The following errata report has been submitted for RFC7483,
"JSON Responses for the Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP)".

--------------------------------------
You may review the report below and at:
http://www.rfc-editor.org/errata_search.php?rfc=7483&eid=4503

--------------------------------------
Type: Technical
Reported by: Scott Hollenbeck <shollenbeck@verisign.com>

Section: 5.2 and 5.3

Original Text
-------------
In Section 5.2:

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"ns1.xn--fo-5ja.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"ns1.foo.example\\",

In Section 5.3:

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"xn--fo-5ja.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"foo.example\\",

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"xn--fo-cka.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"foo.example\\"

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"xn--fo-fka.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"foo.example\\"

\\"ldhName\\": \\"xn--fo-8ja.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"foo.example\\"

Corrected Text
--------------
In Section 5.2:

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"ns1.xn--fo-5ja.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"ns1.fóo.example\\",

In Section 5.3:

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"xn--fo-5ja.example\\",

\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"föo.example\\"

\\"ldhName\\" : \\"xn--fo-8ja.example\\",
\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"fôo.example\\"

Notes
-----
The unicodeName examples in RFC 7483 are invalid per RFC 5890. Here\\'s an example from Section 5.2 on page 23:

\\"unicodeName\\" : \\"ns1.foo.example\\",

Section 3 of 7483 says this about Unicode names:

\\"Unicode names: Textual representations of DNS names where one or more of the labels are U-labels as described by [RFC5890].\\"

5890 says: \\"A \\"U-label\\" is an IDNA-valid string of Unicode characters, in Normalization Form C (NFC) and including at least one non-ASCII character, expressed in a standard Unicode Encoding Form (such as UTF-8).\\"

The examples in 7483 contain all ASCII characters. Syntactically valid examples are shown in the corrected text.

Ignore the backslash characters. They were inserted by the errata submission tool.

Hello,

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email]

Are you interested in meeting during IETF94 in order to discuss the gTLD
RDAP profile (see
http://mm.icann.org/pipermail/gtld-tech/2015-September/000507.html)?

If there is enough interest, I could request a room.

Remote participation would be provided if there is interest.

Regards,
Gustavo

Subject: [weirds] gTLD RDAP profile meeting during IETF94

Hello,

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email]

Are you interested in meeting during IETF94 in order to discuss the gTLD RD=
AP profile (see http://mm.icann.org/pipermail/gtld-tech/2015-September/0005=
07.html)?

If there is enough interest, I could request a room.

Remote participation would be provided if there is interest.

Regards,
Gustavo

Regards,
Gustavo

Just thought I'd bring this to the attention of the group(s).

draft-newton-rdap-jcr can be found here:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-newton-rdap-jcr/

It is an attempt to take the JSON described in RFC 7483 (RDAP) and
give it a formal schema using JCR.

Hello, all. I have been directed to this list as a possible place to get
some RDAP questions answered. Here's one, regarding RDAP entities, which
appear to include both contacts and registrars. In our system internally,
the two are quite separate, and in fact registrars can themselves have
multiple contacts, just as a domain can. So I'm trying to figure out how to
fit the data into the RDAP format.

First of all, is there a reason why registrars and contacts were lumped
together into one type of thing? Just curious.

The example in RFC 7483 for a registrar included several addresses and
phone numbers, as if the sample registrar also had contacts associated with
it. But none of the addresses and phone numbers were marked with anything
that would distinguish between the contacts (e.g. a type of "admin",
"tech", etc.). Should we just take all the data we have for a registrar,
including all addresses of associated contacts, and throw them into the
entity JSON object one after another? Can we mark them with the contact
role as a type? Or does type always need to be "home" or "work"?

RFC 7482 describes searching for an entity by name. In the case of our
registrars, we have two things that could be a "name": the name of the
registrar itself, and the name of any associated contact. Am I correct that
the search is confined to the registrar name? Or are we supposed to look
through to the contact names, and pass back any registrar with a matching
contact?

Thanks.

Brian

RFC 7482 describes the format of search strings to be used in partial match
queries. If I understand correctly, a wildcard search string should have a
prefix, exactly one wildcard asterisk, and then zero or more complete
domain labels at the end. I am wondering if the RDAP authors had in mind an
efficient way to implement such queries on a standard database system. The
prefix and single wildcard seem to be designed for ease of lookup using a
sorted database index. But then I'm not sure how one would efficiently
implement the domain label suffixes. For instance, it appears to be legal
to search for nameservers using the pattern ns*.subdomain.example.tld. The
ns* part is easy, but the suffix is harder to figure out. I am tempted to
think that the authors figured that queries too complicated for a given
system would just get rejected as per the wiggle room in the RFC. But if
that's the case, why is only one wildcard allowed? Why not define a generic
syntax with asterisk as the wildcard, and let implementors decide where to
draw the line. I'm unclear on the thought process behind the spec.

In a tangentially related question, it looked to me like IP address lookups
of nameservers and domains did not need to support a wildcard asterisk,
because the syntax was never defined. Is that true? Or does the RDAP spec
envision wildcard IP address lookups as well? If so, what is the syntax for
that?

Thanks.

Brian

In a related question, I'm trying to figure out how to return information
about contact roles. RFC 7483 includes a roles field at the entity level.
If we are returning information for a domain, that works fine. What do we
put in the roles field, though, if the user queries for the contact
directly? The role would depend on which, if any, domain is referencing the
contact. The contact could be a stand-alone entity with no referencing
domains at all. Is it expected that the registry will loop through all
domains, looking for any that reference the contact, and build a union of
all roles that the contact plays in any domain? That seems inefficient.

Yes, that is true for all object classes. Even entities can have entities.

Most likely nothing.

I would hope your indexes aren't built in such a way that you are
scanning all of your domains. Regardless of the inefficiency, roles do
not make sense in the context of an entity query. They are meant to
describe the relationship between an entity and the object instance
containing them.

I hope that helps explain it.

I'm sure if I thought about it for awhile, I could figure something
out. But you are correct that standard SQL 'like' matching won't do
the trick. Perhaps somebody from a domain registry could provide some
hints.

That is the answer you have been looking for. :)

Two reasons:
1) The working group felt that for any given query there had to be
some expectation of what would be returned, and more than one asterisk
could lead to all sorts of interpretation and lack of agreement. If
you want to define an extension to do this, feel free.
2) It didn't appear to be a feature of today's Whois servers, nor was
there a compelling need to cover this case.

I've often wondered about the use case for wildcard IP address
queries. IP address hierarchies follow a mathematical model that does
not perfectly align with the lexical notation (unless the notation is
binary). So by themselves they are problematic.

With respect to finding name servers by an IP address, the use case of
name servers by CIDR never came up. And I'm not sure it would be
useful. Do people really assign entire /24s (or whatever) to their
name servers?
