A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Internet Open Trading Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Requirements for XML Messaging Version 1.0 Release 00
	Author(s)	: D. Burdett
	Filename	: draft-ietf-trade-xmlmsg-requirements-00.txt
	Pages : 60
	Date : 24-Jan-00

This specification contains requirements for a generic approach to
the reliable, resilient, secure, tamper resistant, authenticated
exchange of XML or other electronic documents over insecure transport
mechanisms.
The specification provides the requirements and framework for a set
of related specifications on XML Messaging covering:
o Requirements for XML Messaging (this paper)
o Common XML Message Elements
o Document Exchange and Transactions
o Reliable Messaging
o Secure Messaging
o Document Choreography Definitions
o Common Document Exchanges
o Transport Protocol Supplements
Although much work has been carried out on the other parts of the XML
Messaging specification described above, they are sill in development

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-trade-xmlmsg-requirements-00.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-trade-xmlmsg-requirements-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-trade-xmlmsg-requirements-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hitachi has been developing a software based on IOTP 1.0
and some additional specifications for an order packaged
content, a pay note packaged content and server-to-server
communication, consisting of servers (Merchant, Payment
Handler and Delivery Handler) and a client in SMILE
project funded by MITI.

It will support purchase transaction using SET, SECE(debit),
NTT Super Cash and Mondex.
Actural trial of SMILE project is planned from March to
the end of August in 2000.

RE: IOTP Implementations - Who's on First? At Brokat Infosystems (more exactly, at MeTechnology - a
Brokat company,
we have implemented an IOTP system as part of a research project.

The Merchant and the Payment Handler are based on Twister, Brokat's
e-services platform (http://www.brokat.com/us/twister/index.html).

The wallet is a Java applet, with a highly customizable Swing-based user interface.
It can be started by the shop either by MIME-type or embedded in a HTML page.
The wallet does address and payment instrument management; transactions are stored
in a transaction log and can be examined or resumed any time later. The wallet
is multi-user, user profiles and transactions are stored encrypted on the hard disk.

For a start, we implemented Virtual Customer Card payments (a prepaid scheme).

The system uses IOTP 1.0 messages, but we also defined Server-to-Server messages
so that the Payment Handler can notify the Merchant about the progress of the payment.
These messages can be used as an alternative to the explicit (Consumer-initiated) delivery
requests.

If you are interested in further details, please write.

  Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

I've had a request to bundle up the responses I received and forward them
to the list. I won't do that. I won't presume to know that what someone
sends me individually can be repeated on the open list.

The intent is that individuals will respond *on the list*.

These is one point I will draw from viewing several items. IOTP uses
the concept of Roles to define 'who does what' during a transaction.
However, nothing limits these roles to being occupied only for a
B2C transaction. B2B uses the same roles, so - IOTP could certainly
be used as part of B2B commerce solution. Don't think that just because
you are *not* doing B2C that we aren't interested in what you might
  have to say.

In addition - if you wish to add your voice to that of the
interested audience, that too is welcome.

I just want to let everyone know that I've submitted the first draft of a
"requirements" paper for XML Messaging to the Internet drafts editor. I
guess this is likely to be published sometime early next week.

The objective of XML Messaging as stated in the paper to provide a "generic
approach to the reliable, resilient, secure, tamper resistant, authenticated
exchange of XML or other electronic documents over insecure, unreliable
transport mechanisms".

In thinking about XML Messaging I can see significant benefit in splitting
the specification up into several different parts. So far I have identified
the following in addition to a "requirements" specification:
*	Common XML Message Elements
*	Document Exchange and Transactions
*	Reliable Messaging
*	Secure Messaging
*	Document Choreography Definitions
*	Common Document Exchanges
*	Transport Protocol Supplements

I think that the more we people we can get working on these the better.

Finally this is a **first** draft and realize that there is a **lot** of
discussion and thought required to make an XML Messaging standard real.

I look forward to working with you all.

Regards

David

At some point, those of working on IOTP will need to
consider testing interoperability. Right now, I know of only
2 (or maybe 3) groups actively working on IOTP components.

For those who are doing so in anything remotely resembling
a corporate environment, it helps immensely if we can say,
with some evidence, how many different groups are involved.

I realize that some people will want to be circumspect about
their plans. However, we can all help each other if we can
speak up to indicate that some implementation work is
planned or underway.

Longer term, if IOTP is to move towards an IETF standard,
we would have to demonstrate interoperability of the
independent implementations. We might as well get started
on thinking about this, too.

To get this started - from my point of view:

Royal Bank (of Canada) has a production IOTP implementation
of Withdrawal and Deposit of Mondex value. We built both an
IOTP server and a Windows client. It is in use, in
production, by customers of the bank.

Working Group members should be aware that I am no longer with IBM and
my IBM email address does not work. I expect to be starting next week
with Motorola in Mansfield, Massahcusetts, and relocating to
