Sadly, I think we ought not meet in the US in the near future
as the level of uncertainty involved has sufficient potential
to cause significant problems. I do not think that the issue
of some US residents' possible travel problems with leaving
from and returning to the US outweighs the uncertainties involved
in holding an event in the US - while that is a possible issue,
it seems to me very much more probable that issues arise that
prevent non-US residents accessing a US meeting.

I've no particular inputs on the other cities, they all seem
to be credible.

I was a little surprised Prague wasn't on the list but I guess
one can get too much of a good thing;-)

And thanks for asking. I hope you also summarise the input you
got back to the IETF announce list, perhaps before Prague.

S.

Hello,

My observations might be very common, feel free to disregard them.

Helsinki , Ottawa and Calgary not on main travel routes, but acceptable if =
a little dull.

Busan is really one hop further beyond an already far city, in addition the=
city is not well suited to non-Korean as English is less used than in Seou=
l. Food can be an issue.

Barcelona, good, can be very busy and expensive at times (eg MWC)

Osaka has good connections and hotels.

Us cities are increasingly problematic for non-US citizens, such as for obt=
aining visas (still OK for Europeans) and there are strange noises on what =
happens to electronic equipments crossing the border (search, seizure, pass=
word declarations, ...)

San Francisco

Austin, TX

Boston

Denver

Houston

New Orleans

Philadelphia

Washington DC
If we must go to the US travel is even between many cities except those wit=
h significant international connections (SFO, Boston, Washington, Philly) w=
hich are better from that standpoint. There is a cost factor with SFO and =
Boston which tend to be more expensive.

Best regards,
Julien Maisonneuve, Nokia Corporate Standards.

A great choice but *only* for July. The weather in Nov or March can be punishing. (Locals will not agree but they're used to it. Also, in July, you get 18 hours of daylight so more work can be done.)

Sadly I have to agree with those who say "don't meet in the USA" for the next few years. It's not a political or panic reaction: the risk of deterring participation is quite high.

Canada: good. But why not repeat Vancouver and Toronto which worked well?

Considering this list of potential cities, Barcelona and Helsinki are =
the most expensive for a trip from Santa Barbara California; even Busan =
is cheaper, which surprised me. That said, given the required facilities =
and prevalence of travel options (which I don't have data on, but wonder =
about with respect to Ottawa or Busan, and perhaps Helsinki), I'm OK =
with any of them.

To give an idea what I mean about travel options - in Hiroshima, most =
people arrived by train, and while flights from ICN and NRT existed, =
there weren't very many. I thought the train was fine, but there was =
noise about the fact. If I were to invite people to Santa Barbara, most =
would come to LAX and rent a car or take the Santa Barbara Airbus - =
Santa Barbara has a nice airport, but I think we would have a hard time =
bringing 1000+ people in or out on a given day. I have those questions =
regarding Busan and Ottawa, and for completeness probably Helsinki - =
there might not be a problem, but I would recommend that the meetings =
committee actively determine that to be true.

Busan is the major port and the 2nd largest city of Korea. Rich in meeting
facilities and hot spots. One of popular places for Japanese neighbors.

Although there are not many international flights into the city, except
from some Asian countries, it is accessible with one last leg from most
neighboring Far East Asian cities including Incheon, Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing.

If people are ready to fly there, they might also be interested in Jeju
island:

A Hawaii of Korea, it's a semi-tropic volcanic island, a UNESCO natural
heritage. Beautiful nature and a few convention center. Visa-free, so less
trouble for entry.

Just FYI.
