably in the Introduction.
=E3=80=90Aijun Wang=E3=80=91: Add some sentences for the application of =
existing technologies.

=E3=80=90Aijun Wang=E3=80=91: Done

- Abbreviations
   The RFC Editor Abbreviations list
   (https://www.rfc-editor.org/materials/abbrev.expansion.txt)
   gives a good idea on the rules that applies to abbreviations in RFCs.
   The basic rule is that an abbreviation is expanded the first time
   it is used.
   In this document there are abbreviations, for example in figures, =
that
   is not expanded, e.g. CR, SR, BRAS and IDC

  - I also have a small concern about listing "alternative" technologies
    (MPLS-TE, SR and DETNET) in the introduction, it is hard to come =
away
    without the impression that these technologies are seen as
    insufficient.
    Admittedly they do not solve the problem that CCDR solves, but they
    are well suited to solve the problem they were designed for.
=E3=80=90Aijun Wang=E3=80=91: Have done some changes. Point out mainly =
that the alternative technologies are not suitable for the Native IP =
scenarios that described in this draft. This is the main motivation for =
us to introduce the solution that described in =
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-teas-pce-native-ip/ and =
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-pce-pcep-extension-native-ip/=

Nits:

I'm unclear about nits vs. minor concerns for this document, and listed =
everything as minor concerns.

/Loa

PS
I'm sorry that this review has been delayed.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Traffic Engineering Architecture and Signaling WG of the IETF.

        Title : Scenarios and Simulation Results of PCE in Native IP Network
        Authors         : Aijun Wang
                          Xiaohong Huang
                          Caixia Kou

	Pages           : 14
	Date            : 2019-08-29

Abstract:
   Requirements for providing the End to End(E2E) performance assurance
   are emerging within the service provider network. While there are
   various technology solutions, there is no one solution which can
   fulfill these requirements for a native IP network. One universal
   (E2E) solution which can cover both intra-domain and inter-domain
   scenarios is needed.

   One feasible E2E traffic engineering solution is the use of a Path
   Computation Elements (PCE) in a native IP network. This document
   describes various complex scenarios and simulation results when
   applying a PCE in a native IP network. This solution, referred to as
   Centralized Control Dynamic Routing (CCDR), integrates the advantage
   of using distributed protocols and the power of a centralized control
   technology.

The IESG has received a request from the Traffic Engineering Architecture and
Signaling WG (teas) to consider the following document: - 'Scenarios and
Simulation Results of PCE in Native IP Network'
  <draft-ietf-teas-native-ip-scenarios-08.txt> as Informational RFC

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits final
comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2019-09-13. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the beginning of
the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

   Requirements for providing the End to End(E2E) performance assurance
   are emerging within the service provider network. While there are
   various technology solutions, there is no one solution which can
   fulfill these requirements for a native IP network. One universal
   (E2E) solution which can cover both intra-domain and inter-domain
   scenarios is needed.

   One feasible E2E traffic engineering solution is the use of a Path
   Computation Elements (PCE) in a native IP network. This document
   describes various complex scenarios and simulation results when
   applying a PCE in a native IP network. This solution, referred to as
   Centralized Control Dynamic Routing (CCDR), integrates the advantage
   of using distributed protocols and the power of a centralized control
   technology.
