Hi All,

I am trying to send a Gratuitous ARP on NetBSD 1.4.1, but facing some =
problems.
While capturing the packet using tcpdump i am receiving the packet as =
the=20
arp-whohas HOSTA tell HOSTB, instead of HOSTA tell HOSTA.

I checked up the fields of the ethernet frame but it seems to be =
correct.
Even if memset the buffer to 0 and send the buffer using RAW socket
same behaviour is happening. The HOSTA showed by tcpdump resides in my
subnet (!!!!). I am attaching the part of my program which does this =
work.

The tcpdump shows the message only if i run my program, i checked this =
up and
it seems somewhere something wrong is happening which i am unable to =
figure out??

Pls suggest/guide in this regard.
Thanks in advance=20
Rajnish

'whohas' would appear to be ARP request while 'tell' is
ARP reply. you appear to be sending request:

>>    packet->arp_op = htons(ARPOP_REQUEST);

so to get tcpdump output with 'tell' try changing op to reply(2).

Hi Danny,

I tried the modifications as u suggested. But i'am getting the following
output in from tcpdump

"09:51:41.493636 0:10:5a:a9:17:a5 Broadcast arp 42: arp who-has 157.227.2.96
tell dynarc."

I had checked up and found out that 157.227.2.96 is the default router set
on the NetBSD.
I also removed the entry from the routing table for the default route and
the program responded
with the error condition as NO default route specified.

I am bit confused as while sending the Gratutious ARP why its trying to get
the MAC address of
the default router.

When I specify the default route as 157.227.2.96 and send the buffer
following output is appeared
on the tcpdump.

"10:12:18.566947 0:10:5a:a9:17:a5 Broadcast arp 42: arp who-has 157.227.2.96
tell dynarc.
  10:12:18.567238 0:60:8:98:72:ff 0:10:5a:a9:17:a5 arp 60: arp reply
157.227.2.96 is-at 0:60:8:98:72:ff
  10:12:18.567263 0:10:5a:a9:17:a5 0:60:8:98:72:ff ip 76: dynarc. >
48.0.0.0: egp: [version 255]"

First two lines are for the arp-request and reply for the default router.
Not sure about the third output.
Hope this information will help you in figuring out where i am wrong.

Thanks in advance
Rajnish

Hi !
I've read draft-ietf-vrrp-ext-00 which adds a new message type - LEAVE_GROUP and also talks about VRRP V3.
Is this ext. is now common worldwide ?. Does the VRRP V3 common ?.
I know I must support it in my code but wanted to know more generally.

Thanks ,

I have been involved in several test scenarios comparing HSRP to VRRP fail
over times and have found no mentionable difference.

Best regards.

Amnon,

The draft you reference was an individual submission (and was renamed as
such) was not adopted by the w.g. As far as I am aware, it is not implemented.

Regards,
Bob

>> Does somebody know what is HSRP failover time (passing control from
>> master to backup) - is it better than VRRP ?

a HSRP deployment with some appropriate values for 'Hellotime' and
'Holdtime' will have virtually equivalent failover time as a VRRP
deployment with corresponding values for 'Advertisement_Interval'
and 'Master_Down_Interval'. the failover dynamics and reconvergence
properties of the protocols can differ when there are more than one
router in the Backup state, however any differences are likely to
be imperceptible to most user/application. I believe there is some
related discussion in the bowels of the working group mail archives.

See RFC 2578 section 7.7

Objects which are both specified in the INDEX clause of a conceptual
row and also columnar objects of the same conceptual row are termed
auxiliary objects. The MAX-ACCESS clause for auxiliary objects is
"not-accessible", except in the following circumstances: [snip]

Basically, you can get this Managed Object's value as a byproduct of any
object in the table by using the oid from the varbind returning some value.

Hi All,

Actually last weekend i tried to create and send a gratituous ARP on my
NetBSD1.4.1,
but in vain. I created the complete Ethernet frame and sent it on the Raw
socket. But it
didn't work.

After this i downloaded libnet API and saw how it works, for IP packets it
uses RAW socket
and for Ethernet frames it uses the link layer device (bpf0 etc). And in the
documentation
it says for sending the Ethernet Frame we need to use the Link layer
Interface rather than RAW
sockets. But i had seen the LINUX implementations in which RAW Sockets are
being used to send the Ethernet Frames.

I understand that for sending the IP packets we have a IP_HDRINCL setsockopt
which suppressess
the creation of the IP header, is there any way i can suppress the creation
of Ethernet header
also using a RAW socket.

Write now i am using the following command to create the RAW socket
sockFd = socket(PF_INET, SOCK_RAW, htons(0x0806));

and in the sendto address i passed my interface name "ex0"

Any help/guidance in this regard will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in Advance
Rajnish

Hi !
Suppose a router is configured with a VIP different then any of his real interfaces, meaning it's not the IP Owner (!).
Still, when it's up - it becomes the master since it has the highest priority among the virtual router.
According to RFC 2338 which says under section 6.4.3 :
"Master....MUST NOT accept packets addressed to the IP address(es) associated
with the virtual router if it is not the IP address owner..."
This router will not ever accept packets. Is this correct ?.
How can it be ?.

Waiting for your response,
Regards,

Hi !
A question:
----------------
Regrding the VRRP Associated IP Address Table - Is an entry in it been configured by the Administrator or been learned by a router (backUp) from packets sent by the master ?. Or maybe both ?.
If not, what is the reason(s) for sending the IP address(es) in the packet as one or more then its fields ?.

10x,

all routers must have at least one permanently assigned [``owned'']
address. the way the protocol is defined all management operations,
SNMP operations, remote login, etc. should use this permanent address.
then by disallowing receipt/response to adopted addresses it allows
management tools to detect the failed router and consistently know
what device is being affected when taking management actions. there
definitely seemed to be desire and consensus in the working group to
make this behavior consistent.

the odd effect in failover mode is that a host may be unable to ping
its default router and yet IP access through the nexthop address is
just fine. I guess there could have been a special exception to allow
response to ICMP Echo Request to get around this anomoly. however
opening that up for discussion could start a chain of requests for
exceptions, which makes implementation and interoperability more
troublesome, and also interferes with the desire to make failure
detection consistent (some management tools may be based on ICMP
Echo Request/Reply).

all parameters in vrrp operation [authentication type, advertisement
interval, associated addresses, etc] must be configured. there was a
desire to avoid ``auto learning'' of configuration as that can lead to
odd failure scenarios. the reason for including the parameters in the
packet is for sanity checking during receive processing, allowing for
rapid notification of inconsistent/mis-configurations.

ATTENTION BUSINESS OWNER/OPERATOR

From time to time, most companies experience a cash flow problem. These problems can range from temporary cash crunches with the inability to pay trade creditors and suppliers within the granted credit terms to more serious problems including bankruptcy and liquidation.

If you own or operate a company with a cash flow problem, we can help. Brown & MacMillan is a national consulting company specializing in reducing problem debts for companies of all sizes. Since our inception in 1994, we have helped hundreds of companies including small "mom and pops" to large multi-national organizations. We keep our clients out of the legal system so they can concentrate on their business enabling a large savings in both time and money.

We typically reduce our client's accounts payable and other debts to less than 20 cents on the dollar! In fact, our settlements rarely go higher than 35 cents on the dollar. Furthermore, we put our clients in a no lose situation. We always give them the opportunity to accept or reject any settlement we negotiate for them. If they do not like the settlement we negotiated, we charge them nothing. If they accept, our fee is based on a small percentage of what we saved them over the original amount owed. Therefore, we don't charge by the hour, never charge a retainer, but only get paid when you accept a satisfactory settlement that we have negotiated on your behalf.

If your creditors are constantly calling your company for payment, or have even retained a collection agency or attorney, I strongly urge you to fill out the form below and fax it back to us. Just imagine what your cash and working capital positions would look like in a few short weeks after an 80% reduction of debt. You have absolutely nothing to lose.

 Sincerely,

 Brown & MacMillan

Please fill out this form and Fax to 1-775-218-7414. If this line is busy, please try faxing to 1-435-514-1078.
