I'm not sure an integer like that would solve the problem... A might have=
 more
permissions upon X than B, but B might have more permissions upon Y than =
A. It
surely works if we consider that participant < moderator < administrator,=
 but
there could be fuzzy roles in between.

Hi,

In my presentation yesterday I didn't express myself in a proper way and
many of you got confuse about the persistent information problem.
Actually the problem is very simple. A user in a conference is mapped
using the 'unique conference user identifier' (XCON_USERID). A user can
have a different XCON_USERID for every conference he is involve. As you
know, now the data model stores some persistent information: nickname,
name and e-mail.   =20

My first question was: Is the XCON_USERID a temporal identifier? I mean,
when I connect to a conference I get one XCON_USERID. If I decide to
disconnect myself from my conference and connect again later I will get
the same XCON_USERID or different one? =20

My second question was: which method shall we use to map the persistent
information store in the data model with the non-persistent information?
(this is related to the first question) Is it ok if we map one nickname
with several XCON_USERIDs?=20

My last question: what other persistent information you think we should
store in the data model rather than nicknames, user's name and e-mail?

Cheers,

Oscar

I think at a minimum we should at least be defining <roles> in the same
manner that was done in the SIP conference event package:

5.6.3.  <roles>

   This element MAY contain a set of human-readable strings describing
   the roles of the user in the conference. Note that this information
   is applicable for human consumption only. This specification does
   not define the set of possible conferencing roles or the semantics
   associated with each. It is expected that future conferencing
   specifications will define these and the corresponding schema
   extensions, as appropriate.

Then in the schema:
     <!--
         USER ROLES TYPE
      -->
      <xs:complexType name=3D"user-roles-type">
       <xs:sequence>
        <xs:element name=3D"entry" type=3D"xs:string"
         maxOccurs=3D"unbounded"/>
       </xs:sequence>
       <xs:anyAttribute namespace=3D"##other" processContents=3D"lax"/>
      </xs:complexType>
      <!--=20

I find it very disturbing that we're doing the "future conferencing
specifications" referenced in RFC 4575 yet we aren't able to define some
reasonable strings. =20

In addition, not defining roles in the basic data model is inconsistent
with the framework where we define role as the following and state that
a default role will always exist:

Role: A role provides the context for the set of conference
      operations that a participant can perform. A default role (e.g.,
      standard conference participant) will always exist, providing a
      user with a set of basic conference operations. Based on system
      specific authentication and authorization, a user may take on
      alternate roles, such as conference moderator, allowing access to
      a wider set of conference operations.

In addition, there are many, many references to roles in the framework.
Certainly, if there's consensus, I can remove all of them or make
appropriate notes that roles are entirely defined in the policy solution
which is FFS. But, I think that leaves some fairly large conceptual gaps
in the framework, particularly given that the examples liberally
reference the roles. =20

I seems quite reasonable to define the following basic strings: "user",
"participant", ""moderator", "administrator", "observer" and add
appropriate text that the use of the roles is subject to policy (system
specific) and is FFS. The default would be "user". I can't see that
this would cause any harm. I do fully agree that in the end we need
flexibility and extensibility for the role definition and that in terms
of effective use, we need to associated policy work completed.

That's true. Normally a role is a bunch of permissions but still I think
we can use the decimals to sort the fuzzy combinations. For instance,
the first digit could identify the general role and the other digits
could identify particular permissions.=20

Using your example and supposing A and B has the same general role, the
example could be something like:=20

General_Role.PermissionX.PermissionY

(A role) 3.5.4 -> A has more permissions upon X than B
(B role) 3.4.5 -> B has more permissions upon Y than A

That's an idea. One of the problems with this idea is, if we have
thousend fuzzy permissions, we'll have thousend and one digits per role.
Maybe is it too complicated?=20

I'm not sure an integer like that would solve the problem... A might
have more permissions upon X than B, but B might have more permissions
upon Y than A. It surely works if we consider that participant <
moderator < administrator, but there could be fuzzy roles in between.

Hi all,

Per the discussion yesterday on the CCMP protocol draft, here's the
reference to the discussion in GEOPRIV WG on WSDL falling out of favor:
http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/geopriv/current/msg04654.html

I am totally neutral on this and given the discussion yesterday in XCON,
I plan on going forward with the WSDL in the CCMP document, but welcome
other views.

Hi Mary/all,

I would like to jump into the discussion once again, by pointing you =20
to an old message I posted to the list in March:

http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/xcon/current/msg01919.html

The mail was all about roles and policies in XCON. I would like to =20
know your feeling about my proposal.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

Thanks for the reminder. I had one important note that the "CAMEL" that =
I had in my charts yesterday was refering to the XACML in the referenced =
message (for the folks that were having an AIN anxiety attack).=20

Perhaps, I mis-interpreted this thread, but I read the following in the =
thread to mean that the roles weren't defined by this model and the =
model still relied on roles defined in the data model with policy around =
that based on you example following this text:

  " That's all. With these policies in place, acess to the (XCON data =
model...)
conference object should be appropriately controlled.
Coming to the issue of assigning users to roles, which is BTW outside =
the scope
of an XACML Policy Decision Point (PDP), can be done through
so-called role-assignment policies. Such assignment should be under the
responsibility of an ad-hoc dedicated Role Assignment entity."

I was viewing role as a necessary input or index to the policy, but =
something would still live in the conference object (i.e., the role is a =
pointer to the necessary policy data (reflected by the associated with =
this specific role). =20

Hi Mary/all,

I would like to jump into the discussion once again, by pointing you to =
an old message I posted to the list in March:

http://www1.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/xcon/current/msg01919.html

The mail was all about roles and policies in XCON. I would like to know =
your feeling about my proposal.

Cheers,

Simon

Hi Simon,

I checked this document quiet many time ago when you sent it first time =
to the list. I always thought it was a good document and many of this =
work could be adopt in the XCON WG.
However, what we're dicussing here is if it's good to define a standard =
set of roles value in the data model or not. IMO that's not appropiate =
now because that definitions will be very dependent to the conference =
policy will define in the future.=20

And as a matter of fact, I've checked again the "Core and hierarchical =
role based access control (RBAC) profile of XACML v2.0" document and =
section 4.1 says the following:=20

"The set of roles is very application and policy domain-specific, and it =
is very important that different uses of roles not be confused. For
these reasons, this profile does not attempt to define any standard set =
of role values, although this profile does recommend use of a common =
AttributeId value... It is recommended that each application or policy =
domain agree on and publish a unique set of AttributeId values, ... that =
will be used for the various roles relevant to that domain".

Cheers,

Oscar=20

This is exactly what I stated in my e-mail. The example I sent indeed =20
contained also a definition of roles ("creaor" and "user", also with =20
role restrictions) made through the AttributeId values. I hope this =20
clarifies the point raised by Mary in her e-mail.

I'm willing to help with this stuff in case the group thinks this =20
might be the right direction to follow.

Mary,

The data model does define roles in the same manner than RFC4575. As
well, the data model defines extra role elements. What I meant is that
we should not define the semantic of the roles now because this will
depend pretty much of the conference definition policy.=20

Moreover, if we decide to define the semantic of the roles later any
change has to be done to the framework.=20

Subject: RE: [XCON] Roles in the data model

I think at a minimum we should at least be defining <roles> in the same
manner that was done in the SIP conference event package:

5.6.3.  <roles>

   This element MAY contain a set of human-readable strings describing
   the roles of the user in the conference. Note that this information
   is applicable for human consumption only. This specification does
   not define the set of possible conferencing roles or the semantics
   associated with each. It is expected that future conferencing
   specifications will define these and the corresponding schema
   extensions, as appropriate.

Then in the schema:
     <!--
         USER ROLES TYPE
      -->
      <xs:complexType name=3D"user-roles-type">
       <xs:sequence>
        <xs:element name=3D"entry" type=3D"xs:string"
         maxOccurs=3D"unbounded"/>
       </xs:sequence>
       <xs:anyAttribute namespace=3D"##other" processContents=3D"lax"/>
      </xs:complexType>
      <!-- =20

Subject: [XCON] Roles in the data model

Continuing yesterday's discussion about roles...

I still don't see the utility to define some tokens in the data model. I
really think the definition of those roles will depend very much of the
definition of the policy in the data model. If the data model defines a
bunch of tokens without defining the semantic of them it can cause big
confusion for many reader. The definition of those tokens will have
implicit a semantic. For instance, the token 'observer' has a semantic
implicit but I'm sure that semantic differs from different people.=20

My proposal here is to work on this problem in the policy document or in
a different document. If we decide to work in a different document there
is a very old document
(http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-morgan-xcon-roles-00.txt) which tries to
define the role semantic in XCON. I think that document could be a base
to start discussing about roles rather than the data model.

If the WG still thinks is essential the definition of the roles in the
data model I would suggest the definitions of the roles to be numerical
rather than textual to avoid semantic conflict. The roles definition
could be only simple integers starting from '0', having the '0' role
more permissions than the '1' role.=20

Oscar,

Okay. I thought you had been proposing that we delete the roles
altogether. My concern in the previous versions of the document was
around trying to define the hierarchy, especially with the "observer"
role.=20

I would still prefer that we define some basic strings and make the
element extensible. At a minimum, we do need to define a default value
for the role to be consistent with the definition in the framework.=20

Thanks,
Mary. =20

      -->
      <xs:complexType name=3D"user-roles-type">
       <xs:sequence>
        <xs:element name=3D"entry" type=3D"xs:string"
         maxOccurs=3D"unbounded"/>
       </xs:sequence>
       <xs:anyAttribute namespace=3D"##other" processContents=3D"lax"/>
      </xs:complexType>
      <!-- =20

XCON members,

Time for a "stupid newbie" question that I feel I need to ask. After
the meeting in Vancouver last week, I found myself with a great amount
of questions about what exactly XCON is trying to do. I read through
the charter[1] and "additional information"[2] and went through the
recent drafts [3][4] as well as other documents[5]. I read the
Conferencing Scenarios[6] and requirements for floor control protocols[7].

It's very obvious to me that an **incredible** amount of work has been
put into all these efforts over several years. But what is NOT obvious
to me as a newcomer to the group is a very fundamental question:

 - WHY is all this work being done? What is the problem statement? Who
is going to use this work when it is done?

The closest I seem to be able to get is in the "Description of Working
Group" found on the charter page[1] where it says this:
------
The scope of this effort is intentionally more narrow than previous
attempts to standardize conferencing (e.g. centralized control), and is
intended to enable interoperability in a commercial environment which
already has a number of non-standard implementations using some of the
protocols.
------
>From this I find myself asking... so is the point to make it so that I
could have a conference on, for example, an Avaya conferencing bridge
and another conference on a Nortel conferencing bridge and have the two
conferencing sessions interoperate? (I could see that being an issue
if, for instance, a company with an Avaya switch acquired a company with
a Nortel switch (or pick your vendors names)). Is that the goal? On
the other hand, the drafts seem to be defining an overall conferencing
system... which I don't understand who would ever build given that most
vendors currently have their own (proprietary) conferencing systems and
I don't understand why they would want to drop all that to move to a
standardized conferencing system.

What problem in the market *today* is this working group trying to solve?

Is there a draft out there that I missed that states use cases or
problem statements? Are there either vendors or large customers who are
clamoring for this kind of functionality? Do some vendors already have
partial implementations?

Please understand... I am not raising these questions to be critical.
You all who have been participating for some time may have a common
understanding of the problem statement that was perhaps discussed back
in email somewhere (I did NOT plow through all the old list archives).
Please consider this simply feedback from at least *this* particular
newcomer that it is not at all clear to me from existing documents/web
pages WHY I would want to participate in this working group. (My
employer does provide conferencing as part of our products/services, so
on one level, it would seem to me to make sense for me to be involved
with a "centralized conferencing" working group.)

Any pointers would be definitely appreciated.

Thank you,
Dan

Hello,

You can fetch the new Data model draft from:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-xcon-common-data-model-08
.txt

Summary of the main modifications:

Persistent list issue:

Our proposal is to leave the persistent information in the data model
and mapped this information using the 'unique conference user
identifier' (XCON_USERID).

Roles issue:

Apparently I'm the only one who oppose to include the roles in the data
model. So, in the new version we'll include the following roles: "none"
(just to indicate any role is assigned; use in the <conference-time>
element), "administrator", "moderator", "user", "observer", and
"participant". It's possible to extent roles with more values in the
future.=20

Mary, you were the responsable to summarize the pre-defined nouns for
roles. Do you think this roles are fine or you would like to propose
another ones?

Clarification of the language tag issue:

This is the new text for the language element:

"The <language> element indicates the predominant language that is
expected to be employed within a conference. This element is not
enforcing the language of the conference, only informs to the
participants about the desirable language that they should used in the
conference. Participants are free to switch to other languages if they
like."

Cheers,

Oscar

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Centralized Conferencing Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Conference Information Data Model for Centralized Conferencing (XCON)
	Author(s)       : O. Novo, et al.
	Filename        : draft-ietf-xcon-common-data-model-08.txt
	Pages           : 72
	Date            : 2007-12-14

This document defines an Extensible Markup Language (XML)-based
conference information data model for centralized conferencing
(XCON). A conference information data model is designed to convey
information about the conference and about participation in the
conference. The conference information data model defined in this
document constitutes an extension of the data format specified in the
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Event Package for Conference State.

	a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
	exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
	"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
	up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

No, it's to allow me to build a SIP UA and you to build a conferencing
server and have them interoperate.

If you think about conferencing today, the assumption is that the endpoint
is an analog phone which might have DTMF.

The assumption for this work is that you have, say, a SIP UA with a very
fancy UI.

Your conference server has to work with my UI, which is to say that my UI
has to know how to get, say, a roster, so I can display names under the
video of each participant.

Dan:

Brian answered your questions regarding where the protocols live in the
network and gave a taste of what they are expected to do (in practice,
the experience will be quite rich, similar to the web-based conference
services, but with the ability to work on arbitrary devices).

There's a bit of philosophy that I want to touch on here, though.

> [T]he drafts seem to be defining an overall conferencing
> system... which I don't understand who would ever build given that most
> vendors currently have their own (proprietary) conferencing systems and
> I don't understand why they would want to drop all that to move to a
> standardized conferencing system.
>

Consider the instant messaging landscape in 1999. ICQ had blazed a
narrow trail through a small community, and AOL Instant Messenger was
the dominant player (carrying over 430 million messages a day). Yahoo
was making good headway, and even Microsoft was throwing their hat into
the fray with MSN Messenger.[*] All four major systems used proprietary,
non-interoperable, unpublished protocols. AOL was engaged in a war with
what they considered "rogue" clients, vigorously blocking any attempts
at interoperability.

The entrenched players had little interest in a standard protocol. Only
Microsoft -- the upstart -- was promoting the concept of a standard
protocol.

In the intervening 8 years, XMPP and SIMPLE have gained significant
market and mind share, and it's not hard to imagine eventual
interoperability between every viable instant messaging system within
the next decade or so.

It's the same curve followed by just about all popular communication
technologies: proprietary versions emerge first, and prove that the
market exists. Eventually, a standardized protocol for the technology is
defined, and the market slowly migrates to the standard. (To see how
this plays out in a longer timeframe, consider the slow but complete
migration of email from isolated, proprietary islands to
fully-interconnected standards-based servers over the past 25 years).

That's what XCON is doing for conferencing. I understand that it's hard
seeing the curve from this end, and it's difficult to imagine what
impact we might have over the next 5, 10, 20 years. But it all needs to
start somewhere, and we think this is as good a start as we can come up
with right now.

/a

[*] Yes, there were important predecessors in spirit, like zephyr, talk,
and their ilk. I'm trying to stick with the UI modality represented by
currently popular instant messaging systems.

Brian,

A belated "Thank you" for your reply. This concise use case does
help explain where the work of XCON fits into the larger picture.
May I suggest that something along these lines be added to one of the
various documents about XCON, such as the ones I linked to in my
original post? (perhaps the charter page?)

That may: a) explain to other confused newcomers to the group; and b)
potentially encourage more participation from others.

Thank you,
Dan

Adam,

Thank you for your reply as well.

Yes, and as I just stated in my (belated) reply to Brian, I think it
would be useful to include a concise statement along the lines of
what Brian stated somewhere in some of pages *about* XCON to guide
other people who might be as confused as I was. (Although perhaps it
was just a failure of understanding on my part and it's crystal clear
to everyone else.)

Perhaps. As a standards-geek, I'd love to see it. However, given
the increasing rise of multi-protocol clients (ex. Pidgin/Gaim,
Adium, Trillian, Miranda, etc.) I would argue that IM
interoperability is actually becoming less important to many. I'm on
a Mac and using Adium am currently signed into 8 different IM
accounts (3 Jabber/XMPP, 2 AOL, 2 Yahoo, 1 MSN/WLM).  On a personal
level I no longer really care about interop because I've effectively
moved control of my *overall* contact list from the various services
down onto my client. Yes, there are certainly larger issues with
this in terms of overhead on my system, extra network connections,
etc. I also lose this functionality when I move to a different
device such as my Blackberry. (And yes, I am also susceptible to
Adium breaking when one of the services revs their protocol in way
that kills support for external clients.)

I'm personally rather skeptical that the major consumer IM services
will ultimately move to a standardized protocol (or even support
interop) given that it is in their interests to keep people within
those walled gardens and keep control of the directory, i.e. the
contact/buddy list. There's certainly some signs of holes in those
walls with some services letting you add contacts from others, but I
don't see it going too far. Maybe I'm just jaded.

Anyway, I do get your point...

... that this pattern typically plays out with most popular
communication technologies.

> (To see how this plays out in a longer timeframe, consider the slow

> years).

Yes, but also consider the somewhat fascinating (and disturbing)
migration going on right now of some level of messaging *back* into
"walled gardens" of closed, proprietary social networking services.
An increasing number of people, especially on the younger side, are
doing all of their electronic communication within the walls of
Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites. I wrote about
this back in May at: http://www.disruptiveconversations.com/2007/05/
facebook_myspac.html and haven't really seen any change in that seven
months later. There's still a good number of folks moving in that
direction.

I would note that Internet-based email is still certainly used, but
primarily as a "lowest common denominator" method. If I can't
contact you on Facebook, MySpace or one of the IM services, I may try
to find your email address somewhere and email you. The social
networking services provide a nice easy directory of users (as do the
IM services) and they also provide a trust network in which you can
set things so that only your "friends" can communicate with you (thus
pretty much entirely removing the issue of spam) with Internet email
providing the way by which you get friend requests.

Anyway, this is a digression from your main point, but I'd point out
that migration to a "fully-interconnected standards-based" protocol
does not necessarily mean that communication will *stay* with that
protocol.

> That's what XCON is doing for conferencing. I understand that it's

> we can come up with right now.

Understood. If, ultimately, there is a standard way for users of SIP
User Agents to be able to interact with conferencing servers on a
richer level than simply DTMF (or speech) that will indeed be a good
thing. As Brian did rightly point out, existing conference systems
will work with any phone that can send DTMF tones. It would be
logical for them to be able to work with any SIP UA at a richer level.

Thank you for the reply and the philosophical points.

Regards,
Dan
