Hi,

I have written a free YANG compiler and translator in C.
I am making 2 binaries available now (Mac & Fedora),
with online version and more platforms on the way..

XSD translation is currently supported, with HTML, SQL,
and other translation formats available soon. Several YANG modules
(including some MIBs converted by smidump) are included
in the file modules.tar.gz.

Hi,

I'm working on a program that compares 2 versions of the same YANG [sub]module,
ignoring location, clause order, etc. I want to check for illegal
differences between 2 modules, but of course, that section is still TBD.

MUST stay the same from initial version on:
    - [sub]module name
    - namespace [?]
    - prefix [?]
    - object name (where object == rpc, notif, top-level data)
    - what else?

SHOULD stay the same:
    - ??

MAY change at any time:
    - ??

I hope we can work out some change control details this week.
These are not just CLRs. A compliant manager needs to
know what API changes and non-changes should be expected from
a compliant agent, for any YANG module.

Major details:
   - what changes need to force a namespace change,
     or is that even allowed?
   - which SMI change control rules should be applied?
   - does version control creep into the import clause syntax,
and if so, what are those details?
   - YANG module schema advertisement details
   - capability-based conformance details

I suggest we use f2f time during the many non-NM meeting slots,
and try to figure out some version control and capability-based
conformance control details.

Andy

Greetings,

There will be a YANG meeting tomorrow (Monday) evening from 8 to 10 PM in room
414. Based upon responses to my question about what people would like the
meeting to cover, it will largely be a YANG tutorial, but please feel free to
bring whatever YANG-related questions you may have to the meeting as well.

Cheers,

David

Hi,

Since this time competes with dinner, we'll see that there is pizza available
at the YANG tutorial.

Cheers,

David

Hi,

We are investigating the idea of controlling DNS servers via a common
protocol. Our approach has three basic ideas:
a) To use netconf as a basis for the protocol, so simplifying the
protocol definition.
b) Recognising that nameservers have different (overlapping)
functionality and, rather than define one encompassing protocol,
define the protocol as a set of "feature groups". Name servers only
implement those feature groups that they need. (This obviously maps to
netconf capabilites.)
c) To try to avoid the need for extensive modifications to existing
nameserver implementations, so increasing the likelihood of uptake.

The approach we are taking is to convert the nameserver configuration
file to XML, using the incoming netconf message as the basis of an XML
transform on the configuration data, and converting the modified XML
back to configuration file format. By defining a common model for
nameserver configuration data and using different transforms, we can
get the same netconf message to control different nameserver
implementations.

We have used YANG for our modelling. Attached is a model for NSD and
BIND nameservers and a model for a generic nameserver management
interface. These are very early models that we are just playing with.
They are a long way from being complete or correct. But we do hope
they are a useful starting point. We have found YANG to be extremely
useful for this kind of modeling. It is easy to get up to speed with
and feels very close to the actual text based configuration formats
used by nameservers.

Thanks
John

Greetings,

After today's discussions, I thought it might be useful to see some
side-by-side comparisons of solutions to specific problems. I therefore took
(verbatim) the solutions that have been published for the DHCP model and for
the partial locking model and put them at

http://www.yang-central.org/twiki/bin/view/Main/ComparingYang

I hope this will help people compare the various solutions. I've made no
attempt to verify that they are semantically equivalent but have simply put
out what everyone has published.

Cheers,

David

Hi,

I wrote RELAX NG schema for YIN and uploaded it to yang-central (Tools
section). It is a pretty much straightforward translation of the ABNF
syntax and the rules in App. B of the draft. Actually, this grammar is
more precise than the ABNF - it specifies whether the order of
subelements is fixed or arbitrary.

I was able to validate the DHCP example in Emacs/nXML. The nXML mode
with its autocompletion may well be the easiest way for writing YANG
models. :-)

Please let me know if you find any problems. I found few myself - I will
post them in a special mail to this list.

Cheers, Lada

Hi,

here are my comments and questions on YANG syntax and its description in
the -02 draft:

- An unquoted + is allowed as a string parameter. I think this is too
fragile as + can appear in numbers and also as a concatenation operator.
I suggest to require isolated + to be quoted.

- The draft should probably clearly specify that recursive containment
is not allowed.

- Can a submodule use definitions from its parent module - automatically
or via "include"?

- Production rules for all statements except module and submodule are
labelled "<keyword>-stmt". For the sake of consistency, the rules for
module and submodule should be renamed to module-stmt and
submodule-stmt.

- Is it necessary to keep meta-stmts and submodule-meta-stmts distinct?
Their productions are identical.

- float-value requires a sign ("+/"-") in the exponent, pyang allows
floats like 6.022E23. Maybe the sign should be made optional?

- The "boolean" type in W3C and RELAX NG datatype libraries allow as
values either true/false or 1/0. Would it be a problem to allow this in
YANG, too?

- I don't really understand the keyref statement and its path
expression. An example would be helpful.

- bit-stmt - all substatements are optional but braces are required.

- presence keyword is missing in Table 30 in App. B.

- unique-arg should have "1*SP" instead of "1*sp"

- descendant-schema-nodeid should be an alternative?
  descendant-schema-nodeid
                       = node-identifier /
                         absolute-schema-nodeid

- What is the role of unknown-statement in stmtsep and stmtend?

Hi,

Thank's for the feedback!

It's not only isolated + signs, but also if the string itself includes
a + sign:

    "1 + 2" // ok
    1 + 2 // nok

The simplest way would be to always require a + within a string to be quoted:

If a string contains any whitespace characters, a semicolon (";"), a
plus sign ("+"), curly braces ("{ }"), or comment sequences ("//",
"/*", or "*/"), then it MUST be enclosed within double or single
  quotes.

But that means that:

   default +1; // nok
   default "+1"; // ok

This would mean that a + sign either in isolation or within a string
must be quoted.

I think I prefer the simple rule. Any comments?

Ok. I'll try to write some text.

No. You can never include a module (just submodules).

Fixed.

No reason. Fixed.

Yes I think so. This is supported by the standard strdtoX functions.
Any comments?

I'll pass on this and see if Juergen will comment.

Do you need more than what's in 8.8.4?

> - bit-stmt - all substatements are optional but braces are required.

Fixed.

Fixed.

> - unique-arg should have "1*SP" instead of "1*sp"

Yes, but it is actually valid ABNF (by accident!) since rule names are
case insensitive.

But I think it should be "sep" instead of "1*sp". That also
allows newlines, just like key-arg. Alternatively, both key-arg and
unique-arg should use "1*SP", and if you want newlines you can use
string concatenation.

> absolute-schema-nodeid

No, if it is absolute it is not descendant. descendant-schema-nodeid
means that it is a relative w/o leading dots, i.e. it reference
soemthing below the current point.

> - What is the role of unknown-statement in stmtsep and stmtend?

It covers extension statements. The grammar must allow e.g.:

  description "bla bla" {
    my-ext:type "cli-help";
  }

Allowing multiple representations for a given value of a type adds
quite some complexity since we then have to say what is the canonical
representation for comparisons and we have to explicit whether or when
implementation have to remember which representation was used. So I am
a big fan of one representation per value and since a a boolean type
has just two values, the boolean YANG type only has "true" and
"false".

I prefer to leave the string encoding rules the way they are.
The differentiator is whether the string contains whitespace,
curly braces, or a start of comment. A no-whitespace string
is OK in YANG, which is a pain to parse, but easier on the user.

Equivalent:
    default 1+3; // ok
    default "1+3"; // ok
    default "1+" + "3"; //ok

Legal:
    config "fa" + "lse"; //ok
    range min..max; // ok
type min..max; // ok but now an ID not 3 tokens

The '+' operator needs to be unquoted and also needs to be
isolated (in whitespace), to be a concat operator, not a plus sign.

Should there be some new text explaining some submodule details more clearly:

  - submodules must be self-contained -- if a foreign symbol is
encountered (e.g., type or grouping name) then it must be
found through the import or include mechanisms.

  - since a sub-module can never import or include its parent(s),
it cannot use any definitions from those files.

  - the one exception to this rule is the module prefix, which
may optionally be used within its submodules. (This means
a compiler parsing a sub-module must also partially parse
the top module, via the belongs-to clause, to get the module prefix).

  - all submodule definitions are conceptually at the 'top' level, even if
they are located in deeply nested submodules. The submodule structure
may be hierarchical, but the exported definitions are associated only
with the module, not the submodule. The 'export tree' is the conceptual
union of the module and all submodules.

Andy

Hi,

One topic we may want to consider further is refinements.
It seems some clauses are excluded because they would
break 'the contract' implied by the grouping (e.g., type-stmt).
Yet some things are allowed which do seem to break the contract,
(e.g., config-stmt), and some things are not allowed, which
do not seem to break the contract (e.g., add a key to a list that
doesn't have one).

What is the real nature of the grouping?

We seem to be have 2 perceptions, neither one actually correct:
   1) grouping is like C #define
   2) grouping is like an OO class

We need to clarify the grouping refinements, and where the actual
contract is embodied (i.e., in the grouping, in the uses, or both).

If a grouping implies no contract at all (ala C #define)
then many of the corner-case refinements are not problems
at all, since the uses-stmt determines the real contract.

If a grouping implies some sort of contract (ala class),
then things are more complicated to define, and many corner-cases
will need to be addressed.

Andy
