The Multiparty Multimedia Session Control (MMUSIC) WG
has completed IETF Last Call on a document related to TLS
called :

Connection-Oriented Media Transport over the TLS
Protocol in the Session Descriptoin Protocol (SDP)
  draft-ietf-mmusic-comedia-tls-05.txt

comedia stands for connected media

We (Sec ADs, TSV ADs) realized we should have the TLS WG
give a quick review of the document, since there hasn't
been a look by this working group, though there
have been reviews by security experts with some TLS
expertise.

This document is a dependency for three others, and
it is being reviewed by the IESG on Thursday. In the
busy-ness of the holidays I wrote this message on Dec
26th, but did not notice when an SMTP hiccup caused the
email not to go before I went with my family for some
email-free holiday (just back). If it's possible for
someone give the draft a read this week despite the short
notice, that would be appreciated.

Allison

Review of draft-ietf-mmusic-comedia-tls-05

SUMMARY
This draft describes how to use SDP to describe TLS
connection-oriented media sessions. The major new thing is putting
certificate fingerprints in the SDP m-line so that as long as you have
signalling integrity you can prevent MITM attacks without 3rd party
certificates. This draft seems like a good idea and the
implementation seems basically solid, modulo the comments below.

S 5:
I agree that it's fine to use the same hash as was used to
generate the certificate, but I think you need to explain
why it's OK here or in the security considerations section.
The key point is that the same security properties are required
of the hash here as in the certificate signature.

S 6.1:
This text seems to imply that you need to have a valid identity
in the certificate even if it's self-signed and used with a
fingerprint. From a security perspective, that doesn't really
add any value, since it's the fingerprint, not the identity,
that provides security.

S 6.2:

certificate does not match the provided fingerprint, or, if there was
no fingerprint, the certificate identity is incorrect, the server
endpoint MUST either notify the user or terminate the media
connection with a bad certificate error.

I assume you mean "bad_certificate" here. Also, why are you
generating that if no fingerprint is provided? That's not a
TLS-level error, it's an error at the upper layer protocol. You
shouldn't even be negotiating TLS if there's no fingerprint.

Note that when the offer/answer model is being used, it is possible
for a media connection to outrace the answer back to the offerer.
Thus, if the offerer has offered a 'setup:passive' or 'setup:actpass'
role, it MUST (as specified in the Connection-Oriented Media
specification [2]) begin listening for an incoming connection as soon
as it sends its offer. However, because its peer's media connection
may outrace its answer, it MUST NOT definitively accept the peer's
certificate until it has received and processed the SDP answer.

What does "definitively accept" mean here. What I would assume would
be that you would let the TLS handshake complete but then defer
some other action till you had the fingrerprint. But what action?

Understood. I just think you need to explain this in the ID :)

Sorry, I still don't understand how this requires having a valid
identity. If you're doing ssh doesn't that imply that the cert
isn't signed by a valid signer, in which case whatever's in
the cert DN or subjectAltName is pretty meaningless, right?

I don't see anywhere in RFC 2246 which restricts you from sending
bad_certificate outside the handshake, so I think you would probably
use that alert.

Well, as far as TLS goes, we only use integer code points, so this
wouldn't buy us anything, but speaking personally I think this
would be a good idea.

Ekr,

I somehow missed Jonathan's original question about this. I'll support
making this registry broad-based as long as we don't have to troubleshoot
it a lot from the security side. Essentially this is going to be
an IANA space for SDP-folk determined names of the algorithms
from RFCs 3280 and 4055 (and later, any RFCs which update 4055).

The reason I don't want to use the broad registry if it entails
debugging is that it's not very likely to be in the consciousness of
future security developers, not being integrated into a reference
security RFC, and there's not much precedent (if any) for using
the same registry for multiple protocols.

OK, well I don't have a strong feeling either way, so this is
probably a question for SAAG or the SEC ADs.

Especially in the case where a fingerprint is present I think that the
requirements for identity matching would introduce usability problems
with no security benefit. So I strongly argue for relaxing the
identity checking in the case where a fingerprint is available in an
integrity protected SDP exchange.

In the case where the cert is being matched against a trust anchor
through the process described in RFC 3280, the identity constraints
given in this document (or similar constraints) are absolutely
essential.

In the case where you are doing ssh-style leap of faith you do need to
decide what identity you are binding the leap of faith entry to in
your cache. In that case the identity requirements may be helpful but
are not strict security requirements.

If you are going to support ssh-style leap of faith you do need to be
careful not to make rekeying/changing a cert harder than it needs to
be. In particular, the user should not get a warning because there is
a leap of faith cache entry with a different certificate in it and a
valid fingerprint is presented in an integrity protected SDP session.
I'm not sure updating the cache entry would be good in that case, but
presenting a warning to the user because the cert changed would
definitely be a bad idea because it would discourage rekeying.

Now you do need to present the warning in the case where the SDP
session is not integrity protected.

Hi Amir,

Thanks for the review and your support. The latest draft is -06 and can
be found at
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-salowey-tls-ticket-06.txt.
I'm forwarding your comments to the TLS list where the this draft has
been discussed and to the IESG who are currently evaluating the document
for publication as an RFC. Comments are included below.

Thanks,

Joe

>=20

[Joe] The client does not know the expiry time of the ticket, this is
consistent with current operation of TLS session resumption. If the
server does not accept the ticket then the conversation falls back to
the full handshake. I think adding expiration times would complicate
the client implementation. We currently mention longer life tickets in
the introduction, but we do not discuss ticket lifetime much outside
this. =20

>=20

[Joe] Yes, it is probably worthwhile to add a section in the security
considerations on this. I agree that it probably isn't worth the
complexity to try to address this at this point.=20

>=20

[Joe] The TLS spec indicates that the Finished message must follow the
Change Cipher Spec message so we thought it would be more of a deviation
from the existing TLS standard and TLS implementations. It was also in
line with what was provided in [CSSC].=20

>=20

[Joe] This comment has come up before. The specification is not intended
to provide interoperability between different server implementations.
This would require a lot more specification and complexity. The sample
ticket is included as a reasonable example that implementers can use
instead of trying to invent their own. The ticket is issued by the
server and understood by the server. Adding more structure to the ticket
will tempt clients into interpreting the ticket which will have negative
impacts on interoperability. If deployment experience shows that
interoperability between different servers is useful and achievable
then we can look at this again.=20

Description of Working Group:

The TLS Working Group was established in 1996 to standardize a
'transport layer' security protocol. The working group began with SSL
version 3.0. The TLS Working Group has completed a series of
specifications that describe the Transport Layer Security protocol
versions 1.0 and 1.1, extensions to the protocol, and new
ciphersuites to be used with TLS.

The primary goal of the WG is to publish a revision of TLS, version 1.2,
that removes the protocol's dependency on the MD5 and SHA-1 digest
algorithms, which have been either wholly or partially compromised by
recent research. The TLS WG will also work on new authenticated
encryption modes for TLS, including modes based on counter mode
encryption (CTR) and combined encryption/authentication modes, and
may define major new cipher suites for TLS for this purpose. In the
preparation of TLS 1.2, the WG will attempt to avoid gratuitous
changes to TLS 1.1.

Goals and Milestones:

Done Final draft for Secure Transport Layer Protocol ('STLP')
Done TLS 1.1 specification
3/2006 First draft of TLS 1.2 specification, including
              CTR mode cipher suites
3/2006 First draft of specification for cipher suites with
              combined encryption/authentication modes
12/2006 Submit specification of TLS 1.2 specification to
IESG for publication as Proposed Standard.
12/2006 Submit specification of cipher suites with
              combined encryption/authentication modes
to IESG for publication, with at least one
of these suites to be Proposed Standard.

Joe, thanks. Few comments below.

Sure. But you ignored the point I made: the hope is that tickets can be
cached for much longer than TLS session state. Therefore, ticket
lifetime should be much longer - and clients need to know when to
discard ticket. Also, ticket are sent by server and are variable length,
probably often longer than TLS session state. The TLS tickets are
comparable to HTTP cookies.

I think that adding ticket lifetime is not substantial complication. Not
including it now may lead to adding it later which will be more complex.
Of course, the lifetime field can be optional, also clients are allowed
to erase a ticket before the requests lifetime.

Ok, so we are in agreement here.

Hmmm. I'm not sure this is much of an argument.
I think privacy adovcates may consider this an insuffient reason. But
I'll leave it to them.

I submitted the draft a while ago but it got lost in the internet-drafts
mail system (possibly got caught in the spam filter :).

But finally it was resolved and the draft is now available from:

Hi,

I just had a quick look at your ID, and I have some minor comments.

In the introduction, you say that if the server doesn't understand this
extension, it will respond with a non-extended ServerHello. The server
could respond with an extended ServerHello that doesn't include this
extension; other extensions may be supported.

The UpnDomainHint field "user_principle_name" should probably be
"user_principal_name". It is correct elsewhere in the document.

Having an enum name and a struct name both be "UpnDomainHint" is
confusing. Perhaps the enum value could be "upn_domain_hint".

The UserMappingData struct only allows a single hint type. Could it be
useful to allow multiple hint types in a single session setup?

The requirement that UpnDomainHint should have at least one member
populated could also be met by separating the domain and principal hints
and allowing multiple hints in UserMappingData.

This is just from a quick reading; I haven't thought about the issues
in any more detail.

I hope this helps.

Regards,

Jan Mikkelsen

Hello,

In section 6.2.3.2. CBC block cipher:

The encrypted data length (TLSCiphertext.length) is one more than the
    sum of TLSCompressed.length, CipherSpec.hash_size, and
    padding_length.

Should this be:

    sum of CipherSpec.block_length, TLSCompressed.length,
           ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
    CipherSpec.hash_size, and padding_length.

to accommondate for the explicit IV?

Also, there is conflicting text regarding message precedence (handshake
vs. application data):

In section 6.2.1. Fragmentation:

Note: Data of different TLS Record layer content types MAY be
interleaved. Application data is generally of higher precedence

records may be held if application data is pending. However,

and in 7.4.1.1. Hello request:

with a no_renegotiation alert. Since handshake messages are
                                             ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
intended to have transmission precedence over application data,
        ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
it is expected that the negotiation will begin before no more
than a few records are received from the client. If the server

Which text is correct? In RFC 2246, the text is

interleaved. Application data is generally of lower precedence
for transmission than other content types.

and text to the same effect is also in section 7.4.1.1 of RFC2246.

P.S: with regard to the recent charter changes, is there going to be any
kind of RFC of TLS 1.1?

I too had pointed this out in an earlier mail, but got no replies. It
seems in a previous thread in this list Eric had replied to someone
posing a similar query. He had actually mentioned data had lower
precedence (similar to what's in tls1.0 & the earlier tls1.1_drafts.

So, it's a bit confusing. tls1.1 is in the rfc editor queue, so is that
why no clarifications are coming in (are these going to be addressed in
tls 1.2?)

Thank you, Eric.

Any take on my other question about the TLSCipherText.length?

Subject: Re: [TLS] The TLS User Mapping Extension draft is available

Hi,

I just had a quick look at your ID, and I have some minor comments.

In the introduction, you say that if the server doesn't understand this=20
extension, it will respond with a non-extended ServerHello. The server=20
could respond with an extended ServerHello that doesn't include this=20
extension; other extensions may be supported.

[Stefan] Agree. Editorial issue that will be fixed in next draft.

The UpnDomainHint field "user_principle_name" should probably be=20
"user_principal_name". It is correct elsewhere in the document.

[Stefan] This is an error that has survived through the development
process of this extension. It will be corrected.

Having an enum name and a struct name both be "UpnDomainHint" is=20
confusing. Perhaps the enum value could be "upn_domain_hint".

[Stefan] Agree, this will be fixed in the next draft.

The UserMappingData struct only allows a single hint type. Could it be=20
useful to allow multiple hint types in a single session setup?

[Stefan] This is a tricky issue but I agree that it could be useful. On
one hand we want to limit the complexity if decisions the server has to
make upon receiving a hint and that complexity increases if multiple
hints are allowed. On the other hand, if a new version of a hint is
created in the future then it would be very hard to manage a transition
with legacy servers and clients if you can't send both hint types in a
single handshake. We will look into this and probably provide a solution
for providing multiple hints.=20

The requirement that UpnDomainHint should have at least one member=20
populated could also be met by separating the domain and principal hints

and allowing multiple hints in UserMappingData.

[Stefan] We definitely don't want to allow multiple hints of the same
type. Even though you probably could figure out a use case for this, it
is not worth the extra complexity. I suggest that any such needs will
have to be addressed in definition of future hints, if there is a need
for it. In such case a new hint could have a more comprehensive
structure.

This is just from a quick reading; I haven't thought about the issues=20
in any more detail.

I hope this helps.

[Stefan] It certainly does. Thanks.
Regards,

Jan Mikkelsen

The authors believe that draft-ietf-tls-openpgp-keys-08 is
ready for submission to the IESG as an Experimental RFC.
I'd like to get two volunteers to review it in the next

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Transport Layer Security Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Using OpenPGP keys for TLS authentication
	Author(s)	: N. Mavroyanopoulos
	Filename	: draft-ietf-tls-openpgp-keys-08.txt
	Pages : 14
	Date : 2006-1-17

This memo proposes extensions to the TLS protocol to support the
OpenPGP trust model and keys. The extensions discussed here include
a certificate type negotiation mechanism, and the required
modifications to the TLS Handshake Protocol.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-tls-openpgp-keys-08.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to

to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:

In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-tls-openpgp-keys-08.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I am student of MSc High Speed Network and Distributed System at Oxford=

The IESG has approved the following document:

- 'ECC Cipher Suites for TLS '
   <draft-ietf-tls-ecc-12.txt> as an Informational RFC

This document is the product of the Transport Layer Security Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Russ Housley and Sam Hartman.

A URL of this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-tls-ecc-12.txt

Technical Summary

This document adds Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) cipher suites to
TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1. These cipher suites have some technical
advantages over the currently defined RSA and DH/DSS cipher suites in
terms of key size and performance. This document does not entail any
changes to the TLS base specification.

Working Group Summary

The WG was unable to achieve rough consensus on advancing this
document to Proposed Standard, due to concerns about IPR and some
concerns about complexity. The WG was able to achieve rough consensus
on advancing this document to Informational (following failure to
achieve consensus on standards track). Some concerns about complexity
(in particular curve negotiation) remain, but the overall feeling in
the WG was that this document was ready for publication as an
  Informational RFC.

Protocol Quality

This document was reviewed by Russ Housley for the IESG.

"The SessionTicket handshake message has been assigned the number
TBD2. The definition of the SessionTicket handshake message is given
at the end of this section. The message contains
ticket_lifetime_hint which is a hint of the ticket's lifetime in
seconds as a 32 bit unsigned integer in network byte order. A value
of zero is reserved to indicate that the lifetime of the ticket is
unspecified. A client MAY delete the ticket when the time expires.
A server MAY treat a ticket as valid for a shorter or longer period
of time than what is stated in the ticket_lifetime_hint. The client
MAY delete the ticket before the lifetime has elapsed.

What about hop-by-hop authenticated with each hop integrity protected.
IMHO in many environments, this presents acceptable man-in-the-middle
risk. I think that it may present significantly easier to deal with
usability issues so I think it should at least be allowed if not
encouraged.

Do you have explicit language that a self-signed cert cache must not

Basically, what I never want to happen is:

* you get a self signed cert in a previous session

* In the current session you have end-to-end integrity and get
errors/warnings because you are not getting the same cert you did in
  that previous session.
