There are still some open questions about IDN search processing:

1. Normalization? Yes or no. If yes, which form?

2. Unicode partial matching. Refer to RFC 5892 and I-D.ietf-precis-nickname=
 or RFC 5891?

We haven't started crafting an agenda yet, but I'd say it's a safe bet that
this will be on there.

I'll try to get a rough agenda out in the next few days. It's due in a
couple of weeks.

When the RIRs met to put together a unified model, many things were
purposefully left out, among them the routing registry specific objects
and queries. The intent was that such objects and queries, including IP
search queries for more specific nets, would be added at a later time when
it was felt the community desired them. At present there is not much in
the way of IRR community participation on this list. I think adding these
objects and queries to our documents now would further delay us as we
would need to seek out IRR participants for their feedback.

Ah. That seems reasonable. Is it worth putting in a sentence making
it explicit that we know about those objects but are not addressing
them at this time?

Nominations for the IESG, IAB, and IAOC are due to the Nomcom by Friday, 18
October, 2013.

Is there someone you work with at IETF who has leadership potential and a
growing track record? Please read the Nomcom call for nominations and
consider nominating her or him. Or several folks! Deadline for nominations
is October 18. Nominate soon to give your nominee(s) plenty time to fill
in the questionnaire. Information about the desired expertise for positions
is here:
           https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/expertise

Lots more, including which positions are open, how to make a nomination,
and how to
send us your feedback on the desired expertise, follows.

IETFers, let's hear from you! Make nominations, accept nominations!

If you have any questions about the process, feel free to get in touch with
me.

Best regards,

Allison for the Nomcom

Allison Mankin
Nomcom Chair 2013-14

----- The Info You Need for Nominating -----

The 2013-14 Nominating Committee (Nomcom) is seeking nominations
from now until October 18, 2013. The open positions being considered
by this year's Nomcom can be found later in this section, and also on
this year's Nomcom website:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/

Nominations may be made by selecting the Nominate link at the top of
the Nomcom 2013 home page, or by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/nominate/

Note that nominations made using the web tool require an ietf.org
datatracker account. You can create a datatracker ietf.org account
if you don't have one already by visiting the following URL:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/accounts/create/

Nominations may also be made by email to nomcom13 at ietf.org.
If you nominate by email, please include the word "Nominate" in the Subject
and indicate in the email who is being nominated, their email address (to
confirm acceptance of the nomination), and the position for which you
are making the nomination. If you use email, please use a separate email for
each person you nominate, and for each position (if you are nominating one
person for multiple positions).

Self-nomination is welcome! No need to be shy.

Nomcom 2013-14 will follow the policy for "Open Disclosure of Willing
Nominees" described in RFC 5680. As stated in RFC 5680: "The list of
nominees willing to be considered for positions under review in the
current Nomcom cycle is not confidential". Willing nominees for each
position will be listed in a publicly accessible way - anyone with a
datatracker account may access the lists. In all other ways, the
confidentiality requirements of RFC 3777/BCP10 remain in effect. All
feedback and all Nomcom deliberations will remain confidential and will
not be disclosed.

In order to ensure time to collect sufficient community feedback about
each of the willing nominees, nominations must be received by the
Nomcom on or before October 18, 2013. Please submit your nominations
as early as possible for the sake of your nominees, as we've set the
questionnaire submission deadline for October 25, 2013.

The list of people and posts whose terms end with the March 2014 IETF
meeting,
and thus the positions for which we are accepting nominations:

IAOC
Chris Griffiths

IAB
Bernard Aboba
Marc Blanchet
Ross Callon
Eliot Lear
Hannes Tschofenig

IESG
Barry Leiba (Applications)
Brian Haberman (Internet)
Benoit Claise (Operations and Management)
Gonzalo Camarillo (RAI)
Stewart Bryant (Routing)
Sean Turner (Security)
Martin Stiemerling (Transport)

Please be resourceful in identifying possible candidates for these
positions, as developing our talent is a very crucial requirement for
the IETF. Also, please give serious consideration to accepting nominations
you receive.

The summaries of the desired expertise for the positions, developed by the
respective bodies, are found at:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/nomcom/2013/expertise/

In addition to nominations, the Nomcom seeks community input on
the positions themselves. We need and welcome the community's
views and input on the jobs within each organization. If you
have ideas on the positions' responsibilities (more, less,
different), please let us know. You can send us email about this to
nomcom13 at ietf.org, and we will use this feedback actively.

Thank you for your help in nominating a great pool of strong and interesting
nominees!

I'll try to add a RIR survey result including the analysis of the data

the resource. In addition, clarify why we address the selected objects in
this draft not them all.

Linlin

Hello,

I found something like typo and have a minor comment on
draft-ietf-weirds-json-response-06. The comment is about street
addresses of an entity.

Excuse me if this topic is already discussed.

---
6.3. The Domain Object Class
     ...
     "ldhName" : "blah.example.com",
     ...
     "nameServers" :
     [

Should "nameServers" be "nameservers"? I found other two same typos.

---
A.1. Registrants and Contacts
...
embedded entity that is both a registrant and admin contact:
...
         "roles" : [ "registrant", "admin" ],
...

Should these "admin" be "administrative" according to definition of
10.2.3.? I found another same typo.

---
Appendix C. Structured vs Unstructured Addresses

I felt confusion between street address in Appendix C and street
addresses described in RFC 5733(EPP Contact Mapping).

This I-D says here about these addresses:
...
   1. post office box - not applicable, empty string

   2. extended address (e.g., apartment or suite number) - Suite 1234

   3. street address - 4321 Rue Somewhere

OTOH, an example in 3.1.2. EPP <info> Command in RFC 5733:
...
   S: <contact:addr>
   S: <contact:street>123 Example Dr.</contact:street>
   S: <contact:street>Suite 100</contact:street>
...

In this werds I-D, addresses under street address are strictly
separated according to jCal specification. But in RFC 5733, they are
all put into <street>. Also these orders seem opposite.

Especially for an implementor who is not familiar with US addressing
like me, it would be better if something like a hint for conversion
between them is described around here.

Regards,

Naoki Kambe

Murray, do you have an agenda identified for the meeting? If Andy and I wil=

Subject: [weirds] Call for WEIRDS Agenda items for November

Colleagues,

It's that time again. If you would like to make a presentation to WEIRDS w=
hen we convene in November, or if you would like to request that someone co=
ver a specific topic, please email weirds-chairs@tools.ietf.org<mailto:weir=
ds-chairs@tools.ietf.org> with your topic and requested time. We need some=
idea of how long the meeting will be so we can request an appropriate time=
slot. As I said in Berlin, we will be more liberal with the amount of tim=
e we request since we seem to consistently run out of time, but we still ne=
ed some idea in advance of what the agenda will look like so we can be sure=
 major subject areas are covered.

The deadline for us to request a time slot is only a few weeks away, so ple=
ase don't leave your requests until the last minute.

Thanks!
-MSK, WEIRDS co-chair

Hello,
based on our discussion on bootstrap in Berlin and the ideas suggested =
to use a label under the TLD for the names and the NRO file for IP =
addresses and AS, I wrote this draft to capture the ideas. Hopefully, it =
is in line with the suggestions. It is not full baked but enough to =
discuss I think. When we will reach concensus on the method(DNS, IANA, =
this one), I'll update appropriately.

comments welcome.

Regards, Marc.

We had a thread about the survey a long time ago, and I promised to send th=
e final version of the report when it was done.

It took a lot longer than it should have for a few reasons, but the report =
now is official after the ICANN GNSO Council approved it last week (more bu=
reaucratese than necessary, I guess).

It looks basically OK -- most of the alternatives have been ruled out
so these are what's left. A and AAAA in the TLDs are no good unless
we want to invent a new reserved name and check to make sure that
nobody has used it yet.

For the numbers bootstraps, assuming the RIRs are agreeable, I'd like
to say that the much smaller IANA allocation list is an acceptable
substitute for the NRO list. I expect some people will find a 300,000
line bootstrap file a bit rich for their setups. The differences
between the IANA and NRO files should all be known to the relevant
RIRs, who can issue redirects, no?

John

The style is to use camel-casing, so it is suppose to be "nameServers".
I'll look for the typos.

Yes, it should be administrative. Thanks.

We can work on an example conversion between 5733 and jCard. Thanks for
the idea.

Anyway the lower-case style seems to be used for nameservers here
(members description in 6.3.):

o nameservers -- an array of nameserver objects as defined by
      Section 6.2

Also a part of "nameserverSearchResults" is lower case. I think it
would be better that we have a consistency.

Domain search is specified as /domains?name=XXXX
Response is specified as
     "handle" : "1-XXXX",
     "ldhName" : "1.example.com",
Since the search can be for either ldh or unicode names, "ldhName" may
not be correct.
Also, to avoid confusion with the query draft, the response example
should not use "XXXX", or else spell out what the actual query was for
this example.

In general, if a search is made for parameter "searchfor", the result
should include a field with "searchfor" so the client can determine
which returned field corresponds to the search request. This will allow
the client to choose how to manage and display the results, e.g.
alphabetic order of the search request.

So, the response for an entity search by name /entities?fn=Joe*
should have a response like
     "handle" : "A12345",
     "fn" : "Joe User",

The search for domains and nameservers can be redirected, since they
contain .tld and a redirector can determine the server for that domain.
For entity search there is no such information. However that could be
provided by changing the entity search query to something like
/entities?fn=XXXX&tld=YYY

A similar extension could also be used with entity lookup queries so
that they could also be redirected.

In article <52699066.4060103@afilias.info> you write:

I'm confused. Aren't entities specific to TLDs? The only redirects that
would make sense would be to other servers that handle (perhaps part of)
the same name space.

If a client sends a request for a domain to a redirector, it will get a
response that most likely includes handles for one or more entities. To
get the details for one of those entities, it can analyze the url from
which it received the (redirected) response to extract the authoritative
server, or it can send the entity request to the redirector.

Note that the domain response should also have a link to the entity,
which is direct and preferable to using redirection. But the above
suggestion is a way to make redirection universal and applicable to all
RDAP queries, since the current specs do not support redirection for
entities.

On the other hand, if we define a simple universal bootstrap scheme
where clients can easily locate the server for any TLD, then perhaps we
don't need redirection at all, for DNRs at least.

Hmmn. It would seem obvious to say to send the request back to the server
that told you about the entity, but it's not clear how many clients make
it easy to examine the redirect chain for a response.

There are plenty of TLDs with internal structure below the TLD. A
familiar one is .UK where the TLD and CO.UK are Nominet, but .AC.UK is
Janet.

I've got mixed feelings about this. I can see the utility, but it just does=
n't feel right. The TLD is a natural part of domains and name servers. It's=
*not* a natural part of an entity. Plus, how would this work for an RIR wh=
ere there are entities, but no TLD? I'd like to stay away from special case=
logic in the protocol if at all possible.

I agree with Scott about staying away from special use case logic in the
protocol.

I do think there is room for redirects of entity lookups when used with
structured handles, but this is more of a convention issue rather than a
protocol issue. But searches are different than lookups, in that they can
return multiple results. What is a client suppose to do with multiple
referrals? Chase each one down? That seems troubling. Additionally, these
wouldn't be HTTP redirects but redirects at the JSON layer.

Here's the scenario I see as most likely to cause trouble. I look
up something like this:

	http://rdap-servers.net/domain/bull.hockey

It redirects to the real server for .hockey and I get back a blob
of JSON that includes something like this:

   {
     "handle" : "abc123",
     "roles" : [ "organization" ],
     ...
   }

To look up the handle abc123, I need to go back to the .hockey server,
but if I do this, I lose, because the redirector doesn't have the
context to know where that handle came from:

	http://rdap-servers.net/entity/abc123

A possible band-aid would be to include in the JSON response the name
of the server to handle related queries, which will usually be the one
returning the response.

This could also be useful for situtations like .AC.UK, where a
subdomain is under different management from the TLD. Even if you know
the TLD's server, you run into the same problem if the handles for a
subdomain are separate.

R's,
John

I'll talk to Andy about this. Consistency could indeed make things easier t=
