The following errata report has been submitted for RFC4960,
"Stream Control Transmission Protocol".

--------------------------------------
You may review the report below and at:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/errata_search.php?rfc=4960&eid=3423

--------------------------------------
Type: Technical
Reported by: Pontus Andersson <epontan@gmail.com>

Section: B

Original Text
-------------
   unsigned long
generate_crc32c(unsigned char *buffer, unsigned int length)
   {
     unsigned int i;
     unsigned long crc32 = ~0L;

Corrected Text
--------------
   unsigned long
generate_crc32c(unsigned char *buffer, unsigned int length)
   {
     unsigned int i;
     unsigned long crc32 = 0xffffffffL;

Notes
-----
The remainder register (crc32) should be initialized to 0xffffffffL rather than ~0L, for correct operation on platforms where unisigned long is longer than 32 bits. I.e., 64-bit platforms.

I would actually prefer to make use of uint32_t as the type of crc32. At =
least this
is what we do in the FreeBSD implementation and that runs fine on all =
architectures.

Joe,

Can you write down your rationale for removing the distinction
between system & user ports?

I don't see why ceasing to allocate system ports will help. It's not
clear whether you are trying to remove the false sense of security
that system ports purport to offer, or whether you are trying to
remove the higher bar to IANA allocation, both, neither, or what.
There's too little written in the draft, on the list and around the
bullets in your presentation of the draft to guess fully what you're
driving at.

Not a criticism - we all have limited time to write what splurges out
of our minds - I'm just trying to understand.

Cheers

Bob

I support the notion of combining system and user for the simple reason
that there is no technical difference between the two, there is no
meaningful additional security offered by system. The distinction dates
back to the notion that non-privileged users couldn't open a port below
1024 and we knew all Internet hosts by name.

Elliot,

I'm not saying I don't support removing the distinction in meaning
(for the false sense of security reasons). I'm just saying there's
nothing written about why it helps to achieve this if IANA no longer
allocate ports under 1024.

I can't work out the reasoning for this, but I'm sure Joe has got
one. What's written so far doesn't help anyone understand unless they
already understand.

This was discussed at several IETFs before this doc was accepted as a WG
item, so I thought there was context. The doc does need expanding on
this, and I will do so in the next revision.

My view is that:

- the distinction has evolved to become meaningless, and thus treating
any port as more trusted because of its assigned range is a bad idea (as
Eliot points out above). Yes, there are plenty of systems that do
continue to treat the two ranges as different, but enough others that
don't that it seems a bad idea to continue to support the difference as
meaningful.

Which is why I propose the following as an overall goal:

The range 0...49151 will be known as Assigned ports.

Port assignments will no longer distinguish between 'user',
'system', 'well-known', and 'registered' subranges of Assigned
	ports.

If we do deprecate the difference between the ranges, we need to decide
how to move forward.

First, regardless of how we move forward, IMO:

Assigned ports should use the procedures from RFC 2780
	that apply to User ports.

There are two ways forward, given that goal (in the order of my preference):

a) this document can officially deprecate the distinction between User
and System ports by declaring that IANA should cease further assignments
from the System range

b) this document can suggest that users should not bother requesting
system ports

c) this document can officially deprecate the distinction between User
and System ports by merging the two and letting users pick any available
port from the Assigned range

Of these options, I think (c) creates a "land rush" in the System space,
and we don't have enough understanding of the impact on legacy protocols.

(a) is the safest, since it merely requires that new services be
designed in a way that assumes that they could be run by any user on any
system - which, these days, seems like a reasonable recommendation.

(b) is a way to circumvent the issue without deprecating the User/System
distinction, and IMO just continues to ignore the current situation

Thoughts?

Joe

Hi all,

We've submitted a new draft discussing PIE (Proportional Integral
controller Enhanced) AQM scheme. Please find the draft URL and submission
details below.

We are working with Cisco's legal team to have the PIE pseudo-code and
implementations (ns-2, Linux) publicly available. We should have a pointer
to these items in couple of weeks.

Best,
Preethi (on behalf of all authors).

Hello,

=20

We have just submitted the draft named Maximum Tolerable Delays when =
using Tunneling Compressed Multiplexed Traffic Flows: =
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-suznjevic-tsvwg-mtd-tcmtf/

=20

It is an extension of tcmtf =
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-saldana-tsvwg-tcmtf/. Since a =
specific list for tcmtf exists (tcmtf@ietf.org), the idea is to discuss =
it there.

=20

The draft contains recommendations for TCMTF multiplexing period for =
different real-time services. In order to prevent QoE degradation of =
real-time services using TCMTF, a policy defining a multiplexing period =
can be employed. Values of maximum tolerable delays presented in the =
draft form the base of such policy. The recommendations are presented =
for real-time network services in which TCTMF bandwidth optimization is =
applicable (i.e., services which have low payload to header size ratio =
which results in high protocol overhead).

=20

Your feedback will be welcome. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mirko Suznjevic

Hi,

I do hope we will get some reviews from TSVWG. But I would like to point
out that the target is Standards Track.

I also would recommend that you take a look at the document implementing
the change in the IPv6 Specification also after having reviewed
draft-ietf-6man-udpzero-08:

The IESG has received a request from the IPv6 Maintenance WG (6man) to
consider the following document:
- 'IPv6 and UDP Checksums for Tunneled Packets'
  <draft-ietf-6man-udpchecksums-06.txt> as Proposed Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2012-12-25. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the
beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

This document provides an update of the Internet Protocol version 6
(IPv6) specification (RFC2460) to improve the performance in the use
case when a tunnel protocol uses UDP with IPv6 to tunnel packets.
The performance improvement is obtained by relaxing the IPv6 UDP
checksum requirement for suitable tunneling protocol where header
information is protected on the "inner" packet being carried. This
relaxation removes the overhead associated with the computation of
UDP checksums on IPv6 packets used to carry tunnel protocols. The
specification describes how the IPv6 UDP checksum requirement can be
relaxed for the situation where the encapsulated packet itself
contains a checksum. The limitations and risks of this approach are
described, and restrictions specified on the use of the method.

The file can be obtained via
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-6man-udpchecksums/

IESG discussion can be tracked via
http://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-6man-udpchecksums/ballot/

No IPR declarations have been submitted directly on this I-D.

This email starts a WG call for adoption for 2 potential TSVWG work items
proposing minor extensions to SCTP: This adoption call will conclude 3rd
January 2013.

1) SCTP/DTLS

The authors of "draft-tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-dtls-encaps-01" request that this
is adopted as TSVWG item.

The IETF-85 meeting indicated some WG support for this, so we are now
ready to make a formal decision and this email is to allow people to
confirm that there is sufficient energy to complete this work in TSVWG.

2) SCTP SACK Immediately

The authors of "draft-tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-sack-immediately" request that
this is adopted as TSVWG item.

This draft was discussed at a number of previous IETFs and the IETF-85
meeting indicated some WG support for this, so we are now ready to make a
formal decision and this email is to allow people to confirm that there is
sufficient energy to complete this work in TSVWG.

PLEASE send an email to this list:

* if you think adopting either/both of these documents in TSVWG is a good
or bad idea.

* if you have implemented or plan to implement these extensions.

* Please also indicate if you are willing to REVIEW either/both documents
during its development.

Best wishes,

Gorry, David and James.
(TSVWG Co-Chairs)

TSVWG.

The chairs plan to submit the draft draft-ietf-tsvwg-byte-pkt-congest-09
for publication after completing revision following WGLC. A copy of the
proposed write-up is enclosed below.

Gorry, David & James
TSVWG Co-Chairs

------
TSVWG: Byte and Packet Congestion Notification

As required by RFC 4858, this is the current template for the Document
Shepherd Write-Up.

Changes are expected over time. This version is dated 24 February 2012.

(1) What type of RFC is being requested (BCP, Proposed Standard,
Internet Standard, Informational, Experimental, or Historic)? Why
is this the proper type of RFC? Is this type of RFC indicated in the
title page header?
This document is intended as BCP. (This was discussed at IETF-81 and that
the status changed from Informational to BCP, because the draft provides
guidance to implementors and people configuring routers and hosts).

(2) The IESG approval announcement includes a Document Announcement
Write-Up. Please provide such a Document Announcement Write-Up. Recent
examples can be found in the "Action" announcements for approved
documents. The approval announcement contains the following sections:
Technical Summary
This document provides recommendations of best current practice for
dropping or marking packets using active queue management (AQM) such
as random early detection (RED) or pre-congestion notification (PCN).
We give three strong recommendations: (1) packet size should be taken
into account when transports read and respond to congestion
indications, (2) packet size should not be taken into account when
network equipment creates congestion signals (marking, dropping), and
therefore (3) the byte-mode packet drop variant of the RED AQM
algorithm that drops fewer small packets should not be used. This
memo updates RFC 2309 to deprecate deliberate preferential treatment
of small packets in AQM algorithms.

Working Group Summary
There was consensus to publish this as a WG document and agreement at
IETF-82 that the document was now complete. Since then there have been a
number of revisions to address WG feedback.

Document Quality

Annexe A summarises a survey by the original authors showing deployment of
the techniques by router vendors. The recommendations are thought to be in
line with that of IETF groups, such as TSVWG, TCPM, PCN, and are
considered good advice for use in the general Internet.

Personnel Who is the Document Shepherd? Who is the Responsible Area Director?
I am the document shepherd, G Fairhurst.

(3) Briefly describe the review of this document that was performed by
the Document Shepherd. If this version of the document is not ready
for publication, please explain why the document is being forwarded to
the IESG.
The document was presented at IEWTF-82 (Taipei), with a request for WGLC.
WGLC concluded with some discussion and suggested changes on Friday 30th
March 2012. The changes were discussed on the list, and have been
implemented in a revised draft.

(4) Does the document Shepherd have any concerns about the depth or
breadth of the reviews that have been performed?
No - the original (individual) draft had a lot of background material,
much of this has been condensed or removed, resulting in a shorter
document.

(5) Do portions of the document need review from a particular or from
broader perspective, e.g., security, operational complexity, AAA, DNS,
DHCP, XML, or internationalization? If so, describe the review that
took place.

No.

(6) Describe any specific concerns or issues that the Document Shepherd
has with this document that the Responsible Area Director and/or the
IESG should be aware of? For example, perhaps he or she is uncomfortable
with certain parts of the document, or has concerns whether there really
is a need for it. In any event, if the WG has discussed those issues and
has indicated that it still wishes to advance the document, detail those
concerns here.

None.

(7) Has each author confirmed that any and all appropriate IPR
disclosures required for full conformance with the provisions of BCP 78
and BCP 79 have already been filed. If not, explain why.
Yes.

(8) Has an IPR disclosure been filed that references this document?
If so, summarize any WG discussion and conclusion regarding the IPR
disclosures.
No IPR disclosures have been submitted directly on
draft-ietf-tsvwg-byte-pkt-congest.

(9) How solid is the WG consensus behind this document? Does it represent
the strong concurrence of a few individuals, with others
being silent, or does the WG as a whole understand and agree with it?
The document has WG support and there is consensus to publish.

(10) Has anyone threatened an appeal or otherwise indicated extreme
discontent? If so, please summarise the areas of conflict in separate
email messages to the Responsible Area Director. (It should be in a
separate email because this questionnaire is publicly available.)

Some people commented on the size of the document.

(11) Identify any ID nits the Document Shepherd has found in this
document. (See http://www.ietf.org/tools/idnits/ and the Internet-Drafts
Checklist). Boilerplate checks are not enough; this check needs to be
thorough.
No.

(12) Describe how the document meets any required formal review
criteria, such as the MIB Doctor, media type, and URI type reviews.
Not applicable.

(13) Have all references within this document been identified as
either normative or informative?
Yes.

(14) Are there normative references to documents that are not ready for
advancement or are otherwise in an unclear state? If such normative
references exist, what is the plan for their completion?
No.

(15) Are there downward normative references references (see RFC 3967)?
If so, list these downward references to support the Area Director in the
Last Call procedure.
No.

(16) Will publication of this document change the status of any
existing RFCs? Are those RFCs listed on the title page header, listed
in the abstract, and discussed in the introduction? If the RFCs are not
listed in the Abstract and Introduction, explain why, and point to the
part of the document where the relationship of this document to the
other RFCs is discussed. If this information is not in the document,
explain why the WG considers it unnecessary.
One update is listed, RFC 2309, informational - replaced by this BCP.
It deprecates deliberate preferential treatment of small packets in AQM
algorithms.

(17) Describe the Document Shepherd's review of the IANA considerations
section, especially with regard to its consistency with the body of the
document. Confirm that all protocol extensions that the document makes
are associated with the appropriate reservations in IANA registries.
Confirm that any referenced IANA registries have been clearly
identified. Confirm that newly created IANA registries include a
detailed specification of the initial contents for the registry, that
allocations procedures for future registrations are defined, and a
reasonable name for the new registry has been suggested (see RFC 5226).
Not applicable.

(18) List any new IANA registries that require Expert Review for future
allocations. Provide any public guidance that the IESG would find
useful in selecting the IANA Experts for these new registries.
None.

(19) Describe reviews and automated checks performed by the Document
Shepherd to validate sections of the document written in a formal
language, such as XML code, BNF rules, MIB definitions, etc.
Not applicable.

Hi all. I have read draft-ietf-6man-udpchecksums-06.txt. I support it.

Only these comments (I hope they are useful):

- Although the difference between "tunneling packet" and "tunneled =
packet"
is clear, I think something similar could be done when talking about
"tunneling protocols". The document sometimes talks about "tunnel =
protocols"
and other times about "tunneling protocols". Perhaps the term could be
unified.

Sentences which could be improved:

- " These different examples each help to significantly reduce the
likelihood that a corrupted inner tunneled packet is finally delivered =
to a
protocol listener that can be affected by the packet." Sounds very
complicated, IMHO.

- "similar effects that reduce the likelihood that an mis-delivered =
packet
are delivered." Could say " similar effects that reduce the likelihood =
that
a mis-delivered packet is delivered."

- " A corruption will commonly only effect the single packet, not
established protocol state." Could say "A corruption will commonly =
affect a
single packet, not the established protocol state."

- " Tunnel protocols encapsulating IP this will generally be safe," =
could
say "In tunnel protocols encapsulating IP, this will generally be safe,"

A small typo:

- "Corruption of the address information in an encapsulating packets," =
could
say " Corruption of the address information in an encapsulating packet"

Best regards,

Jose Saldana

Michael:

I agree! But as to the actual Errata.. this is correct as
well. It should be 0xffffffff not 0.

The use of uint32_t is much better since it avoids the issues =
surrounding
int's and longs (for those in the editors office, a long on a 32 bit =
machine is
a 32 bit int, a long on a 64 bit machine is a 64 bit number .. of course =
I speak
of Unix type O/S's.. other O/S's may not have this issue, but I think =
clarity

I think both draft-tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-dtls-encaps and
draft-tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-sack-immediately should be made working-group
items. They
are required and useful (respectively) for the (rtcweb) DataChannels work
we're
doing.

Dear Gorry,

I fully support the adoption of both documents in TSVWG. Both are very =
useful=20
and, in particular, I already make use of the draft-tuexen-tsvwg-sctp-s=
ack-
immediately extension in my SCTP setups (as part of the NorNet project,=
 see=20
also http://www.nntb.no/).

Of course, I am also willing to review both documents during their=20
development.

Hi Gorry,

1)
This draft is important in the context of the RTCWeb/WebRTC discussion.=20
If the RTCWeb/WebRTC solution comes up with SCTP and DTLS we need an agreem=
ent here.=20
The WG should discuss about the best way, I would like to see the ID in the=
 WG.=20
We (especially Sebastian) implement the current discussed RTCWeb stack in t=
he Omnet++/Inet Environment.=20

2)
For my feeling the motivation for this kind of extension is strong enough.
Furthermore I see no drawbacks, but the approach provides a possible improv=
ement without changing the nature of the protocol.
That is why I support the adoption of this draft.

Martin

Dear Gorry, David and James,

Ericsson is interested and support the adoption of both documents in tsvwg.

We are interested to sctp-sack-immediately, but we have not implemented
it yet
but we plan to do it in the near future and also follow up tsvwg
activities on it.

We are also interested in sctp-dtls-encaps-01, but not sure about the
implementation plan

Dear Gorry

In my opinion the documents are very important. sctp-dtls-encaps is =
needed for rtcweb and sctp-sack-immediately shortens the time for a dtls =
handshake significantly.
I am willing to review the documents.

Best wishes

Irene

To provide some context ... during the Atlanta IETF, it
became clear that having this document in RTCWEB (where
it was a WG draft) was confusing on at least 2 counts:

(1) TSVWG is the place in the IETF where we should be
    making any recommendations about use of DiffServ;
it would get crazy if every WG had its own set of
    guidance about this.

(2) It seemed to be advocating using multiple 6-tuples
(address pairs, port pairs, protocol, and DSCP) that
differ only in their DSCP, for distinguishing the
QoS desires of individual packets within an RTCWEB
flow that's muxing potentially lots of different
things (voice, video, bulk, and interactive data)
    with different QoS desires.

This was potentially not going to interact well
with things we have been talking about in RMCAT,
    like allocating congestion responses between
elastic and inelastic sub-flows. If those sub-
flows are on separate 6-tuples, this may not
make any sense, as they'd be seeing different
    queues within the network.

So, in summary, TSVWG is the right place to talk about
this draft, though I'm not sure it's technically a very
good idea, myself, given other work being done in the
IETF currently.

Wes,

thanks. (2) may advocate starting with a problem statement and a framework =

for RTCWeb. I'd support that.

Dear Med,

after having read RFC5160, I'm happy that you agree that an
interconnection class and codepoint scheme and RFC5160
complement each other. I'll add a reference, when I update
my draft.

I may come back with questions on some details, but there's
one point which I'd like to discuss.

Your terminology is quite clear about

   Local-QoS-Class (l-QC)

A QoS transfer capability across a single domain, characterized by
a set of QoS performance parameters denoted by (D, J, L). From a
Diffserv [RFC2475] perspective, an l-QC is an occurrence of a Per
   Domain Behavior (PDB) [RFC3086].

>From what I know, a PDB may be optimised for cetrtain kinds of traffic:
pure VoIP RTP or TCP, to give examples. Traffic conditioning and
scheduling may be optimised on the recommended usage of a class. If
that's the case, then first there's the PDB or class specification on
a level closer to transport or application and then there's a
description by SLA properties.

Taking it the other way around: by just looking at SLA properties
D, J, L and a PDB name (which may not be standardised),
interconnection QoS may not always work as desired. Especially
with AF classes.

What I propose is to add some explaining text in a document we
would have to agree on (maybe my draft, could be any other). That
may be done in a way as proposed by http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3086#sect=
ion-8.

What's left for me this year is wishing merry christmas to those
celebrating and a relaxed and good start into 2013 to those
who don't

Med: FWIW, the rationale we adopted in RFC5160 is as follows:

* Network Providers are free to define their own traffic engineering polici=
es and their QoS class of services in their domains.
* Diffserv is only a means among other to achieve differentiated forwarding
* The number and the definition of QoS classes is not universal
* Network Providers are not obliged to expose their internal class of servi=
ces to external parties
* When extending some QoS classes beyond the boundaries of a given domain, =
it is required to establish contractual agreements between network provider=
s, otherwise the traffic will be handed as BE.
* These agreements will be the place where class identification is discusse=
d and agreed.
* Remarking is likely to be always enforced in both exit border router and =
entry border router: local class of services are not advertised outside the=
 domain.
* Providers need a tool to help deciding how to bind one/multiple local QoS=
classes with adjacent class of service: hence the concept of meta-QoS-Clas=
s.
* CoS identifier is not sufficient to provide QoS: additional parameters ar=
e to be agreed between network providers. Examples of these parameters are:=
constraints on the traffic (eg., tcp-friendly), network resources for the =
class / overall traffic using this class, etc.

So far I think, RFC5160 and the
>proposals of my
>draft would complement each other.

Med: Agreed. I personally see a value in standardizing a very limited set o=
f interconnection classes. In addition to the interconnection class name/id=
entifier discussion point, it is important also to have a detailed definiti=
on of the class itself (in terms of attributes, target services, traffic co=
nditions, etc.). Perhaps, try the http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3086#sectio=
n-8 ;-)?

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the Transport Area Working Group Working Grou=
p of the IETF.

Title : UDP Encapsulation of SCTP Packets
	Author(s) : Michael Tuexen
                          Randall R. Stewart
	Filename : draft-ietf-tsvwg-sctp-udp-encaps-07.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2012-12-23

Abstract:
This document describes a simple method of encapsulating SCTP Packets
into UDP packets and its limitations. This allows the usage of SCTP
in networks with legacy NAT not supporting SCTP. It can also be used
to implement SCTP on hosts without directly accessing the IP-layer,
for example implementing it as part of the application without
   requiring special privileges.

Ok, this topic has had sufficient "soak time" - having seen no objections,
the Atlanta "hum" on Diffserv Classes is confirmed as the rough consensus
of the tsvwg WG:

> Restating - the sense of the room in Atlanta was that interactive
> media (e.g., multi-media conferencing) needs to be broken out of the
> existing diffserv media classes into at least one new class.

As promised, I will work with James on the next steps:

> If the sense of the room in Atlanta is confirmed, the next steps on
> Diffserv Classes are that I will work with James to come up with a list
> of all the things that he's proposing to change in
> draft-polk-tsvwg-rfc4594-update and ask the list whether each one
> of them needs attention (single subject/question emails).

My preference is to get the answers to those questions before asking
whether the tsvwg WG should adopt that draft as a WG draft.

Thanks,

This topic has also had sufficient "soak time" and hence having seen no
objections, the Atlanta "hum" on diffserv for interconnection is confirmed
as the rough consensus of the tsvwg WG:

> The item that I recall asking about was whether the IETF should work on a
> single set of recommended diffserv behavior (PHBs) and codepoints (DSCPs)
> for use in carrier interconnection?
>=20
> The sense of the room in Atlanta (as noted in the minutes) was that the
> IETF should work on this, with details of how to do that TBD - in
> particular there was no assumption about the relationship of this work
> to RFC 5127 on aggregation of Diffserv Classes (e.g., if undertaken,
> this new work may or may not be carried out by revising RFC 5127).

The next step is going to take a little while:

> If the sense of the room in Atlanta is confirmed, the next action is
> for me to work through the ITU-T SG12 liaison (primarily the draft of
> y.qosmap) and consult with Ruediger about what makes sense before
> bringing a proposal for what to do back to this list.

I will send a separate note on RFC 5160 shortly, and do intend to work
through the liaison material in order to get a proposal for what to do
out to the list in time for it to be an input to the liaison response
to SG12 that is due at the end of February.=20

Thanks,

<tsvwg WG co-chair hat OFF>

I've also taken a look at RFC 5160, and have some comments as an
individual who's worked on QoS at the IETF, not as a WG co-chair.

Like Ruediger, I'm pleased to see agreement on the value of
"standardizing a very limited set of interconnection classes".

I note that RFC 5160 was published as an RFC Editor independent
submission, so its status is indicated by the IESG Note on page 1:

This RFC is not a candidate for any level of Internet Standard. The
IETF disclaims any knowledge of the fitness of this RFC for any
purpose and notes that the decision to publish is not based on IETF
review apart from IESG review for conflict with IETF work. The RFC
Editor has chosen to publish this document at its discretion. See
   RFC 3932 for more information.

I do appreciate the authors introducing RFC 5160 as interesting input,
and as input, it's interesting (thank you), but I don't believe that
it should be treated as more than interesting input. For that reason,
while there are a number of things in RFC 5160 that I don't agree with
(e.g., I concur with Ruediger's critique of the D,J,L framework), much
of that is not relevant to this discussion, as I see no problem with
considering interesting input and then deciding to do something else.

The core mechanism for interconnection QoS in RFC 5160 is the cross-domain
binding of Local QoS Classes described in Section 5.2. As I understand
Ruediger's critique of current Diffserv interconnection practices, that
cross domain binding mechanism is an example of the per-peer QoS mapping
that currently prevails - for a discussion of why that can be problematic,
see Section 3 of draft-geib-tsvwg-diffserv-intercon-00.txt . RFC 5160
then proceeds to constrain that per-peer QoS mapping via a notion of
Meta-QOS-Classes, but it doesn't seem to proceed beyond an abstract
level in developing that concept in Section 5.3.

In contrast, to render the proposed Diffserv for interconnection work
into RFC 5160's terminology framework, the proposed work is to use the
existing Diffserv specifications as the basis for standardizing a small
number of Meta-QOS-Classes (Diffserv PHBs) and associated codepoints
(Diffserv DSCPs) for use in network interconnection. This is intended
to enable a network operator to map traffic between their network-internal
QoS management framework and a single standardized set of PHBs and
codepoints at network edges in order to obtain QoS behavior across
interconnections with other networks (as opposed to having to do such
mapping on a per-peer-network basis).

Thanks,
--David (as individual, not WG co-chair)
